You can use Windows Task Scheduler to run a script that edits a YouTube playlist through the YouTube Data API at a set time. Scheduling a livestream in YouTube Studio is a separate task: it creates or schedules the live event, but does not schedule later playlist changes.
Choose between manual edits and a scheduled script

Use the script approach only if the time or frequency makes automation worthwhile and you can maintain the authorization and error handling. For a one-off playlist change, editing it manually is simpler.
Keep the live event separate from its playlist
YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room is where you create or schedule a livestream, including an upcoming event page and reminders. Playlist edits are a separate operation. A scheduled live event does not automatically add, remove, or reorder videos in a playlist.
If viewers need an upcoming event page, schedule the stream in Live Control Room first. YouTube also lets creators reuse stream settings. For details, see Manage live stream settings and Upload schedule tips – Live.

Prepare the playlist operation
Decide exactly what should change
Write down the playlist ID and the intended action: insert a video, move an existing playlist item, or delete an item. The YouTube Data API supports listing playlist items and inserting, updating, and deleting them. A playlist item ID identifies the item in the playlist; it is not the same as the video’s ID.
Use manual ordering for position changes
If the script will set an item’s position, make sure the playlist uses manual ordering. The API can reject a position update when the playlist is ordered another way. Positions are zero-based: position 0 is first. To update or delete an item, identify it by its playlist item ID.

Set up OAuth authorization
Configure a Google API project for the YouTube Data API and authorize the YouTube account that owns the playlist or has permission to edit it. Write operations require OAuth authorization; an API key alone is not enough. Use a scope accepted by the operation, and store credentials securely. Do not put a Google password or refresh token in the script, a task argument, or a log file.

Write and verify the script
Keep the script narrowly scoped: perform only the intended playlist operation, report the result, and exit with a useful success or failure status. The API request differs by action:
- Insert: provide the playlist ID and the video resource ID for the video to add.
- Update position: first retrieve the playlist item ID; send that ID, the playlist ID, the video resource ID, and the desired zero-based position.
- Delete: provide the playlist item ID to remove.
Before scheduling anything, run the script manually and inspect the playlist in YouTube. Confirm that it changed in the intended way and that the script reports API errors rather than silently treating them as success. A harmless test change is a safer first check than an important unattended edit.

Schedule the script with Windows Task Scheduler
Task Scheduler can launch a local script on a schedule, but the exact screens and options vary with Windows version and configuration. Treat this as an orchestration pattern, then check the labels and settings on your own Windows installation.
- Create a task for the required time. In Task Scheduler, create a task with a trigger for the time and recurrence you need. Choose a task rather than relying on a manual launch; review the trigger’s time zone and repeat settings.
- Set the run account and conditions. Use a Windows account that can read the script and its required files and access the credentials it needs. Consider whether the computer will be awake and connected to the network when the trigger fires.
- Set the action to launch the script. Specify the interpreter or executable and the script path using the fields available in your Windows version. If the script relies on a working directory, configure it explicitly rather than assuming the task starts in the script’s folder.
- Test the task itself. Run it from Task Scheduler and check both the playlist and the task’s result. A script that succeeds when launched interactively can fail under a scheduled account because its permissions, environment, working directory, or access to credentials differ.
- Log each run. Record the time, intended operation, API response, and errors without writing secrets to the log. Check that the resulting playlist state matches the intended change before relying on unattended runs.
The playlist API documents insert, update, and delete behavior; Windows task setup remains dependent on the machine’s configuration. Do not assume a task is dependable until the scheduled run has been tested under the account and conditions it will actually use.

Understand API quota before automating frequently
Google for Developers’ YouTube Data API documentation, checked October 3, 2026, lists a cost of 50 quota units for each playlistItems insert, update, or delete call. The documentation lists a default allocation of 10,000 units per day for most other endpoints. Quotas can change, and a project’s actual allocation may differ; check the current quota page for your project before relying on these figures. See Google’s quota-cost documentation.
Troubleshoot failed or incorrect changes
- The API rejects a write: confirm that the request used OAuth credentials for an account allowed to edit the playlist. An API key does not authorize insert, update, or delete.
- A position update fails: check that the playlist is set to manual ordering, and confirm you sent a playlist item ID and a zero-based position.
- The wrong item changes or deletion fails: retrieve the current playlist items and verify the playlist item ID. Do not substitute the video’s ID.
- The script works manually but not on schedule: check the task’s run account, file permissions, working directory, network availability, and access to the stored credentials.
- The task runs but the playlist does not change: inspect the script’s logged API response and error details, then verify the playlist directly. Do not treat the task’s launch status alone as proof that the API operation succeeded.
- A previously authorized task stops working: verify that the OAuth credentials are still usable and that the account can still edit the playlist before depending on the next scheduled run.
- The event is scheduled but its playlist did not change: those are separate operations. Check the playlist-edit task and its API result; the live event schedule does not apply playlist mutations.
