A Proxmox VM can cost less in additional cash if you already own a low-power host with spare capacity; a cloud VPS makes compute and outbound data explicit monthly costs. To compare them fairly, use your measured whole-host power, local electricity tariff, target stream bitrate, VPS transfer allowance, and the time and recovery work each setup requires.
What you are paying for
In either setup, an encoder sends one contribution stream to YouTube. YouTube serves the stream to viewers, so do not multiply the VPS’s outbound stream traffic by your audience size. The main cost drivers are the encoder workload, continuous outbound bitrate, electricity or VPS rent, and the work of keeping the stream healthy.
- Self-hosted Proxmox VM: the VM runs on a physical machine at home or elsewhere you control. Account for the host’s electricity, hardware, storage, home network and internet connection, plus maintenance and recovery.
- Cloud VPS: the encoder runs on a rented virtual machine in a data center. Account for the plan, included transfer, possible overages and related charges, plus configuration, monitoring and recovery.
Neither hosting choice guarantees uninterrupted streaming. A home setup depends on its host, power, router and ISP path; a VPS depends on its provider, account, region and network, as well as your monitoring and restart logic.

Measure the whole host at the wall while the stream is operating; a power-supply label or component TDP is not a measurement of actual consumption. For a transparent arithmetic example, 100 W running continuously for a 30-day month uses 72 kWh (0.1 kW Ă— 24 Ă— 30). Multiply 72 by your own electricity tariff. This is a calculation example, not a typical-host benchmark.
If you need to buy hardware for the stream, separate that one-off purchase from the recurring electricity bill. If you want to include it in a monthly comparison, state the amortization period you chose. Treat an already-owned machine with spare capacity differently from a server bought specifically for this purpose.
Cloud VPS estimate
Selected VPS plan price + any applicable transfer, storage, IP or other charges + backup and monitoring costs + the value of your time. Check the provider’s traffic-counting rules, plan region and tax treatment. A low advertised VM price is not enough if the selected plan cannot cover the stream’s sustained outbound volume.

| $4/month | 1 | 512 MiB | 500 GiB | 10 GiB |
| $6/month | 1 | 1 GiB | 1,000 GiB | 25 GiB |

| $24/month | 2 | 4 GiB | 4,000 GiB | 80 GiB |
These are provider-published examples, not proof that any one size can encode your workload. DigitalOcean says per-second Droplet billing took effect January 1, 2026; billing granularity does not turn a continuously allocated month-long VM into a charge for encoding seconds alone. Its pricing page describes Basic Droplets as lower-cost instances for workloads that underuse dedicated threads and positions CPU-optimized Droplets, which have dedicated vCPUs and higher prices, for consistent CPU workloads such as media streaming. Check current prices and configuration before choosing.
Hetzner’s official price-adjustment page says its 2026 adjustment took effect June 15, 2026. One example there is a CAX11 at €5.99/month excluding IPv4 after the adjustment. That example is product- and region-scoped; dedicated servers listed on the same page are different products and may cost materially more. Check the current sales configuration, region and applicable charges rather than comparing unlike machines.
Calculate the stream’s outbound data before choosing a VPS
YouTube’s encoder guide recommends a bitrate for each output format. At a constant bitrate, a 30-day stream can send several terabytes of raw decimal data from the encoder to YouTube:
| Output setting | YouTube-recommended video bitrate | Approximate raw decimal traffic in 30 days |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60, AV1/H.265 | 12 Mbps | 3.888 TB |
| 1080p60, H.264 | 17 Mbps | 5.508 TB |
The traffic figures are calculations from the listed video bitrates (bitrate × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8). They exclude protocol overhead, possible differences in audio accounting, reconnect and retry traffic, and differences in provider billing units. Allow headroom and check the provider’s metering method; do not assume that a stated GiB allowance maps exactly to decimal TB.

The gap between these volumes and the cited entry-level transfer allowances illustrates why a cheap VPS may not be an economical match for continuous streaming. DigitalOcean’s 4,000 GiB example may be near the calculated 12 Mbps monthly volume depending on units and overhead; verify metering and leave margin. The bitrate table is not an exhaustive list of possible output settings: YouTube also lists 1080p30 at 10 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 14 Mbps for H.264, 1440p60 at 24 or 34 Mbps respectively, and 4K60 at 35 or 50 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube recommendations, not CPU-sizing estimates.
Recommendations and protocol guidance in this section come from YouTube Help’s “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions,” accessed October 3, 2026; the live page did not show a publication date in the opened text. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, testing before going live with representative audio and motion, and monitoring stream health while the stream runs.
Match compute to the media workflow
A stream’s output bitrate is a useful input for bandwidth planning, but it does not tell you how much CPU the encoder needs. The workload depends on whether you capture and encode live video, apply filters, use hardware or software encoding, transcode prerecorded footage in real time, or pass through media already encoded at the required stream settings.
For a Proxmox host, the virtualization software is only one part of the setup. The physical host, VM allocation, encoder, storage, local network, electricity and internet service all matter. Proxmox VE’s official system-requirements page specifies at least 2 GB RAM for Proxmox VE and its services, plus memory for guests; its 1 GB RAM minimum is for evaluation/testing, not production. It recommends production-quality server hardware, fast and redundant storage, and redundant gigabit network interfaces in its listed recommendations. Those recommendations do not establish the CPU resources your encoder needs, the host’s power draw or your stream’s availability.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
There is no established minimum VPS size for every stream. If the source is pre-rendered and can be passed through rather than transcoded, its compute demand can differ substantially from live capture or real-time encoding. Select a VPS based on the actual workload and test it with representative media; do not assume a VM’s allocated resources equal dedicated physical hardware or guarantee encoding performance.
Use YouTube-compatible settings and protect the stream key
YouTube’s cited guide supports RTMP/RTMPS and H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1, up to 60 fps. It specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. As YouTube Help puts it: “We recommend streaming to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.”
Use the relevant bitrate recommendation for your chosen resolution, frame rate and codec, then test the actual stream before relying on it for a continuous run. Check that sustained upload is sufficient and watch YouTube’s stream-health feedback. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Store it securely, limit access to the VM or host, and replace it in YouTube if it is exposed.
A continuous stream does not exempt its content from YouTube’s copyright or channel rules. Use footage, music and other material you have the rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current policies for live content and monetization. Repeating a prerecorded video is not, by itself, a guarantee of eligibility for monetization or protection from copyright claims.

Compare the trade-offs, not just the bills
| Decision factor | Proxmox VM you operate | Cloud VPS you operate |
|---|---|---|
| Recurring cash cost | Electricity based on measured whole-host draw; incremental internet or backup power; hardware upkeep. | VM price plus applicable transfer, storage, IP, tax or other charges. |
| Initial investment | Potentially substantial if you must buy a host, storage or networking equipment; less incremental cash if suitable capacity already exists. | Usually a recurring plan commitment rather than a home host purchase, but setup and related service costs still apply. |
| Bandwidth constraint | Your home upload capacity and ISP terms. | Included outbound transfer, billing rules and any overage charges. |
| Work to operate | Maintain host, VM, encoder, local network and recovery process. | Maintain VM, encoder, credentials, monitoring and recovery process. |
| Failure dependencies | Host, local power, router and home ISP, as well as your response plan. | Provider account, region and network, as well as your response plan. |
| Control and location | Physical control over the machine and its local network exposure. | Data-center location and provider control plane. |
Compare configurations capable of delivering the same intended stream. Include who will notice a disconnect, restart the encoder, and respond if the host or network fails. A watchdog, alerts, backup and recovery procedures may improve operations but require setup and maintenance; they are not an uptime guarantee.
When a managed cloud loop fits better
If your channel runs prerecorded videos or a playlist rather than a live camera feed, a managed cloud loop service is another option to evaluate. StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It keeps the loop running from the cloud, so your home computer and connection do not have to stay on. It is a vendor option, not an independently established cheapest or most reliable result.
StreamNeo’s per-slot plans use one flat price for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, 24/7 looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. The product is the same on every plan; only the billing length changes. The first day is free without a card, once per account; after that, available terms are a day, week, month, six months or year, with cancellation any time. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support.
Plan prices: Daily $0.99 per day · Weekly $2.99 per week · Monthly $9.99 per month · 6 months $49.99 for 6 months · Yearly $89.99 a year.
For a prerecorded YouTube loop, the workflow is upload, add the stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded quality streams up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the Monthly price is $9.99 per month. Compare the service’s fee with your electricity, VPS transfer and operator time. Learn more at StreamNeo or start the free day.
Choose with your own numbers
- Define the stream: resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, audio, and whether you are encoding live, transcoding or passing through prerecorded media.
- For a home host, measure whole-host wall power under the actual stream workload, then apply your local tariff and include any incremental hardware, internet, backup-power and maintenance costs.
- For a VPS, compare current plans in the region you need, then check compute suitability, outbound allowance, transfer counting, storage, IP and other charges.
- Estimate 30-day traffic from the sustained bitrate and compare it with the provider’s allowance, leaving room for overhead and reconnects.
- Account for setup, monitoring, security, recovery and the value of your time. If you use prerecorded loops, compare the managed-service fee against those costs and the administration you would otherwise do.
Without the host model, actual wall draw, electricity tariff, stream settings, VPS plan and region, a break-even figure would require assumptions that may not fit your case. The useful answer is the total cost and operational burden for the configuration you will actually run.
