But the ChatGPT Live voice mode does not watch or listen to your YouTube or Twitch broadcast automatically. For live transcription from a routed microphone or stream audio, a developer must build an integration with the OpenAI Realtime API.
What ChatGPT can—and cannot—do for a livestream
There are three different workflows, and it helps to keep them separate:
- Prepare a stream: Use ordinary text chat to brainstorm topics, make an outline, draft an opening, or prepare questions for viewers. These are uses of ChatGPT’s general chat interface, not a built-in streaming planner.
- Talk with ChatGPT: Voice lets you speak to ChatGPT and hear a response. Live is designed for natural spoken back-and-forth and can display its response as it speaks.
- Transcribe incoming live audio: A developer can route microphone, call, or stream audio into an OpenAI Realtime transcription workflow. This is an application to build—not a setting that connects a consumer ChatGPT account to a broadcast.
Live Voice does not support video or screen sharing, so it cannot inspect your gameplay, OBS scene, or stream layout. OpenAI’s July 8, 2026 release notes say eligible subscribers can continue to use supported video and screen-sharing capabilities with Advanced Voice in the iOS and Android apps; availability depends on the account and app. Check OpenAI’s current Voice help page and release notes for the options available to you.
Use ChatGPT to prepare before you go live
A text chat is often the simplest way to get practical help. Give ChatGPT the subject, audience, stream length, tone, and any names or terms that must be spelled consistently. Then work through the plan in stages:

- Generate angles: Ask for several ways to approach the topic, then choose one that suits your viewers.
- Build a timed outline: Request segments sized for your planned runtime, including an opening, main points, breaks, and a close.
- Write prompts, not a rigid script: Ask for a concise introduction, transitions, audience questions, and backup prompts for quiet moments.
- Check the material: Verify factual, current, and location-specific claims before saying them on air, and revise the wording so it sounds like you.
For example: “Plan a 45-minute documentary discussion for viewers new to the subject. Give me a short opening, four timed segments, transitions, three questions for chat, and two backup prompts. Keep the tone conversational and flag claims I should verify.” Treat the result as a draft, not a researched or guaranteed-accurate script.
Use Voice during a stream carefully
You can use Voice for hands-free spoken brainstorming or reminders when your equipment and surroundings make that practical. It is designed primarily for one-on-one conversation, not a group of people speaking over one another. Background noise, overlapping voices, pauses, microphone setup, and network conditions can affect recognition and turn-taking.

- Use headphones or move to a quieter space if Voice responds to nearby conversation or has trouble hearing you. OpenAI also suggests trying Voice Isolation on iPhone where available.
- Keep ChatGPT’s spoken response out of the broadcast audio unless you deliberately want viewers to hear it. Check your audio routing before going live.
- Review the transcript in chat history after the session. It may not match your speech exactly, especially with noise, rapid speech, or overlapping speakers; do not treat it as a verbatim or legally reliable record without checking the recording.
OpenAI describes three Voice options in its help article: Live for natural back-and-forth, Advanced as the previous real-time experience with supported mobile video or screen sharing, and Standard as turn-by-turn voice that transcribes speech before responding. Which options appear can depend on plan, workspace settings, region, app version, and parental controls. Live can show its response as text while speaking; on iOS and Android, Advanced users can use the captions control for captions of ChatGPT’s responses.
Build live captions or transcription with the Realtime API
If you need text from audio as it arrives, OpenAI’s Realtime transcription path is a developer workflow. Its guide describes a transcription session connected through WebSocket for a server-side pipeline or WebRTC for browser audio. Incoming audio can produce transcript-delta events, followed by a completed transcript when the input turn is committed. Context prompts and keyword hints can help with names and specialist vocabulary.

- Choose the audio source and route it: Your application must provide the microphone, call, or stream audio. ChatGPT does not automatically receive the program output from OBS or a streaming platform.
- Set up a transcription session: Follow the Realtime transcription guide and select WebSocket or WebRTC according to where audio is handled.
- Handle partial and completed text: Use transcript deltas for text that becomes available while audio is arriving, and handle the completed transcript when the turn is committed.
- Build the user-facing feature: Your application is responsible for displaying captions, managing audio and session state, and deciding whether any later action should occur.
- Test real conditions: Try representative microphones, accents, languages, background noise, specialist vocabulary, and long sessions. Tune for the trade-off between faster partial text and additional context that may improve word error rate; do not assume a fixed latency or accuracy.
Transcription-only captions are different from a voice agent that listens and replies. The audio guide discusses broader audio workflows, and server controls cover session handling. Choose an architecture based on whether you need text, a conversational response, translation, or generated narration.

Common problems and fixes
ChatGPT cannot see the stream
Live Voice does not support video or screen sharing. Describe the scene or issue in text, or check whether supported Advanced Voice features are available in your mobile app and account. Do not assume a ChatGPT chat has access to an OBS, YouTube, or Twitch feed.

Voice interrupts or misunderstands people
Voice is primarily intended for one-on-one conversation. Reduce nearby conversation and background noise, use headphones, and consider iPhone Voice Isolation if available. Check microphone selection and network conditions as well.
The transcript has mistakes
Voice transcripts are not guaranteed to be verbatim. Review important wording against the recording. For a custom transcription feature, test your actual accents, equipment, vocabulary, and environment, then balance partial-text speed against the value of more audio context.

Viewers hear ChatGPT unexpectedly
