The PC must turn back on when power returns, the operating system must start the streaming session, OBS must launch with the correct setup, and YouTube must accept the encoder’s return. Configure and test each link in that chain; a UPS can help with short outages but cannot guarantee recovery after its battery runs out.
What has to happen for automatic recovery
There are two different failures to plan for. If OBS stays open but loses its connection, OBS can try to reconnect. If the computer loses power and shuts down, it needs a separate boot-and-startup plan before OBS can reconnect.
- Power: The PC either rides through the interruption on a UPS or powers on after utility power returns.
- Operating system: The system reaches the user session and makes the network and any required audio or video sources available.
- OBS: OBS launches with the intended profile, scene collection, sources, encoder settings, and YouTube stream key, then starts streaming.
- YouTube: The broadcast is configured to allow the encoder to start it, and the returned stream is healthy.
These are independent failure points. OBS’s Automatic Reconnect setting addresses a dropped encoder connection while OBS is running; it does not switch on a powered-off computer or relaunch OBS. OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Set the PC to recover when power returns
Check firmware for AC-restoration behavior
Look in your PC or motherboard documentation for a firmware setting such as “Restore AC Power Loss,” “Restore on AC Power Loss,” “AC Back,” or an equivalent. Depending on the device, choices may include powering off, powering on, or returning to the previous state. Select the behavior that suits your recovery plan, then test it with the actual PC and power arrangement.

Firmware menus and availability vary. ASUS India documents “Restore AC Power Loss” on a ROG MAXIMUS Z790 HERO, with “Power Off,” “Power On,” and “Last State” choices; those labels and options are not guaranteed on other computers. ASUS also warns that the feature may not work if power is restored immediately after an interruption. Consult your own device’s documentation and test the behavior. ASUS India: Restore AC Power Loss.
Decide what the UPS is meant to do
A UPS can keep the PC and network equipment running through a short cut, or provide time for a controlled shutdown before the battery is depleted. Runtime depends on the connected load, battery condition, and UPS. If uninterrupted streaming is the goal, connect the modem or router as well as the PC to battery-backed outlets; a powered PC without a working internet connection cannot send the stream.

Do not assume the UPS will restart the computer after a full shutdown. APC says Back-UPS units return to online operation when adequate utility power returns, but the computer may not restart automatically; a BIOS option may be needed. APC Back-UPS FAQ. There is no general UPS capacity recommendation here: choose one based on your actual combined load and desired runtime.
Configure Windows or your operating system to start OBS
After the PC boots, an operating-system startup method must launch the streaming session and OBS. Make sure the method fits your OS, account security policy, and whether an interactive user session is required by your sources. Automatic sign-in can have security implications, so assess that tradeoff for the specific device and account. OS startup steps vary; there is no single procedure that applies to every Windows or Linux machine.

Before relying on unattended startup, verify that the correct scene collection, sources, audio devices, network connection, and OBS profile are available after a fresh boot. A scheduled or automated launch should use the OBS application folder as its working directory, as OBS advises in its launch-parameter documentation.
Make OBS start streaming at launch
- Confirm OBS’s stream configuration: In OBS, check that the service or server URL and stream key are for the intended YouTube broadcast, and that the correct profile, scene collection, video, audio, and encoder settings are selected. Keep the stream key private.
- Set the automated launch: Add OBS to the operating system’s startup process or scheduled launch method. Use the official OBS launch parameter
--startstreamingto tell OBS to begin streaming when it opens. - Set the working directory: For scheduled or automated launches, set the working directory to the folder containing
obs64.exe, as advised by OBS. This is not a replacement for configuring the operating system to launch OBS after boot. - Use reconnect for connection drops: Configure OBS Automatic Reconnect for loss of encoder connectivity while OBS remains open. Treat it as a separate safeguard from reboot recovery.

Allow the YouTube encoder to start the broadcast
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the broadcast’s auto-start and auto-stop settings and confirm the stream-key setup. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server URL and stream key; its controls determine whether the encoder can start or stop the broadcast. Auto-start does not turn on the computer or launch OBS. Check the specific broadcast and key rather than assuming every scheduled or existing stream behaves the same after a long outage.
Use YouTube’s instructions for managing live stream settings and creating a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube’s documentation does not establish that every broadcast will remain available or restart identically after every outage.

Test the full recovery chain before leaving it unattended
- Run a private or unlisted test broadcast and confirm that the Live Control Room preview and stream health show the expected video and audio.
- Test a short network interruption separately from a total power loss. Confirm that OBS’s reconnect behavior works for the former.
- For the power-loss test, cut power in a controlled way, restore it, and observe whether the PC boots, the network returns, the operating system reaches the required session, OBS opens, and the encoder feed reaches YouTube.
- Check the viewer page as well as OBS. Confirm that playback recovers and that the broadcast behaves as intended after the outage.
YouTube recommends testing the stream and monitoring stream health. For a backup-encoder test, it advises stopping the primary encoder or unplugging its Ethernet cable and verifying that playback rolls over to the backup encoder. A backup encoder addresses a different failure mode; it will not make the local OBS computer boot after a power cut unless the backup has independent power and connectivity.
