YouTube Live Looks Soft at 720p on BSNL? Check These Bitrate Settings

For 720p YouTube Live, codec determines the recommended bitrate: 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265. Use CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and an unlisted test to investigate softness without assuming BSNL is the cause.

For a 720p YouTube Live stream, start with the encoder’s codec: YouTube recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 or 6 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at either 30 or 60 fps. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. Those are settings for the video sent to YouTube—not a guarantee that viewers will receive an equally sharp rendition. A 720p label alone cannot identify why the picture looks soft, and the available details do not establish that BSNL is the cause.

Set the bitrate for your codec

YouTube’s live encoder guide, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends the following video bitrates for 720p ingestion. The rate applies to the stream your encoder sends to YouTube; it does not promise a particular playback quality for each viewer.

Video codec 720p30 recommendation 720p60 recommendation Listed minimum
H.264 8 Mbps 8 Mbps 3 Mbps
AV1 or H.265 6 Mbps 6 Mbps 2 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a diagnosis of your BSNL plan or a guarantee that a connection can sustain the selected rate. Confirm which codec your encoder is actually using before choosing a row. Do not set bitrate above what the connection can maintain reliably; YouTube advises testing upload capacity and choosing stream quality the connection can sustain. YouTube’s live encoder settings guide has the current recommendations.

Check the other encoder settings

  • Rate control: Set the encoder to CBR (constant bitrate).
  • Keyframes: Set the keyframe interval to two seconds; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Resolution and frame rate: Confirm the output is actually 1280Ă—720 at the frame rate you intend to send, such as 30 or 60 fps. YouTube supports up to 60 fps, but choose 60 only if the encoder and sustained upload can carry it reliably.
  • Codec and protocol: YouTube’s guide lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 and RTMP/RTMPS among its encoder options. Ensure the encoder’s selected output matches what you think you are sending.
  • Color: For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth.

Use YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guide for the full current table and configuration guidance.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Diagnose softness with an unlisted test

  1. Verify the encoder output. Check the active profile or output panel while streaming: resolution, frame rate, codec, rate control, bitrate, and keyframe interval. A project or preview set to 720p does not prove the encoder is sending 720p at the intended bitrate.
  2. Test privately before the real broadcast. Start an unlisted stream and use footage with movement similar to the documentary or live program you plan to show. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the actual stream.
  3. Watch stream health while it runs. Check YouTube Live Control Room for warnings, including video bitrate, resolution, keyframe, or ingestion issues. The API documentation names examples such as bitrateLow, videoResolutionSuboptimal, gopSizeLong, and videoIngestionStarved. Starvation means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming and viewers may experience buffering. See YouTube Live Streaming API stream health documentation (last updated September 14, 2026; accessed October 3, 2026).
  4. Change one variable at a time. If health identifies a problem, correct the relevant setting, then repeat the test. Changing codec, bitrate, frame rate, and resolution all at once makes it harder to identify what improved the result.

If the stream looks soft but the encoder output and health indicators are clean, the 720p label alone does not reveal the cause. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish a particular BSNL upload speed, city-level performance, or ingest route that would explain this symptom.

Separate a BSNL issue from a local network issue

The connection details that matter—BSNL plan, location, connection type, measured sustained upload, router, and other household traffic—are not specified here. A speed-test peak by itself does not establish the rate delivered to YouTube’s ingest server. Compare a representative sustained upload test with the stream-health readout during the unlisted test before attributing the problem to the provider.

If you use Wi-Fi, an optional wired-versus-Wi-Fi test can help determine whether the local wireless link is one contributing factor: repeat the same unlisted test over Ethernet and compare encoder output and stream health. A Cat 6 cable may be suitable for that diagnostic, but it cannot increase plan capacity or guarantee improvement if congestion or the route to YouTube ingest is the limiting factor.

Troubleshoot the warning or symptom

What you observe What to check Next step
bitrateLow or bitrate warning Whether the encoder is sending the intended rate and whether the upload can sustain it. Check the selected codec and actual output. Choose a rate the connection can sustain, then retest.
videoResolutionSuboptimal or a non-optimal resolution warning The encoder’s actual output resolution, not only the project or preview setting. Confirm the output resolution and retest with the intended frame rate.
gopSizeLong or keyframe warning The encoder’s keyframe interval. Set a two-second interval and do not exceed four seconds.
videoIngestionStarved, buffering, or interruptions Whether YouTube is receiving enough video continuously; check other network use and compare wired with Wi-Fi if relevant. Retest at a sustainable bitrate and monitor stream health. The warning alone does not establish that BSNL is at fault.
Soft-looking video without a health warning Actual codec, bitrate, resolution, and frame rate; compare how motion-heavy footage looks in a representative test. Verify the encoder is sending the intended settings. Change one setting at a time; a 720p output label is not a complete diagnosis.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the issue is keeping an uploaded documentary or playlist live continuously rather than diagnosing an encoder on your BSNL connection, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and it does not diagnose or improve a live encoder’s BSNL upload. Start the free day with StreamNeo.
