To create and stream as a VTuber, choose an avatar format, set it up in compatible tracking software, add its output and your other sources to streaming software such as OBS, then connect that software to YouTube or Twitch and check everything before going live. You do not need a webcam if you use supported phone tracking, and you do not need to buy every feature before testing a basic setup. The key early decisions are model compatibility, tracking input, platform eligibility, and the usage rights for your avatar and software.
1. Choose the avatar you want to stream with
Start with the kind of on-screen character you want, then choose software that supports its file format. A 2D Live2D model and a 3D VRoid model are not interchangeable: VTube Studio supports Live2D Cubism models, but not VRoid files. Its Steam listing says it works with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software. VTube Studio on Steam
Make, commission, or obtain a model
You can create an original model, commission an artist to illustrate and rig one, or use a model you already have permission to use. For a commissioned character, agree in writing on the deliverables and intended rights, including livestreaming, clips, commercial use, and any limits on edits or redistribution. Permission to use tracking software does not give you rights to the character art.
The sources reviewed do not establish standard commission prices or a universal license. Read the specific artist’s terms rather than assuming that a model may be monetized, modified, or used across platforms.

Check compatibility before spending
Confirm the model format and the tracking application’s requirements before buying a model or commissioning rigging. VTube Studio is one documented route for Live2D Cubism; the available sources do not establish a complete comparison of 3D or PNG avatar applications.
2. Pick tracking software and an input
Tracking software maps your face or other input to the avatar’s expressions and movement. VTube Studio supports webcam tracking on Windows and Mac, tracking through iOS or Android devices, and audio-based mouth tracking. Its audio lip-sync mode needs a microphone; that does not mean every VTuber setup requires one. Check the current app listing and feature terms before choosing a platform or paid option.
Webcam or phone
- Webcam: Use this if it suits your computer setup. A webcam is optional, not a universal VTuber requirement.
- Phone tracking: VTube Studio’s FAQ describes phone tracking. If your phone sends tracking data to a computer, the FAQ recommends Streaming Mode, turning off the model and camera previews, and reducing screen brightness to limit device load and heat. VTube Studio FAQ
- Audio-based mouth tracking: This can be an option if you have a microphone and prefer not to use face tracking for lip movement.
VTube Studio recommends good, non-colored lighting for tracking. If tracking is unstable, first improve the light on your face and reduce phone load if applicable; do not assume that buying a new camera is the only fix.

Start with the available free features
VTube Studio lists its Steam application as free, with optional paid DLC for removing the webcam-tracking watermark; mobile apps have free and PRO feature tiers. These details can change, so check the current store listing and terms. A basic workflow can be tested before you buy optional features or hardware.

3. Build the stream scene
Use streaming software compatible with your tracking setup. VTube Studio lists compatibility with OBS, Streamlabs, and other streaming software, but the exact capture method and menus depend on the application versions you install. Add the avatar output, your game or other documentary-related content, microphone or desktop audio as needed, and overlays you actually plan to use.
- Import and set up the model in your tracking application, following that application’s current setup prompts.
- Start tracking with the webcam, phone, or audio option you chose. Check that the avatar moves and lip-syncs as expected.
- Add the avatar to a scene in your streaming software, along with the intended content and audio sources.
- Check scene controls and privacy: make sure application menus, notifications, private windows, and any controls you do not want viewers to see are not exposed.
- Make a private or otherwise non-public test before your public stream. Check the avatar’s framing, sound levels, tracking, and scene changes from the stream output, not only from the software preview.
The exact encoder settings depend on your computer, connection, platform, and content. The reviewed sources do not establish a best bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or computer specification for every VTuber setup, so use the selected platform’s current encoder guidance and your streaming software’s settings rather than relying on a universal figure.

4. Choose a platform and check eligibility
YouTube
YouTube’s current help guidance says a channel must be verified and must not have had a livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. The minimum age to livestream is 16. Review the current requirements and live-streaming setup in YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming. All live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms.
YouTube’s Live Control Room supports creating horizontal and vertical live formats together. The vertical version is center-cropped by default, shares chat with the horizontal stream, and cannot be added after the broadcast has started. If you want both formats, configure them before going live and check how the crop frames your avatar and content.

Twitch announced revised Affiliate milestones for early June 2026: 4 streaming hours, streaming on 4 different days, at least 3 average concurrent viewers on 4 different days, and 25 or more followers. These are qualification criteria, not earnings estimates. Twitch says access to monetization tools and eligibility for payout are distinct; its announcement says Affiliate or Partner status is required to receive a payout. Do not treat an eligibility threshold as a promise of viewers, revenue, or success. Compare each platform’s current features, content policies, and monetization terms before choosing where to build your channel.

Check the current terms for each part of your setup: tracking software, model artwork and rigging, editor or SDK, music, and any other material in your broadcast. A license for one component does not grant rights to the others.
There is a specific inconsistency to resolve for VTube Studio. Its FAQ says private individuals and streamers may use the app commercially without paid PRO or DLC, including monetized YouTube or Twitch streams, while limiting that advice for larger companies and agencies. The current Steam EULA instead says personal commercial use, including superchats and monetized streams, requires at least one paid iOS/Android version or paid DLC. Because those statements conflict, review the current EULA and ask DenchiSoft before relying on either interpretation for monetization. Live2D’s help article from 2019 describes separate commercial-use guidance by business scale, including a JPY 10 million annual-revenue threshold. It is older guidance and should not be treated as overriding current Live2D agreements. Live2D Cubism terms and licensing guidance
6. Troubleshoot the first setup
