You can use VLC’s stream-output pipeline to apply a video filter while sending prerecorded footage to YouTube, but official documentation does not confirm a complete, current VLC rotation-to-YouTube recipe. The key is to verify that the rotation is in the transmitted picture—not just VLC’s preview—and that YouTube receives a stable encoder feed. Here’s how to configure and check the workflow without relying on unverified commands or menu paths.
What VLC can—and cannot—guarantee
VLC stream output can process media files, transcode them, apply audio or video filters, and send the result over a network. VideoLAN describes those capabilities in its stream-output documentation and transcoding documentation. That establishes that filtering during output is possible in principle; it does not establish a tested, current set of VLC clicks or a guaranteed stream-output command for rotating a file to YouTube.
Rotation must affect the encoded signal VLC sends. Rotating a video in a local preview or changing a window’s orientation is not sufficient evidence that YouTube will receive the corrected picture. VLC versions, operating systems, and available output modules can differ, so treat the setup as something to rehearse and validate.
Prepare the video and YouTube stream
Check the source footage
- Confirm which way the footage should be turned and whether the intended output should be landscape or portrait.
- Check that the source has the expected picture and audio before streaming. If the file itself is sideways, rotating it before playback is another approach; confirm the resulting file’s orientation independently.
- Plan to inspect the output aspect ratio and framing after rotation. A rotated image may not fit the original frame dimensions without cropping, borders, or scaling.
Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream into the encoder’s corresponding settings. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in screenshots, publish it, or leave it in a shared command history.
- Use an ingest protocol and output module that your VLC build actually supports. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its encrypted form of RTMP, and documents where to find the RTMPS URL in Live Control Room. General VLC network-streaming capability does not prove that a particular VLC build can connect to YouTube’s current RTMPS endpoint or authenticate with a key. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions, encoder settings, and its RTMPS setup information.
Configure rotation in VLC’s stream output
Use VLC’s stream-output or transcoding configuration to apply a video filter to the outgoing stream. The exact filter name, placement, and interface controls are not established by the official material cited here, so do not assume that a preview transform, a particular menu, or a copied command will rotate the transmitted output in every VLC version.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- In VLC, choose the stream-output workflow for the media file rather than merely opening it for local playback. Locate the output/transcoding options available in your installed version.
- Configure the video-processing filter in the output/transcoding path, then configure the network destination and authentication details for YouTube. Keep the rotation and destination settings in the path that produces the encoded stream.
- Start with a short rehearsal. Check VLC’s output where available, then check YouTube’s ingest preview in Live Control Room. Confirm the picture is upright there, the framing is acceptable, and the audio is present.
- If the YouTube preview remains sideways, stop and adjust the output filter or preprocess the video file. Do not treat a correctly rotated local preview as proof that the transmitted signal is corrected.
VideoLAN’s transcoding guide confirms that filters can be applied in a stream-output pipeline, but does not publish the complete current rotation-to-YouTube procedure. Validate the actual output rather than relying on an unverified filter string.
Set video quality and monitor the feed
YouTube’s current encoder-settings page lists H.264 bitrate recommendations and supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 ingest options, up to 60 fps. For H.264, its listed minimum and recommended bitrates include:

| Output | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published encoder recommendations, not guaranteed results. Choose settings that match the source, codec, frame rate, and available upload capacity. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Check its encoder settings page again when configuring a stream because its recommendations can change.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview for orientation, aspect ratio, audio, and continuity.
- Check stream-health messages while the encoder is running; a visible preview alone does not establish that the connection is healthy.
- Test with motion and audio similar to the planned stream, and rehearse before a public event. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover testing and monitoring.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview and use the Live Control Room’s Go live control when that workflow calls for it.
Loop a playlist
VLC’s VideoLAN Media Library (VLM) documentation describes broadcasts with multiple inputs and an output, sequential playback, and a loop option that restarts the list after its final item. This is documented manager functionality; it does not mean every graphical playlist repeat setting automatically applies to a stream-output pipeline. See the VLM documentation and test the sequence and restart behavior in the outgoing feed before relying on it.

Troubleshoot before going public
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC’s preview is upright, but YouTube shows sideways footage | The rotation affected local display rather than stream output. | Move or apply the filter in the output/transcoding path, then verify in YouTube’s ingest preview. If needed, preprocess the file and test again. |
| VLC does not connect to YouTube | The selected output module may not support the ingest URL/protocol, or the URL/key may be incorrect. | Confirm the current stream URL and key in Live Control Room and verify that the VLC output module supports the protocol, including RTMPS if selected. |
| YouTube receives video but reports poor stream health | Encoder settings or available upload capacity may not suit the chosen resolution and frame rate. | Compare the output settings with YouTube’s published bitrate and keyframe recommendations, then rehearse while monitoring stream health. |
| The video is rotated but poorly framed | The rotated picture’s dimensions or aspect ratio do not fit the output frame. | Inspect the YouTube preview and adjust the output framing or preprocess the source; verify the complete picture rather than only its orientation. |
| A playlist stops after its final item | The stream-output playlist may not be using VLM looping behavior. | Configure and test the VLM sequence and loop option, or use another verified repeat workflow for the output path. |
| A scheduled stream is not public after the encoder starts | The scheduled-stream workflow may require a separate Go live action. | Check the Live Control Room preview and use its Go live control when prompted by the workflow. |
