Not reliably if the encoder runs only on that Azure VM. A Windows guest update can require a reboot, which stops the encoder process and interrupts its feed to YouTube. Scheduling updates can move planned patching outside a broadcast, and eligible Windows Server Azure Edition VMs can use hotpatching for supported updates that do not require a reboot. Neither approach guarantees that every update avoids a restart.
What kind of update is interrupting the stream?
First distinguish an update inside Windows from maintenance of Azure’s physical infrastructure. They have different causes and controls, but either can affect a live workload.
Windows guest updates
Guest updates are installed in the operating system inside the VM. Windows updates can require a guest restart. If the encoder is running on that VM, a restart interrupts the encoder process and its connection to YouTube. Microsoft notes that reboot and recovery time varies by circumstances, including host memory size and recovery methods. Azure host maintenance
Host maintenance updates Azure’s physical infrastructure rather than Windows inside your VM. Azure says most host maintenance is transparent, but depending on the update, a VM may briefly freeze, reboot, or live-migrate to another host. Azure chooses the least disruptive available mechanism for the particular update. Platform maintenance notifications and scheduled events can help you learn about planned events; they do not keep a guest encoder running if the guest restarts. What update scheduling can—and cannot—do
Azure Update Manager supports recurring update schedules and reboot settings. Use them to place planned guest patching in a quiet period when a brief interruption is acceptable, then verify the VM’s update and reboot configuration. Scheduling controls timing; it is not a continuous-availability guarantee. Microsoft warns that Windows Update registry settings can cause a reboot even when a schedule specifies “Never Reboot.” See the scheduled patching documentation.
Practical patch-window procedure
- Identify the interruption source. Check whether the event is a Windows guest update or Azure platform maintenance. Guest patch scheduling does not control platform-initiated maintenance.
- Choose a quiet window. Schedule recurring guest updates outside the documentary’s broadcast window, allowing time for installation, any required reboot, and recovery checks.
- Review reboot behavior. Check the Update Manager reboot setting and the Windows Update configuration, including registry policies that may override the expected schedule.
- Observe a real patch cycle. Confirm that Windows returns, the encoder starts or reconnects as intended, and YouTube receives a usable feed before relying on the schedule for future broadcasts.
Does hotpatching prevent the interruption?
Only for a narrower set of configurations and updates. Microsoft describes hotpatching as applying updates to new Windows Server Azure Edition VMs without requiring a reboot after installation. Update Manager documentation scopes it to supported Windows Server Datacenter: Azure Edition VMs and security updates that do not require a reboot. It does not mean every Windows VM is eligible or every update can be installed without restarting.

Before depending on hotpatching, verify that the VM image, configuration, and current feature support meet Microsoft’s requirements. Why YouTube stream settings do not keep the VM running
YouTube’s Live Control Room provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder. The key lets YouTube identify and accept the encoder’s feed; it does not keep Windows or the encoder process alive through a reboot. With auto-start and auto-stop enabled, YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation says the broadcast ends about a minute after video transmission stops. That describes broadcast lifecycle behavior, not a promise that a named encoder will reconnect after a Windows reboot, resume the same event, or give viewers uninterrupted playback. How to design for continuity
If a broadcast must remain available through a VM reboot, one encoder process on that same VM is not enough. Schedule planned guest updates outside the live window, and use a separately operating backup encoder or path if the interruption risk warrants it. A backup is an architecture to configure and test, not a built-in guarantee from Azure or a YouTube setting.

- Test the actual encoder’s startup and reconnect behavior after a reboot, including whether it can resume the intended YouTube live event.
- Observe what viewers see during a switch or interruption. The official YouTube lifecycle documentation does not establish seamless playback during encoder recovery.
- Rehearse the procedure before a broadcast that cannot tolerate a gap, and document who detects the interruption and starts or verifies the backup.
