Configure the service to start after networking is available and restart if the process fails, then verify the VPS, FFmpeg process, and YouTube Live Control Room separately. This can bring the encoder process back after a reboot; it does not guarantee that YouTube will continue the same live event without interruption.
Why an SSH-launched FFmpeg process stops
Starting FFmpeg in an interactive SSH shell does not configure it to start again after a VPS reboot. The process may also stop when its session ends. OVHcloud’s systemd service guide describes this problem for a different server process and demonstrates the general remedy: place the process under a service manager, enable it at boot, and configure restart behavior.
There are two distinct goals: restarting the encoder process and keeping a YouTube live event available to viewers. A systemd service can address the first. It cannot, by itself, prove that the VPS boots successfully, reconnects to YouTube, or resumes the original event. YouTube recommends checking the incoming preview and stream health in Live Control Room after starting an encoder.
Configure systemd to supervise your FFmpeg command
Create a service unit for your own FFmpeg command. OVHcloud’s example is a pattern, not an FFmpeg recipe: its command is for Plakar. Unit syntax and FFmpeg options can vary by Linux distribution and installed FFmpeg build, so verify them for your server rather than copying an unrelated command.

Include the settings the service needs
- Executable and arguments: specify the actual FFmpeg executable and the full arguments needed for your input and YouTube output.
- Network ordering: arrange for the service to start after the network is available. OVHcloud’s example uses
After=network.target; confirm the appropriate ordering for your distribution and network setup. - Service user: run the service as a suitable non-root user where practical, and ensure that account can read the source files and access any required resources.
- Working directory: set one if the command relies on relative file paths.
- Restart policy: configure a policy such as the
Restart=on-failurebehavior shown in OVHcloud’s example. This covers process failure; it is not high availability. - Boot enablement: use the unit’s install target and enable the service so systemd starts it at boot. Follow the commands and file locations documented for your distribution.
Do not assume a restart policy will make FFmpeg reconnect to YouTube automatically in every situation. The available evidence does not establish specific reconnect flags, option ordering, or behavior across FFmpeg builds. Check the documentation for the FFmpeg version you installed before relying on such options.
Keep the YouTube ingest settings correct and private
In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the server URL and stream key into the encoder’s configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe entering these values, and its live streaming settings guidance covers stream settings and key controls.

- Keep the stream key out of public examples, shared logs, and files readable by unrelated users. Restrict access to the service configuration that contains it.
- If you reset the key in Live Control Room, update the value used by FFmpeg before expecting the encoder to connect.
- When reusing stream settings, confirm that the selected event is still the one you intend to feed. A valid key alone does not establish that a particular event remains live.
Check YouTube’s encoder settings and bandwidth
Use YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the resolution, frame rate, and stream type you actually use. The guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, supported video codecs in relevant configurations—including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1—constant bitrate (CBR), and frame rates up to 60 fps. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery.
Do not treat one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Match the bitrate to the selected resolution and frame rate, then compare the combined streaming bitrate with the VPS’s available outbound upload capacity. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. Its encoder guidance and stream health guidance are the references for the settings and monitoring recommendations.

Before an event, test with representative audio and movement, inspect the encoder preview and stream health, and monitor the stream while it is running. YouTube recommends preparing at least two hours before a live stream and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the event; these are operational recommendations, not guarantees of recovery after a reboot.
Reboot and verify each layer
- Plan a test reboot. Choose a time when a stream interruption is acceptable. A reboot test verifies startup behavior, not seamless viewer continuity.
- Check the VPS in OVHcloud. Confirm that the instance returns to an enabled and running state and that you can reconnect. OVHcloud’s VPS troubleshooting guidance documents instance status, reboot controls, and console access. If ordinary access fails, use the console to distinguish a host boot issue from an encoder issue.
- Inspect the service on the guest. Check systemd’s service status and logs. Confirm that FFmpeg is running and not repeatedly restarting; if it is not, investigate the executable path, permissions, working directory, input source, and required environment.
- Confirm YouTube is receiving the feed. Open the relevant event in Live Control Room and check for an incoming preview and healthy stream status. YouTube recommends previewing the stream and monitoring its quality.
- Check the viewer-facing page. Confirm the stream is accessible from the watch page and that playback behaves as intended. An encoder process running on the VPS does not alone confirm that viewers can watch it.
Troubleshoot by identifying what failed
The VPS is unavailable after reboot
Check the instance state and use OVHcloud’s console and recovery controls to investigate a VM boot or access problem. A healthy FFmpeg unit cannot help until the guest is running and reachable.

The service is inactive or keeps restarting
Inspect systemd’s status and logs. Check that the configured executable exists, the service user can access the input and configuration, the working directory is correct, and the command has the environment it requires. These are service-level checks; they do not establish a particular FFmpeg error cause.
FFmpeg runs, but YouTube receives no feed
Verify the ingest URL and stream key in Live Control Room, including whether the key was reset. Check outbound connectivity and encoder health. YouTube’s live streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the key, using a current encoder, reviewing CPU load and errors, and testing outbound connectivity.

The feed returns, but stream quality is poor
Compare the configured bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations for your resolution and frame rate, and check whether the VPS has enough outbound capacity with the recommended 20% headroom. Review Live Control Room’s stream health rather than treating a running FFmpeg process as proof of good delivery.
The original YouTube event has ended
Do not assume a restarted FFmpeg process reopens an ended event. Check Live Control Room to see whether the event is still accepting an encoder feed or whether you need to start a new or scheduled stream. The documented setup and key controls do not guarantee event continuity.
What systemd does—and what encoder failover adds
| Approach | What it addresses | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Boot-enabled systemd service with a restart policy | Starts the FFmpeg process after guest boot and can restart it after process failure, following the general pattern in OVHcloud’s systemd example. | It does not establish that the VM boots, the network reaches YouTube, the credentials are valid, or the same YouTube event remains live. |
| Primary and backup encoder | Adds an encoder failover path. YouTube recommends testing it by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet, then checking that playback rolls to the backup. | It does not replace making the VPS process persistent. Capacity and YouTube stream configuration must be planned, and actual playback rollover should be tested. |
Systemd is process supervision, not high availability. A backup encoder is a separate resilience design, and neither approach should be treated as proven until you test what viewers see during a failure.
