Victor Willis defended the choice and described receiving both criticism and support. Former member Jim Newman objected, saying the group he had been part of would not have performed at a Trump rally. The lineup distinction matters: contemporary reports identified Willis as the performing group’s only original member.
What did the Village People announce about performing at Trump’s inauguration?
On January 13, 2025, the group announced that it had accepted an invitation from then-President-elect Donald Trump’s campaign to participate in inaugural activities, including at least one event with Trump. In a statement reproduced by the Associated Press, the band acknowledged that the choice would upset some fans and explained its reasoning:
“We know this won’t make some of you happy to hear however we believe that music is to be performed without regard to politics.”
“Our song Y.M.C.A. is a global anthem that hopefully helps bring the country together after a tumultuous and divided campaign where our preferred candidate lost.”

Why did Victor Willis say the group accepted?
In a January 20 interview with NPR, founding member and lead singer Victor Willis described the decision as an effort to promote unity after the election. He also said he was a Democrat:

Willis’s explanation was his own account of the group’s aim, not a statement that all former or present members agreed. NPR interview with Victor Willis

What did Willis say about the backlash?
Willis told NPR that thousands of people had criticized the decision in comments on his Facebook page, while other people thanked the group. The figure reflects Willis’s description of the response he saw, rather than an independently measured count of reactions. His remarks indicate that the announcement drew both criticism and support; they do not establish how fans overall felt.
Why did former member Jim Newman object?
Newman, a former Village People member, sharply distinguished the group he had performed with from the current lineup. As quoted by The Guardian, he said:
Rank #4

“Our Village People would never, ever perform at Trump rally,” Newman said. “We would never give him the right to use those songs, and we would never slap the face of the strong, especially gay audience, that made us who we are today.”
That was Newman’s objection, not a statement made on behalf of every former member. Contemporary coverage described Willis as the only original member in the performing lineup: both The Guardian and ABC News reported that distinction, with ABC describing the group as having six members. What is the significance of “Y.M.C.A.” in this dispute?
“Y.M.C.A.” was written by Victor Willis and Jacques Morali and released on Village People’s 1978 album Cruisin’, according to ABC News. The disagreement was not simply over a song’s appearance at a political event: Willis presented the performance as an attempt at unity, while Newman argued that the group he had represented would not have performed at a Trump rally or granted Trump the right to use its songs.
