If your YouTube stream went offline after you switched OBS from RTMP to RTMPS, first check that OBS is using the RTMPS server URL supplied by YouTube Live Control Room and the current stream key. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL, so changing the protocol also means using the matching secure endpoint. The exact cause cannot be determined without the OBS error message and settings, but the checks below narrow it down.
1. Check the RTMPS URL and stream key
- Get the secure URL from YouTube. In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream settings and reveal or copy the RTMPS URL. YouTube displays the ordinary RTMP URL by default, so make sure you deliberately select the RTMPS one. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Set OBS to the correct endpoint. In OBS, go to Settings → Stream. Select an available YouTube RTMPS service/preset if appropriate, or use the custom server option and enter the full RTMPS URL copied from Live Control Room. Confirm the URL uses the
rtmpsprotocol and matches the endpoint YouTube supplied; do not guess or construct a server address. - Refresh the key if needed. In the same OBS settings, enter the current YouTube stream key. The server URL tells OBS where to send the feed; the key lets YouTube accept it. If OBS starts but YouTube does not receive or accept the stream, copy the current key from Live Control Room and replace the value in OBS. See Manage live stream settings.
- Apply the change and reconnect. Click Apply and OK, then start streaming again. Check both OBS’s connection status and the Live Control Room preview.
2. Use the error message to choose the next check
SSL or certificate error
Recheck that the URL is YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint, not the ordinary RTMP URL. YouTube suggests trying port 443 for an SSL error. Use the YouTube-provided URL and change the port only where your encoder allows it and the error calls for it; do not substitute an endpoint of your own.
Connection timeout
Confirm that the URL is correct and that your installed OBS version supports RTMPS. Then check whether your network permits the outbound connection. YouTube’s guidance covers both URL and encoder support in its RTMPS instructions.
OBS connects, but YouTube rejects or never receives the feed
Re-copy the active stream key from Live Control Room and verify the server URL and key are in the correct OBS fields. Check OBS’s local preview and audio meters too: a successful connection alone does not establish that the intended video and sound are being sent. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder, stream key and connection.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
OBS itself fails to start streaming
Update OBS to a current version and retry with the YouTube RTMPS preset or the exact endpoint from Live Control Room. If the error persists, note its exact wording; a startup error is not enough to conclude that the key, network or video settings are at fault.
3. Check bandwidth and encoder settings after the connection details
A stream dropping immediately after a protocol change points first to the endpoint, key or RTMPS support—not automatically to bitrate or keyframes. If those checks pass, verify that your outbound upload capacity can sustain the stream. YouTube recommends keeping about 20% additional bandwidth beyond the total streaming bitrate: Streaming tips.

For the encoder configuration, YouTube’s current recommendations include constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with a maximum interval of four seconds. These are useful secondary checks, but they do not replace the correct RTMPS URL and key. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. Test with a similar audio and motion workload before relying on the stream.
4. If it still goes offline
- Record the exact OBS error and whether it appears during startup or after the feed begins.
- Reconfirm the RTMPS URL and active stream key in Live Control Room against the values in OBS.
- Check OBS’s local preview and audio meters, then test the outbound connection and upload headroom.
- Consult YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and its encoder setup guide if the issue remains.
Without the specific OBS version, URL, key state and error text, there is no reliable way to identify one definitive root cause. Avoid buying replacement hardware based only on this symptom: the available facts do not establish a hardware fault.
