If your YouTube live stream drops frames on a low-cost Indian VPS, first identify which OBS counter is rising. “Dropped frames” points to delivery between the VPS and YouTube; it does not by itself prove that the CPU is overloaded. Check OBS statistics and logs alongside YouTube’s stream-health messages, then lower the setting tied to the actual problem.
Diagnose the counter before changing settings
OBS distinguishes network delivery problems from rendering and encoding problems. Look in View > Stats while streaming or testing, and note the exact counter:
- Dropped frames (Network): OBS cannot maintain a stable connection to the remote ingest server or deliver the configured bitrate over the available connection. This is not a CPU diagnosis. OBS says dropped frames are unlikely to be caused by OBS itself. See the OBS Project troubleshooting guide.
- Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the encoder is not keeping up with the selected workload. CPU contention or an unsuitable encoder configuration may be involved; check OBS logs and VPS CPU usage during the same period.
- Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS is not rendering the scene quickly enough. This points to rendering load rather than proof of an outbound-network fault.
Use the OBS Help Portal if you need help locating logs or interpreting OBS behavior. Record the counter and time of the problem before changing settings; otherwise, it is easy to mistake one kind of failure for another.
Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Check the live control room’s stream-health details while the test is running. YouTube can flag high or low bitrate, an unsupported codec, excessive keyframe frequency, or insufficient incoming video. These messages help identify an ingest or configuration issue, but they do not independently establish that a VPS is CPU-bound. The YouTube Live health-message reference describes the warnings.

If OBS reports network drops while YouTube reports low or intermittent incoming video, investigate the VPS’s outbound path and configured bitrate first. If OBS instead reports encoding lag, check the encoder workload and the VPS’s CPU availability. More than one issue can occur at once.
Lower bitrate to what the VPS can sustain
Measure stable outbound throughput from the VPS itself, ideally to the relevant YouTube ingest route. A speed test from your home connection says nothing reliable about the VPS’s route. Leave headroom for fluctuations rather than setting the stream bitrate equal to a brief peak measurement.

OBS’s 2024 guidance suggests using 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not as a guaranteed safe setting for every VPS. Its troubleshooting article recommends lowering video bitrate when the connection cannot sustain the configured value. Retest under representative conditions: similar motion and audio, and the same stream duration if possible.
YouTube’s published bitrate recommendations
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed 2026-10-03, does not show a publication or update year on the captured page. The values below are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular VPS can encode or deliver them. Minimums are as shown in that guidance.

These recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. If your measured VPS connection cannot reliably sustain the selected bitrate, lower the bitrate first. If drops continue, lowering resolution reduces image detail and lowering frame rate reduces motion smoothness; either can reduce demand. There is no single optimum setting established for all low-cost Indian VPS plans.
Check encoder settings against YouTube’s ingest guidance
In OBS, open Settings > Output and check the streaming encoder and bitrate controls, then open Settings > Video to review output resolution and frame rate. Exact available controls vary with OBS version and selected encoder. Compare your configuration with YouTube’s encoder settings guidance:

- Use constant bitrate (CBR) as YouTube specifies.
- Use a supported codec; YouTube’s guidance covers H.264, H.265, and AV1.
- Set keyframe frequency to 2 seconds. YouTube says not to exceed 4 seconds.
- Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that the VPS can both encode and deliver reliably.
Do not treat YouTube’s recommended bitrate as a requirement to push a weak VPS beyond its sustained capacity. A lower, stable profile is preferable to a nominally higher-quality profile that repeatedly fails to reach the ingest server.

- Capture the baseline: note OBS’s network-dropped, rendering-lag, and encoding-lag indicators separately, and save the relevant log. Note YouTube’s stream-health message at the same time.
- Correct obvious configuration issues: use CBR, a supported codec, and a 2-second keyframe frequency; do not exceed YouTube’s 4-second maximum.
- Reduce video bitrate: choose a value below the VPS’s measured stable outbound capacity, with headroom for variation. Do not base the setting on your home upload speed.
- Retest with representative content: use similar motion and audio to the intended stream, and watch OBS statistics and YouTube health throughout the test.
- Reduce output demand if needed: lower resolution if image detail can be traded away, or lower frame rate if smoother motion is less important than stability.
- Consider OBS dynamic bitrate only as a fallback: OBS can lower bitrate when the connection cannot keep up, but its guidance warns this does not fix the underlying cause and reduces quality.
If the problem remains
Look for evidence matching the counter rather than changing VPS specifications at random. If encoding lag persists, inspect CPU use during the stream and ask the VPS provider how the plan’s CPU allocation, quota, or throttling behaves under sustained load. If network drops persist, collect sustained outbound-throughput measurements and logs and investigate the VPS-to-ingest route. Assess any replacement plan by measured sustained CPU availability and outbound connectivity. The cited guidance does not test Indian VPS vendors, establish a universal CPU threshold, or identify a provider-specific fix.
