You can run OBS on an OVHcloud VPS and send its output to YouTube Live, but only if the specific VPS image and plan can support OBS’s Linux display environment, the encoding workload, and a stable outbound stream. Check those requirements before buying or configuring a server: the available OVHcloud plan details do not establish that every VPS tier is suitable for continuous OBS streaming.
Check the VPS before installing OBS
OBS has Linux installation instructions and lists OpenGL 3.3 compatibility plus X Window System or Wayland among its Linux requirements. Those software requirements do not establish that an OVHcloud VPS image supplies a usable graphics and display environment. Nor do they tell you whether a particular plan can encode your chosen scene continuously or sustain its outbound bitrate.
- Confirm the selected operating-system image can run the required Linux display stack and OBS.
- Check the plan’s available CPU, memory, graphics/display support, and sustained network capacity against your scene, codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Review OVHcloud’s current service terms for your intended continuous streaming use.
These are provider- and plan-specific checks. Do not assume a VPS works for OBS simply because it runs Linux; verify the current OVHcloud specifications and terms before committing.
Install OBS for the VPS’s Linux distribution
Use OBS’s current installation instructions for the exact distribution and version on your VPS. Its published Linux installation article includes Ubuntu package guidance and recommends Flathub for non-Ubuntu distributions, but that article is dated 2021; check current distribution and package instructions rather than relying on old commands as universal setup steps.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
After installation, make sure you can open OBS in the VPS’s supported display environment. A successful package installation alone does not confirm that the server can render and encode your intended stream reliably.
Build a scene and configure OBS output
- Start with the Auto-Configuration Wizard. OBS’s Quick Start recommends using the wizard as a starting point, then adding sources, checking audio levels, and reviewing output settings. Its recommendations are not a guarantee of 24/7 reliability.
- Add the sources for your program. Create a scene with the video and audio sources your broadcast needs. Check that the expected image is visible and the Audio Mixer meters respond to sound.
- Choose a supported encoder profile. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS. Set a keyframe interval of two seconds; YouTube says it should not exceed four seconds.
- Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate to match real capacity. YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists these H.264 examples:
| Output | YouTube-listed H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps minimum; 8 Mbps recommended |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps minimum; 14 Mbps recommended |
These are YouTube encoder recommendations, not a promise that a particular VPS or network path can sustain the bitrate. Select a profile your server can encode and your connection can carry steadily. YouTube provides other codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific ranges on its encoder settings guidance.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream in Live Control Room.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the stream.
- In OBS, open the stream settings, choose the appropriate YouTube service/server option, and enter the URL and key. Prefer RTMPS when available.
- Start with a private or unlisted test, then confirm the preview and stream health in YouTube Studio before making the stream public.
The stream key is a credential that lets an encoder connect to your stream. Do not put it in screenshots, public configuration files, or example commands. If it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream-key controls and update OBS with the replacement. YouTube’s encoder connection instructions describe where to obtain the stream URL and key.
Test stability and monitor the stream
OBS’s quick initial test should last a few minutes, but that is not enough evidence for a 24/7 broadcast. Test the complete path with audio and motion similar to the real program, then monitor the YouTube preview, stream health, audio, video, and OBS dropped-frame indicators.

- Sleek 7-in-1 USB-C Hub: Features an HDMI port, two USB-A 3.0 ports, and a USB-C data port, each providing 5Gbps transfer speeds. It also includes a USB-C PD input port for charging up to 100W and dual SD and TF card slots, all in a compact design.
- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)
- Double Up on Efficiency: The two USB-A 3.0 ports and a USB-C port support a fast 5Gbps data rate, significantly boosting your transfer speeds and improving productivity.
- Fast and Reliable 85W Charging: Offers high-capacity, speedy charging for laptops up to 85W, so you spend less time tethered to an outlet and more time being productive.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (7-in-1), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Dropped frames or unstable delivery: OBS notes these commonly indicate an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain. Reduce bitrate based on stable outbound performance and check the VPS/network path; do not assume OBS itself is the only cause.
- Missing or incorrect audio: Check the selected audio source and watch the Audio Mixer meters while sound is playing.
- No YouTube preview: Confirm the stream URL and key are the ones for the selected Live Control Room stream, and check YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Short test succeeds, longer run fails: Extend stability testing before relying on the setup. A brief connection does not demonstrate continuous operation.
OBS recommends testing before going live, while YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages. See the OBS network troubleshooting guidance and YouTube encoder settings guidance.
Plan for YouTube’s duration and archive limits
A single uninterrupted 24/7 event is longer than YouTube’s documented under-12-hour automatic archive case. YouTube also says DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If a complete archive or reliable rewind matters, decide how your session and restart strategy should work, and verify YouTube’s current behavior for your channel. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Or let it run in the cloud
If your aim is to keep uploaded video playing on YouTube rather than build and maintain an OBS VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud; it does not broadcast from a camera.
- Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
- One flat price per slot covers the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
