Yes—Azure credit exhaustion or expiry can disable a subscription and deallocate its virtual machines, stopping a YouTube stream hosted on one. Check the subscription and credit status in the Azure portal first. If the subscription is active and the VM is running, investigate the VM, streaming software, network connection, and YouTube separately; the timing alone does not establish the cause.
Check whether Azure disabled the subscription
In the Azure portal, open Subscriptions and inspect the status of the subscription that contains the VM. Also review Azure billing notifications. Microsoft lists expired credit, a reached spending limit, an overdue bill, and a payment card limit or disablement among possible reasons for a subscription to be disabled. A disabled subscription cannot create or manage resources; its VMs are deallocated, temporary IP addresses are freed, and storage becomes read-only. See Microsoft’s Azure subscription states.
A disabled status makes an Azure-level interruption plausible, but it does not prove credit expiry was the cause. Check the portal’s stated status and billing information rather than inferring the reason from when the stream stopped.
Check the credit balance, expiry date, and spending limit
Find the credit information for your billing offer
For a subscription billed under a Microsoft Customer Agreement, Microsoft documents this portal path: Billing > Payment methods > Azure credits. Check the available balance and the expiry date shown for each credit. The displayed available balance reflects activity through the last invoice; when it reaches zero, eligible usage is charged through the billing account’s payment method. Confirm your billing agreement before relying on this exact navigation or interpreting the balance. See Track Microsoft Customer Agreement Azure credit balance.

Distinguish a spending limit from credit expiry
A spending limit and an expiring credit are related but not identical. Microsoft says that when usage exhausts a spending limit, deployed services are disabled for the rest of that billing period; its example includes VMs being stopped and deallocated. Some subscriptions with credits across multiple months are re-enabled at the start of the next billing period. Eligible free-account holders may be able to upgrade to pay-as-you-go to remove the spending limit and re-enable the subscription. Check the terms for your offer before expecting either outcome. See Azure spending limit.
Apply free-account terms only to a qualifying free account
Microsoft’s free-account offer describes $200 in billing-currency credit for the first 30 days for eligible new users. Under those offer terms, the subscription and services are disabled when the credit runs out or the period ends. Those terms are not a general rule for every Azure prepaid-credit offer; check the offer attached to your subscription. See Azure free account.

Resolve billing or cancellation issues before retrying the VM
If the subscription remains disabled after you update payment information, check for an outstanding balance. Microsoft also says virtual and prepaid credit cards are not accepted as Azure subscription payment methods. If you canceled the subscription deliberately, service disablement and VM deallocation follow; reactivation options depend on subscription type and timing. Review Microsoft’s Reactivate a disabled Azure subscription and Cancel your Azure subscription guidance.
Once the subscription is active, check the VM’s resource status and try starting it from the Azure portal. If it will not start, open the VM’s Activity log and review the relevant deployment or operation details for the recorded error. Allocation failure is one documented cause of restart or resize trouble, but use the actual error to choose the next step rather than assuming that is what happened. Microsoft’s VM restart and resize troubleshooting explains how to investigate such errors.

If the VM is running, troubleshoot the streaming path
When Azure shows an active subscription and a running VM, the Azure control plane alone does not explain why the stream stopped. Check the layers that carry the stream:
- Guest operating system: Review system logs and confirm the VM has not rebooted, shut down, or encountered resource or disk problems.
- Streaming application: Confirm the encoder or other streaming process is running, using the intended YouTube stream key, and showing a connected or live state. Check its logs for errors.
- Outbound network: Verify the VM can reach the internet and that its outbound connection has not been blocked or interrupted.
- YouTube: Check the stream’s status in YouTube Studio and look for a platform-side warning or stream health issue.
The exact cause depends on the VM operating system, streaming software, configuration, and YouTube status. Azure’s subscription and VM guidance does not identify which of those applies to a particular stream.

Each slot streams uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
