Keep the encoder or cloud playout service sending its feed to YouTube, and change the video source inside that system. Do not stop the encoder output or select YouTube’s End Stream control: those actions end the transmission rather than switch its content. The exact playlist or source controls vary by product, so use that product’s current instructions instead of assuming there is one universal button.
What keeps the YouTube stream live?
The encoder or playout service controls the outgoing video and audio feed. YouTube receives that feed at its stream URL using a stream key; the key is the encoder’s destination credential. YouTube Help defines an encoder as: “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.”
For a source switch to leave the current live session running, the encoder must continue transmitting while its active media changes. The distinction is between changing what the encoder plays and stopping the encoder’s output. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance says to stop sending content from the encoder to end the stream.
Switch the video without stopping the feed
- Check the live output first. Confirm that the encoder or playout service is connected and sending to the intended YouTube live stream. Verify the destination and active stream key in the software or service you are using; do not expose the key publicly.
- Find the source controls in the encoder or playout service. For prerecorded programming, the relevant control is typically the media source, playlist, or scheduled playout within that system. The exact label and steps depend on the product and its version. Consult its current documentation; YouTube’s setup guidance does not specify app-specific playlist controls.
- Change the source while keeping output active. Select or queue the next video using the system’s supported workflow. Leave its streaming/output control running, and do not use the encoder’s stop control or YouTube’s End Stream control.
- Check what viewers receive. Preview the stream and confirm that the new video and its audio are playing. Monitor the live output for missing audio, a frozen picture, or a disconnection. YouTube recommends previewing the stream, checking accessibility and audio/video quality, and testing encoder failover.
A change may not be seamless: transitions, brief gaps, or other behavior depend on the encoder or service. The available YouTube guidance does not define a universal seamless-switch feature or guarantee uninterrupted uptime.

Choose where the prerecorded videos play
Local software encoder
A software encoder runs on a computer you operate. YouTube lists OBS among its verified software encoders, which establishes it as an encoder option—not that every OBS installation has the same playlist feature or switching workflow. Check the current instructions for your installed version and test a source change before relying on it for continuous programming. If the computer, software, or connection stops sending the feed, the YouTube stream can be interrupted.
Cloud playout service
A cloud playout service can send prerecorded video without relying on a computer at home to remain on. YouTube lists Gyre as a cloud-based service for 24/7 live streaming of prerecorded YouTube videos. That listing is not an endorsement and does not establish current pricing or guarantee uninterrupted service. Check the chosen service’s current controls, recovery behavior, and monitoring options.

Camera-based streaming
YouTube describes the CamStreamer App as an in-camera Axis solution with continuous and scheduled streaming. That is a camera-source workflow; it is not evidence of a direct way to switch among prerecorded video files. YouTube also describes encoders as software apps or standalone hardware, but the guidance reviewed does not establish that a hardware purchase is necessary for source switching.
Protect the archive for a 24/7 stream
Keeping the live transmission running and preserving a recording of it are separate concerns. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. For a 24/7 channel, do not treat YouTube’s automatic archive as a dependable full-length backup: keep a local archive if you need a copy, and plan how it will be stored and checked. YouTube recommends a local archive backup.

Check copyright and channel-policy risks
Changing videos without ending the live session does not change the rights or policy obligations for the material being broadcast. Before adding a recording to a continuous playlist, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for its video, music, and other included material. Also review YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies: technical continuity does not establish that a channel or reused material is eligible for monetization.
Troubleshoot a failed or interrupted switch
- The live stream ended. Check whether the encoder output was stopped or YouTube’s End Stream control was used. Reconnect according to the encoder’s instructions if you need to start a new transmission; a stopped transmission is not the same as an in-session source change.
- The old video keeps playing. The source or playlist may not have changed in the active output. Check the encoder or playout service’s current source-selection workflow and confirm that the selected item is the one being sent to the stream.
- The picture changes but audio is missing. Check the selected source’s audio and the encoder’s audio output, then inspect the actual stream preview rather than relying only on the source list.
- The stream is unavailable or the encoder disconnects. Check the encoder’s connection status, destination, and stream-key configuration. Use the service’s recovery or failover instructions if available; YouTube recommends testing encoder failover rather than assuming it will work.
- The stream is live but the archive is missing or incomplete. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured automatically. Use the separate local archive plan for recordings you need to keep.
