Short answer: A 10 Mbps upload connection is not enough for a dependable YouTube Live 4K/60 stream. YouTube lists 10 Mbps as the minimum for AV1 or H.265 at 4K/60, but that leaves no capacity for audio, other network use, or speed fluctuations. Its guidance recommends leaving 20% bandwidth headroom. On a measured, stable 10 Mbps connection, 720p/60 at 6 Mbps using AV1 or H.265 is a more sensible starting point.
Why 10 Mbps is not a safe 4K/60 target
YouTube’s live encoder table lists a minimum video bitrate of 10 Mbps for 4K/2160p at 60 fps with AV1 or H.265, and 14 Mbps with H.264. Minimum is not the same as recommended: YouTube’s recommended settings are 35 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 50 Mbps for H.264. A stream set to the AV1/H.265 minimum would consume the full nominal 10 Mbps upload before accounting for audio, other traffic, or variations in sustained throughput.
YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom and says total streaming bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. That makes about 8 Mbps a prudent planning ceiling for the total stream on a genuinely stable 10 Mbps connection—not a guarantee that any particular stream will work. Measure sustained upload under the conditions you expect to stream in; an advertised plan speed or a single test result does not establish reliable capacity. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips.

| Resolution and frame rate | AV1/H.265 minimum | AV1/H.265 recommended | H.264 minimum | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4K/2160p at 60 fps | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
| 4K/2160p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | 30 Mbps | 11 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 1440p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 24 Mbps | 8 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 4 Mbps | 12 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 2 Mbps | 6 Mbps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
Best starting point: 720p/60
For a stable 10 Mbps measured upload, try 720p/60 at YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps with AV1 or H.265. Account for audio and any other outgoing traffic within the available headroom, and lower the bitrate if your connection fluctuates or is shared.
With H.264, YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for 720p/60. That video setting leaves little room beneath a nominal 10 Mbps upload once audio, overhead, and variation are considered. Use a lower setting or another supported codec if necessary; do not treat 8 Mbps as automatically safe just because it is below 10 Mbps.

Why 1080p/60 is not the safe default
YouTube recommends 12 Mbps for 1080p/60 using AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps using H.264, both above a 10 Mbps connection’s nominal capacity. Although the listed AV1/H.265 minimum is 4 Mbps, a minimum is not YouTube’s recommended quality setting. If you try it, check the real result and connection stability before relying on it.
Set up and test the stream
- Measure upload capacity. Run a speed test with the network in the state you expect during the broadcast. Use upload speed, not download speed, and do not assume a headline ISP plan rate is sustained throughput.
- Choose a supported codec and bitrate. YouTube supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS live streaming. Confirm your encoder can send the codec you select; device support is not universal. For a starting 720p/60 setup, YouTube recommends 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 or 8 Mbps for H.264, with the connection caveats above.
- Use CBR and set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval; do not exceed 4 seconds. YouTube supports frame rates up to 60 fps.
- Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it. RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended secure extension to RTMP. Add your YouTube stream key in the encoder’s streaming settings and keep it private.
- Run a representative test before going live. Include audio and movement similar to the actual stream. Watch YouTube’s stream health and messages during the test and event; reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it. YouTube notes that 4K live streams do not offer the low-latency option and are set to normal latency.
YouTube’s guidance is explicit: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” It also warns that connectivity disruption can break a stream. A wired Ethernet connection may help avoid Wi-Fi variability, but it cannot increase the upload capacity supplied by your internet plan.

Do not use the uploaded-video bitrate table
YouTube’s separate upload-encoding guidance recommends 53–68 Mbps for 2160p high-frame-rate SDR video uploads. Those figures apply to uploaded files, not live-stream ingestion. For a livestream, use the live encoder settings above. See YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings for the separate upload table.
