YouTube Livestream Copyright Claim on an OBS Media Source: How to Find the Video File

YouTube shows the claimed content and segment, not your OBS file path. Use the timestamp, scene collection, and Media Source Local File property to investigate.

To find which video may have triggered a Content ID claim, note the claimed content and timestamp in YouTube Studio, then check the OBS scene and Media Sources used at that point. Open each likely source’s properties and inspect its Local File path. YouTube identifies the claimed material and segment; it does not identify the local OBS file path or source name for you.

What the claim tells you—and what it does not

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If you archive a stream, Content ID claims on that archive are made after the live stream is complete. A later claim on the archived video is different from an interruption while the stream is live. YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance describes that distinction.

Claim details can identify the claimant and the content matched. A video may have different claimants for different segments, and the action can vary by territory. A Content ID claim is not automatically a takedown or copyright strike. The claim does not, however, tell you which OBS source or local file supplied the material.

Find the likely file in YouTube Studio and OBS

  1. Open the archived stream’s claim details. In YouTube Studio, go to Content, filter by Claims, and select the affected archived stream. Open the claim details and record the claimant, the identified content, any timestamp or time range, and the action applied. These details help narrow the search; an unfamiliar claimant alone does not establish that a claim is invalid. See YouTube’s Content ID claim guidance.
  2. Identify the OBS scene collection used for that broadcast. In OBS, open the collection associated with the stream and locate the scene or scenes active during the claimed segment. Scene collections contain scenes and sources. Profiles are separate and store output settings, so a profile by itself will not identify the media file. OBS explains scene collections in its Scene Collections documentation.
  3. Inspect likely Media Sources. Select a candidate source in the relevant scene and open its properties. OBS Media Sources can add media files to scenes, and their properties include Local File. Record the path shown and check the file itself to confirm its content. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
  4. Match the file to the claimed segment. Compare the file’s audio or video with the content named in the claim and the segment’s time range. Use the stream timeline and your scene-switching or playback records, if available, to establish what was actually visible or audible then.

When several OBS files could match

There may be more than one plausible source if media overlapped, a playlist was involved, the same asset appears in multiple scenes, or scene switches changed what was live. In those cases, a source’s presence in a scene does not prove it played during the claimed segment. Check which scene was active and whether the media was playing at that moment; use any playback logs or records you kept. YouTube’s claim details and OBS’s source properties alone cannot establish that history.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If the collection was moved to another computer, paths may need extra attention. OBS notes that media files do not become portable just because OBS is in portable mode. A relocated collection may need paths that work on the new device or manual changes to its JSON file. See OBS’s Portable Mode documentation.

Choose what to do after identifying the file

  • If the claim matches material you used and you lack a valid basis to use it: consider leaving the claim in place or removing or replacing the material where YouTube makes that option available. If you replace it, use material you have the necessary rights to use.
  • If you have a license, a valid copyright exception, or evidence of misidentification: you may have grounds to dispute. Credit to the owner, owning a copy of the work, or not monetizing the video does not by itself justify a dispute.
  • If you are unsure: verify the file, the segment, and your rights before challenging the claim. YouTube says it does not decide ownership disputes. An appeal can carry additional risk: after a rejected appeal, the claimant may submit a valid removal request, which can lead to a strike. Read YouTube’s dispute guidance and appeal guidance before proceeding.

Deadlines and revenue held during a dispute

YouTube gives a claimant 30 days to respond to an initial dispute and seven days to respond to an appeal. These are response periods, not guarantees of an outcome. If revenue is involved, YouTube says a dispute filed within five days holds revenue from the claim date; a later dispute holds it from the dispute date. Held revenue is allocated after resolution, and revenue data does not appear in YouTube Analytics while a claim is actively disputed or appealed. Check YouTube’s guidance on revenue during Content ID disputes for the applicable process details.
