1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNeither a Raspberry Pi 4 nor a VPS is automatically cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube stream. Compare the Pi’s measured whole-system electricity use and any hardware cost with the VPS plan’s compute price, included outbound traffic, and overage charges. The bitrate matters: a continuous 6 Mbps stream sends about 1.94 decimal TB in 30 days before protocol overhead. Pi power figures published for idle, video playback, and stress are not measurements of a Pi running your FFmpeg stream, so measure your own setup before estimating its electricity bill.
Calculate the cost for your own setup
Use the actual billing period where possible. A 730-hour month is a convenient average for a rough estimate.
Raspberry Pi 4
- Monthly electricity: measured average whole-system watts ÷ 1,000 × hours in the billing period × your electricity price per kWh.
- First-year cost if buying new: board, suitable power supply, boot media, and other necessary setup costs, plus first-year electricity and any incremental connectivity costs. If you want a monthly equivalent for the purchase, state the amortization period you assume.
- If you already own the Pi: keep its past purchase price separate from the decision about future running costs. Include the electricity and any additional costs you will actually incur.
Raspberry Pi’s published Pi 4 figures are approximately 0.6 A average at idle, 0.78 A during H.264 video playback, and 1.2 A under stress. At a nominal 5 V, those currents convert to roughly 3.0 W, 3.9 W, and 6.0 W. They are illustrative conversions from approximate currents, not measurements of FFmpeg encoding or a 24/7 YouTube stream. The documented setup had an HDMI monitor, keyboard, and mouse attached, plus Ethernet on the Pi 4; additional USB devices can raise consumption. A headless system’s wall draw will differ. Measure the board, power-supply losses, storage, and connected peripherals together. Raspberry Pi power documentation describes the measurements and qualifications.
The official Pi 4 setup recommendation is a 5 V, 3 A, 15 W USB-C power supply. That is the supply’s recommended capacity, not a claim that the Pi continuously consumes 15 W. Raspberry Pi’s power-supply guidance sets out the recommendation.

Count the plan’s recurring compute price and any charges for outbound transfer, plan upgrades, storage, IPv4, tax, or other items that apply. Check how the provider defines billable outbound traffic and what happens when you exceed the allowance; a low headline price is not the complete cost if the stream needs more transfer than the plan includes.
Estimate monthly bandwidth from bitrate
For a constant bitrate, estimate video traffic with: bitrate in bits per second × seconds in the billing period ÷ 8. Add audio bitrate and allow for protocol overhead when estimating what a provider may count.

| Continuous video bitrate | Approximate data sent in 30 days | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Mbps | 1.62 decimal TB | Arithmetic estimate before protocol overhead |
| 6 Mbps | 1.94 decimal TB | Arithmetic estimate before protocol overhead |
| 17 Mbps | 5.51 decimal TB | Arithmetic estimate before protocol overhead |
For example, 6,000,000 bits per second × 86,400 seconds per day × 30 days ÷ 8 equals 1,944,000,000,000 bytes, or about 1.94 decimal TB. This is calculated from the assumed bitrate, not a separately published traffic measurement. A longer or shorter billing period changes the result.
YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates include 3 Mbps for 480p at 30 fps, 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 6 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps, and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are video bitrate recommendations; include audio and overhead in a transfer estimate. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Its functions range from practical to nostalgic since it can power an ad-blocking server as easily as it can power an outmoded gaming setup. Other uses include but are not limited to printing from non-wireless printers, playing media, making time-lapse videos, and building multiplayer network game servers and motion-capture security systems.
What the VPS plan examples show—and do not show
VPS.org’s listed plans illustrate why transfer allowance belongs in the comparison. Its page advertises a $2.50/month starter plan with 1 vCPU, 0.5 GB RAM, 10 GB SSD, and 0.5 TB bandwidth, and a $10/month plan with 1 vCPU, 2 GB RAM, 40 GB SSD, and 2 TB bandwidth. These are VPS.org’s listed plans, accessed in 2026, not market averages or endorsements. Check the provider’s live terms, server architecture, performance, and overage policy before choosing. VPS.org plan information.
At the illustrative 6 Mbps video bitrate, the starter plan’s stated 0.5 TB allowance is below the estimated stream traffic if that allowance counts the stream’s outbound data. The 2 TB plan is close to the 1.94 TB estimate before audio and overhead, leaving little margin. The figures do not establish how either plan performs for your FFmpeg workload or how its provider bills a particular stream.

Include hardware cost only when it belongs in your decision
Raspberry Pi’s product page lists 1 GB, 2 GB, 4 GB, and 8 GB Pi 4 models and says “From $35.” That starting price is not a quote for every memory variant, region, reseller, power supply, or complete setup. Raspberry Pi 4 product information.
For dated price context, Eben Upton wrote on 1 October 2026 that Raspberry Pi was increasing the price of 2 GB variants by $12.50, to $67.50 for Raspberry Pi 4 and $77.50 for Raspberry Pi 5; he said prices for 1 GB variants remained unchanged in that announcement. Check local availability and current pricing rather than treating those announcement figures as a universal quote. Raspberry Pi news.

Set up and validate the stream before relying on it
YouTube’s published encoder guidance applies to ingest settings; it does not certify that a particular Pi 4 can encode a chosen format continuously. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest with H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 in its listed settings, recommends constant bitrate, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Choose settings for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send, and verify that the selected codec and bitrate fit YouTube’s current guidance. YouTube transcodes live ingest into formats for viewers. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for its codec and bitrate ranges.
- Choose the output first. Decide on resolution, frame rate, codec, and video bitrate, then account for audio and overhead when estimating bandwidth. Avoid assuming the Pi can encode a particular resolution or frame rate without testing that configuration on your own hardware.
- Configure ingest. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and use the stream URL and stream key shown in the live control room in your FFmpeg output configuration. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it, and reset it if exposed. Use the protocol and encoder settings YouTube currently lists for your stream.
- Run a representative test. Test the actual video movement and audio you plan to stream, using the intended FFmpeg configuration and connection. YouTube Help says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check stream health and continuity. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health feedback and your encoder while the test runs. Confirm that the outgoing bitrate, audio, and picture are stable before leaving the setup unattended. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health; it does not promise that a given Pi/VPS configuration will remain uninterrupted.
- Check rights and channel eligibility. Use content you have the right to stream, including music, footage, and any other embedded material. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming, copyright, and channel rules in YouTube Studio and Help before scheduling a continuous broadcast. A successful technical test does not establish permission to use content or guarantee monetization.
Troubleshoot common cost and stream problems
- The electricity estimate seems implausible: confirm the meter is measuring the full setup at the wall, not just the board’s nominal supply capacity. Measure during the real FFmpeg workload, including storage and peripherals, then apply your local per-kWh rate.
- The VPS seems cheap but the stream stops or incurs charges: compare the selected bitrate’s monthly transfer estimate with the provider’s outbound allowance and overage policy. Include audio and overhead, and verify how egress is counted.
- The stream has unstable video or audio: compare the configured codec, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current encoder guidance, then retest representative content and monitor stream health. The guidance is not a performance guarantee for your hardware.
- The Pi or VPS cannot keep up with the selected encoding configuration: reduce the workload or choose a different encoding arrangement, then test again. The published Pi power figures do not establish FFmpeg encoding capacity or stream-specific power draw.
- The live stream is interrupted: check encoder logs, host power/network or VPS status, YouTube stream health, and whether the stream key and ingest configuration remain correct. No comparative recovery or uptime rate is established for these setups.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It supports uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free day.
