To loop a fixed sequence of videos into a YouTube Live stream, put their paths in an FFmpeg concat list, then read that list with -stream_loop -1 before the input. This works best when every file has compatible streams, codecs, and time bases. Test the transitions and confirm the output in YouTube’s live control room before leaving it running.
What the concat playlist does
An FFmpeg concat file is a plain-text list that presents several media files as one ordered input. It follows the order of the file lines; it does not discover new files, shuffle the list, or schedule different programming by time of day. The FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation describes how the demuxer joins the listed inputs and adjusts timestamps so each follows the preceding one.
For a fixed rotation, the basic pattern is: create the list, make sure its media is compatible, and loop the concat input. A demuxer-based workflow can avoid re-encoding when the sources already match. If they do not, standardize the media or use the concat filter and re-encode.
Check the videos before building the list
Concat demuxing is not a general-purpose way to reconcile unlike files. Compare each file’s number and type of streams, codecs, and time bases. Differences in those properties can prevent clean concatenation or cause trouble at transitions. The demuxer uses each file’s duration to position the next one, so inaccurate duration metadata can also produce irregular joins.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Use the demuxer with stream copy only when the inputs have compatible streams and dependable duration information.
- If clips differ in codec, stream layout, dimensions, aspect ratio, frame rate, or other output properties, consider converting them to consistent properties first.
- If you need per-clip resizing, frame-rate changes, or other filtering, use the concat filter and re-encode rather than expecting the demuxer to normalize the inputs.
FFmpeg’s concat filter documentation is the relevant reference for the filter-based route. A 2024 FFmpeg-user discussion also describes issues with differing formats, sizes, and aspect ratios and suggests pre-transcoding a static playlist to matching properties; that is a community explanation, not a guarantee that conversion alone fixes every source.
Create the concat file
Save a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat beside the media files. The first line identifies the format, and each following line names one file in the order you want it played:

These are relative paths, which are usually the simplest choice. The demuxer’s safe-path mode is enabled by default and restricts paths to safe, portable forms. Keep that protection when possible. If a trusted playlist needs file names or paths the default rejects, -safe 0 permits arbitrary paths, but it also relaxes safeguards against unsafe paths and directives. Use it only with a playlist you control; see the concat demuxer documentation.
If a file’s reported duration is wrong and you have a reliable duration value, a duration directive can override it for positioning the next file. Do not guess: an inaccurate override can make the transition timing worse.

Loop the list and send it to YouTube Live
Use this as a command template, not a guaranteed recipe. Replace the output settings and ingest destination with values confirmed for your account and installed FFmpeg version:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat
-c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv 'rtmp://INGEST_ENDPOINT/STREAM_KEY'
- Put input options before the input they affect. Here,
-stream_loop -1appears before-i playlist.ffconcat, so FFmpeg repeats that finite input indefinitely. The-1value means no loop limit. - Choose the streams and output encoding deliberately. The example encodes video with
libx264and audio withaac. It is only a starting shape; select or map streams as needed and confirm that the output includes the audio and video you intend to send. - Use the current ingest details shown for your YouTube account. The example’s FLV/RTMP output is a common form shown in community examples, not an official current YouTube specification. Confirm the endpoint and account-specific settings in YouTube’s live control room and current YouTube Help guidance. In particular, verify codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings there rather than relying on an old forum recipe.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or log that other people can access. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings.
- Run a short test before a long broadcast. Watch the FFmpeg log for input, timestamp, or connection errors, and check the YouTube live control room to verify that it receives a usable stream and that clip changes look and sound right.
-re reads file input at approximately its native rate instead of letting FFmpeg process it as quickly as possible. Whether it is useful depends on the input and FFmpeg version, so validate the behavior in your test rather than treating it as a universal requirement.

Choose between stream copy and the concat filter
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Concat demuxer with stream copy | Inputs already have compatible streams and you do not need filtering or normalization. | Avoids an encoding step and generally uses less processing than re-encoding, but it will not reconcile mismatched streams or correct bad duration metadata. |
| Concat filter with re-encoding | Clips need normalization, resizing, frame-rate handling, or other filtering before they can form one output. | Requires an encoding step and enough processing capacity; output quality depends on the chosen encoding settings. |
There is no universal performance figure for either route: processing cost depends on the source media, output settings, and available hardware. Test representative clips and check for visible or audible discontinuities before relying on a long rotation.

- The command rejects a file or the playlist stops at a transition: compare stream counts and types, codecs, and time bases across the inputs. Standardize mismatched files or switch to the concat filter and re-encode.
- There is a pause, overlap, or timestamp jump at a join: check duration metadata for the file before the transition. Use a
durationdirective only when you know the correct duration, and retest the join. - FFmpeg refuses a path: try relative paths using portable characters. Only if the playlist is trusted and a path genuinely requires it, add
-safe 0as a concat input option before-i. - YouTube does not show a usable incoming stream: inspect the FFmpeg connection and output logs, confirm the endpoint and stream key, then compare output settings with current guidance for your YouTube account. Do not assume an audio arrangement or fixed encoding value from an old community post applies to every setup.
- The stream ends or clips do not repeat: verify that
-stream_loop -1is before the playlist’s-iand that the concat list itself is valid. Check the FFmpeg log for an input error that stopped the process.
Copyright and channel considerations
Technical success does not establish that you have the right to broadcast the listed videos. Use media you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before building a long-running channel around prerecorded material. A looping command does not grant rights or guarantee that a channel will qualify for monetization.
