Linux is a sensible default for a 24/7 YouTube encoder VM if your encoder and source workflow support your chosen distribution and you can administer it. Choose Windows Server instead when your tools, scripts, or operator experience depend on Windows. Neither operating system guarantees a stable stream, and the available facts do not establish a universal cost winner: compare the full bill for your region, VM, storage, networking, and support needs.
How to choose between Linux and Windows Server
The operating system decision is mainly about compatibility and who will maintain the VM—not YouTube’s ingest protocol. Azure supports both operating systems. A VM makes sense when you need control over the computing environment, but planning also means accounting for VM size, availability, storage, networking, distributions, pricing, and service disruptions. Microsoft’s Azure VM overview describes these planning considerations.

Is Linux cheaper than Windows on Azure?
Not automatically. Azure says Windows Server VMs include a Windows Server license by default for Azure use. Microsoft’s support guidance says that, except for Hybrid Benefit scenarios, Windows VM license cost is identical across Windows Server editions. That does not settle the total bill: VM size, region, disks, network transfer, the selected image, and applicable license benefits all matter. Linux may also carry distribution or support costs.

Azure bandwidth pricing depends on region and transfer tier; the pricing page says displayed prices are estimates and actual prices may vary with purchase date, agreement, and currency. Estimate transfer using your chosen stream bitrate and operating schedule, then check the current terms for your region and agreement on Azure bandwidth pricing. The page lists the first 100 GB per month as free for internet egress on the routes shown, followed by tiered rates; do not assume that allowance or a displayed rate applies to every route or agreement.
Set up YouTube Live encoding on the VM
The following are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Azure VM, region, or network route will sustain them. Choose an encoder supported by your selected OS, configure the stream, test the actual setup, and monitor stream health.

- Prepare the VM and encoder. Select an Azure image and VM configuration that can run your chosen encoder and source workflow. Install and configure that encoder for the operating system. Compatibility for a specific encoder or VM configuration must be checked with its own support documentation.
- Use YouTube’s recommended ingest protocol. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. In the encoder, choose RTMPS where available and enter the ingest address and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or place it in public scripts or logs. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Set a constant bitrate and suitable output. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). For H.264, its current guidance lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are encoder recommendations, not evidence that a particular Azure route will sustain the bitrate. Select the resolution and frame rate that fit your source, target quality, and tested network capacity.
- Set keyframes to two seconds. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe or GOP interval accordingly.
- Test before relying on the stream. Use representative motion and audio, then check YouTube’s stream health while it is running. YouTube specifically advises testing before starting a live stream. Validate the actual configuration and route rather than inferring stability from the operating system or a bitrate setting.
Plan for a genuine 24/7 operation
A stream that must remain live continuously depends on more than the OS. Budget for the VM’s compute hours, disks, and outbound transfer; decide who will apply updates and respond to encoder or connection failures; and understand how your chosen workflow behaves when YouTube or the VM interrupts service. Azure’s VM overview includes availability, billed resources, and service disruptions among the planning topics. The available information does not establish sustained performance or uptime for a particular VM size, region, encoder, or route.
Check that the material itself is suitable for continuous live broadcast. YouTube’s encoder configuration guidance does not grant rights to music, footage, or other content: confirm you have the necessary rights and review YouTube’s applicable live-stream and channel policies before broadcasting. An OS choice cannot resolve copyright or reused-content issues.
