You can send a prerecorded program to a scheduled YouTube live event by creating the event in YouTube Studio, connecting an encoder or streaming service with that event’s stream URL and key, then starting the encoder and clicking Go live when YouTube shows its preview. Scheduling creates a shareable upcoming page and lets viewers set reminders. It does not establish that one event can run indefinitely: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but that is not a promise of unlimited single-event runtime.
What “continuous” means for a scheduled event
A scheduled event is a particular YouTube live stream with a planned start time and an upcoming watch page. It is useful when you want to promote a program in advance, but do not assume that one scheduled event can run without limit. YouTube’s guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; it does not establish unlimited duration or uninterrupted operation for a single event. If you need playback to continue beyond an event’s supported operation, plan how you will end and restart streams, and verify current YouTube limits before relying on a long broadcast.
The workflow below covers sending a prerecorded file or sequence as the event’s outgoing video and audio. You still need an encoder or streaming service to play that media; scheduling the event alone does not play a recording.
Create and launch the scheduled live event
-
Schedule the event
In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Manage → Schedule stream. Create a new event or reuse settings. Set its title, description, visibility, and scheduled time, then save. The scheduled watch page can be shared with viewers, who may opt into reminders. Exact options can vary as YouTube updates Studio.

-
Copy the event’s connection details
In Live Control Room, locate the event’s stream URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder or streaming service you will use for playback. Treat the key as a credential: YouTube Help says, “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Do not post it or include it in screenshots; reset it if it is exposed.
-
Load the prerecorded program
Choose the video file or playlist in your encoder or service and configure it to send that media as the event’s video and audio feed. Check that the selected sequence, audio track, aspect ratio, and playback order are intentional. YouTube’s encoder workflow receives an incoming feed; a separate playback source must supply the prerecorded content.
-
Prepare early and test
YouTube Help recommends setting up the encoder at least two hours before the event and starting it at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Confirm that the event preview appears, the picture and sound are correct, and the watch page is accessible on desktop and mobile. If you archive locally, check that the archive file is growing. Monitor stream health through the event rather than assuming that a successful preview guarantees a stable broadcast.

Start the event
Once YouTube receives the encoder feed and the preview is ready, click Go live in Live Control Room. Starting the encoder is not, by itself, the complete launch flow for a scheduled event. To finish, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder. YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Choose settings that fit the program and connection
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance as the authority for the exact bitrate ranges for your resolution, frame rate, and codec. The best setting is one your upload connection can sustain consistently, not simply the highest available number. Test with representative motion and sound from the actual program; a static title card can conceal problems that appear during busy footage or music.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS. Use it when your encoder supports it.
- Video: YouTube’s current guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 options. Choose a codec supported by the encoder and appropriate to your connection and target quality.
- Bitrate: Use constant bitrate (CBR) and select a value from YouTube’s table for the chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate. Leave capacity for network variation rather than running at the maximum your connection can briefly reach.
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval where possible; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3. Check levels and listen to the preview for clipping, silence, or a mismatched soundtrack.
YouTube transcodes the incoming feed for viewers. Your encoder’s outgoing settings and viewers’ playback quality therefore are not necessarily identical.

Decide whether to use latency, DVR, and a trailer
Latency
Lower latency can increase playback buffering. For a prerecorded documentary or continuous playlist without real-time audience interaction, low latency may matter less than consistent playback. Choose a setting based on whether interaction is important and test it with the intended connection.
DVR
With DVR enabled, viewers can pause and rewind the live stream, then resume from where they paused. Decide whether that viewing behavior suits the program and check the event’s settings in Live Control Room.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Trailer
A scheduled stream can show a trailer on its watch page before it begins. YouTube’s stated requirements are more than 1,000 subscribers and no Community Guideline strikes; the trailer must be 15 seconds to 3 minutes long. Check the current Studio interface and eligibility before building a promotion around this feature.

Choose a playback route
Local encoder or equipment
A computer-based encoder or equipment you already own can provide local control over playback and production. YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started; professional-grade hardware encoders are an option for higher-production events, not a default requirement for replaying a prepared video. A local setup depends on the playback device, encoder, and internet connection remaining available for the broadcast.
Cloud playback service
If you do not want a local machine to supply the feed, a cloud service may be more suitable. YouTube’s official encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming. The directory listing is not an independent performance review and does not establish Gyre’s current prices, plan limits, or runtime terms; check the provider’s current information before choosing it.

Copyright, permissions, and channel policies
Before sending a recording live, make sure you have the rights and permissions needed for every element in it, including music, footage, photographs, and any third-party material. A live presentation does not make copyrighted material permissible. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies, and use the free copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight aid.
Also consider whether a channel built around repeated prerecorded programming provides original value for its intended audience and complies with YouTube’s monetization and reused-content rules. Permission to use a clip and eligibility for monetization are separate questions; neither a scheduled event nor an encoder resolves them. Check YouTube’s current policy wording for your channel and content rather than assuming continuous playback qualifies.
Troubleshoot before and during the event
- No incoming preview: Check that the event is the one selected in the encoder and that its stream URL and key were copied correctly. Confirm the encoder is sending, then allow time for the feed to appear.
- Preview appears but the event is not live: For a scheduled event, click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview is ready.
- Video stutters or disconnects: Reduce the outgoing bitrate or resolution to a level the upload connection can sustain, verify the connection, and review YouTube’s encoder recommendations for the chosen codec and frame rate.
- Audio is silent, distorted, or out of sync: Confirm the intended audio source and format, inspect levels in the encoder, and test a representative segment before the scheduled start.
- The stream key may be exposed: Reset the key in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement before going live.
- Playback stops earlier than expected: Do not treat automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours as proof of unlimited event runtime. Check current YouTube guidance, end the event cleanly, and schedule or start a subsequent event if needed.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps is charged at one price per slot; and the service automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, then start your free day.
