You can schedule a YouTube Live broadcast in YouTube Studio, send its feed from OBS, and use OBS’s VLC Video source to play a playlist. Hotkeys let an operator change scenes or move through playlist items manually; the official documentation reviewed does not establish a built-in way to switch playlist blocks automatically at set times. Scheduling the broadcast and scheduling individual blocks are separate jobs.

What you can schedule—and what hotkeys control

YouTube Studio schedules the future live event and its watch page. OBS acts as the encoder: it sends video and audio to YouTube using the stream URL and stream key. Inside OBS, a VLC Video source can play multiple local media files in sequence. Hotkeys can trigger controls such as scene changes and playlist next/previous actions, but those are operator-triggered controls, not clock-based block scheduling.

YouTube says scheduling a stream can make it appear as upcoming, where viewers may set a reminder. Its help page describes this as a way to promote a stream: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Check that the channel can go live

Before announcing an event, check eligibility in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restrictions during the preceding 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16. Eligibility can change, so confirm it on the account you will use rather than assuming a previously eligible channel remains eligible. See YouTube live streaming restrictions.

Schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio

  1. Open the Live Control Room: in YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Open Manage: choose Schedule Stream and either reuse settings from an earlier broadcast or create a new one.
  3. Set the event details: choose the intended date and time and complete the broadcast’s title, description, audience and visibility settings. Check the time zone and event page before sharing the link.
  4. Save and confirm the event: make sure the scheduled broadcast appears in Live Control Room. Scheduling creates the YouTube event; it does not start OBS or play the playlist.

YouTube’s current setup guidance is at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder and Manage live stream settings. Labels may change as YouTube updates Studio.

Connect OBS to the scheduled YouTube event

  1. Get the ingest details: in the scheduled event’s Live Control Room, find the stream settings and copy the server/stream URL and stream key.
  2. Enter them in OBS: open Settings → Stream, choose the YouTube service or the appropriate custom server option, and enter the URL and key in their corresponding fields. OBS labels can vary by version and service selection.
  3. Keep the key private: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and allows YouTube to accept it. Do not publish it or include it in screenshots, recordings or shared documents. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube’s stream settings.
  4. Verify the selected event: return to Live Control Room and confirm that the incoming OBS feed is associated with the scheduled broadcast, not another event.

YouTube’s instructions for stream URL and key are in Manage live stream settings. Encoder setup guidance is in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Choose the OBS source for the playlist

Use VLC Video for a multi-item block

In the scene that will be live, add a VLC Video source, then add the local media files in the order you want them to play. VLC must be installed for this source to appear. Match the VLC and OBS architectures: use 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Configure the source’s playlist loop and shuffle options to suit the program. OBS documents loop as on by default and shuffle as off by default for VLC Video; confirm the settings in your installed version. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources guide.

Use Media Source for one file

For a single local audio or video file, add a Media Source instead. Its loop option applies to that file. It is not the same as a multi-item VLC playlist; use VLC Video when the block is a queue of several items. OBS describes the difference in Media Sources.

Set hotkeys for manual control

  1. Open the hotkey settings: in OBS, go to Settings → Hotkeys.
  2. Assign scene and stream controls: find the relevant actions, such as switching to a scene or starting/stopping streaming, and assign keys or combinations you can use reliably.
  3. Assign playlist navigation: select the VLC Video source’s next and previous playlist actions and set shortcuts if those actions are available in your OBS build. The OBS VLC source code registers next/previous playlist hotkey actions, but exact availability and labels can vary by version or package. Do not assume a universal default key.
  4. Avoid accidental triggers: use combinations unlikely to be pressed while typing or operating other software. Test each shortcut with the intended scene and source active.
  5. Rehearse privately: run an unlisted or private test broadcast, verify the correct event, and confirm that the hotkeys advance the playlist or switch scenes as intended.

OBS’s Overview Guide explains that hotkeys can be assigned to a variety of actions. Its Keyboard Shortcuts page covers shortcut configuration. The VLC next/previous controls are also visible in the OBS VLC source implementation; implementation details are not a guarantee that every installed build exposes identical defaults.

Can OBS automatically change blocks at scheduled times?

The reviewed YouTube and OBS documentation supports scheduling the broadcast in YouTube and manually controlling OBS scenes or VLC playlist navigation with hotkeys. It does not document a native OBS feature for changing individual playlist blocks at specified clock times. If unattended timed changes are essential, investigate a current OBS plugin, script or external automation separately, verify that it works with your OBS version, and rehearse the complete sequence before relying on it.

Prepare and start the live event

  1. Set up early: YouTube advises setting up the encoder at least two hours ahead and starting it at least 15 minutes before the event. These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not guarantees that a particular setup will work.
  2. Start the OBS feed: begin streaming from OBS and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room.
  3. Check the preview: confirm picture, audio, playlist order and the correct scheduled event before the public start time.
  4. Start the broadcast: use the Live Control Room controls to begin the scheduled event when ready; sending an encoder feed and starting the YouTube broadcast are distinct actions.
  5. Monitor the program: watch the preview and audio, operate hotkeys when a manual change is needed, and stop the encoder after the event.

YouTube’s timing advice appears in YouTube live streaming tips.

Common problems and fixes

  • VLC Video is missing: install VLC, then restart OBS if needed. Confirm that 64-bit OBS is paired with 64-bit VLC.
  • YouTube shows no incoming feed: check that OBS is streaming, the server URL and stream key match the scheduled event, and the selected event is the one you intend to broadcast. Keep the key private while correcting it.
  • The event is scheduled but not live: scheduling creates the event page; it does not start the encoder or necessarily start the public broadcast. Start the OBS feed, verify its preview, then use the Live Control Room to start the event.
  • A playlist does not advance or repeat as expected: verify the VLC source contains the intended files, inspect loop and shuffle settings, and test next/previous actions directly before going live.
  • A hotkey does nothing or triggers the wrong action: check the assignment in Settings → Hotkeys, ensure the intended source or scene is present, and test for conflicts with other shortcuts.
  • The wrong video plays at a block boundary: confirm the playlist order and whether shuffle is enabled. For a predictable sequence, turn shuffle off and rehearse the transition.
  • The channel cannot start a live event: check current eligibility and restrictions in Live Control Room; prior access does not establish current eligibility.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps uploaded recordings looping without leaving a home computer on, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting a camera feed; the channel stays live from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to remain on.
