In Streamlabs, an alert variation is a different alert that plays when an event meets a condition you set—for example, a tip reaches a particular amount or a subscription hits a milestone. Set the condition and alert design under the relevant alert type, add the Alert Box to your streaming software, then test it before going live.
What an alert variation does
Streamlabs describes alert variations as a way to play different alerts when a viewer’s action meets a preset condition. Instead of showing the same design for every event in a category, you can assign a variation to a condition such as a higher tip amount or a subscription milestone. The event category and condition determine when that variation is used.
This is different from building a separate overlay layout. Use a variation when you want an alert to change based on an event or amount; consider a separate overlay when you need a different arrangement of widgets or a distinct scene design.
Set up a variation in Streamlabs
- Open the relevant alert type. In the Streamlabs dashboard, open Alert Box and choose the event category you want to customize, such as tips or subscriptions.
- Add and name the variation. Choose Add Variation and give it a name that makes its purpose clear, such as “Large tip” or “Subscription milestone.”
- Set its condition. Choose the preset condition that should trigger this version. The condition should match the event category and the distinction you want to make.
- Customize the alert. Adjust its image or video, sound, and message. Use the preview as you edit to check how the alert appears.
- Save your settings. Save before leaving the alert settings area or switching sections, so the changes are retained.
Add the Alert Box to your streaming software
The method depends on which software you use. The dashboard configuration defines the alert; adding the widget makes it visible in your production software.

Streamlabs Desktop
- Add an Alert Box source to the scene where you want alerts to appear.
- Check its placement and size in the scene preview.
Streamlabs OBS plugin
- Add the Alert Box widget through the plugin.
- Confirm the widget is present in the intended scene and positioned correctly.
OBS Studio or other software using a browser source
- Copy the Alert Box widget URL from Streamlabs.
- In your streaming software, add a Browser Source and paste the widget URL into its URL field.
- Set the browser source dimensions and position to suit your overlay, then check the preview.
Make alerts available in each needed OBS scene
If you switch between scenes in OBS, check each scene where an alert should be visible. Streamlabs’ setup guidance calls for selecting another scene and repeating the widget-add step. A source in one scene should not be assumed to be present in every other scene.
Test before going live
- Use the Alert Box dashboard’s test function or live preview to trigger an alert.
- Check that it is visible in the streaming software preview and appears in the intended scene.
- Verify the position, text, image or video, sound, and timing. Check that the variation matches the condition you configured.
- If you use multiple scenes, test the alert in each scene that needs it.
Testing confirms the presentation in your setup; it does not establish that every event type is supported for every streaming platform. Check the alert service’s available event categories for the platform and events you use.

When StreamElements may fit better
StreamElements documents an overlay editor and a native AlertBox widget. That makes it an option to consider when you are assembling an overlay from multiple widgets. Its workflow is not the same as Streamlabs’ variation setup: choose based on whether you need a condition-triggered alert change or a separate overlay layout, how the service works with your software, and which platform events you need. The documented features alone do not establish that every event is available on every platform.
