To loop a video on YouTube with Intel Quick Sync, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option and a supported QSV encoder such as h264_qsv, then publish to YouTube over RTMPS. That keeps the video repeating while FFmpeg and the host keep running; it does not by itself guarantee continuous service. Quick Sync also depends on your enabled Intel graphics hardware, FFmpeg build, driver and runtime.
What you need before you start
This setup is for publishing a prerecorded file as a YouTube live stream. It uses FFmpeg to read and encode the file on a computer with a compatible Intel graphics path. Quick Sync can handle hardware video encoding, but the presence of an Intel processor name alone does not prove that the exact codec, resolution or frame rate you want is supported.
- A video file whose rights allow you to stream it, including its soundtrack and any third-party footage.
- An Intel graphics processor that supports the needed Quick Sync features, with processor graphics enabled in firmware and visible to your operating system.
- An FFmpeg build with QSV support, plus compatible graphics drivers and media runtime.
- A YouTube live stream setup and its ingest URL and stream key.
- A stable upload connection with headroom for the selected video bitrate and audio.
Intel says its forward path for new Intel GPU media features is oneVPL; FFmpeg builds configured with libvpl can expose QSV codecs, but the local runtime and hardware still determine what works. Intel’s dispatcher selects an implementation appropriate to newer or legacy hardware. See Intel’s oneVPL and FFmpeg overview.
Check that Quick Sync is available
Confirm the Intel graphics path is enabled
Quick Sync relies on processor graphics. If your computer also has a non-Intel discrete GPU, disabling the integrated Intel graphics can disable Quick Sync. Check firmware settings and verify that the operating system can see the Intel graphics device before troubleshooting FFmpeg. Intel’s support note on this issue was last reviewed on 2024-09-04: Intel processor graphics and Quick Sync guidance.

Verify the FFmpeg build and runtime
Check that your installed FFmpeg lists the QSV encoder you intend to use. For a broadly compatible starting point, this guide uses H.264 with h264_qsv; that is a practical baseline, not a claim that it will work on every Intel device or FFmpeg package. If the encoder is missing, the installed build may lack QSV support. If FFmpeg lists it but initialization fails, check the enabled iGPU, driver, runtime and operating-system access to the device.
On Linux, Intel’s graphics media stack includes the media driver, libva, Media SDK and oneVPL, with FFmpeg among the integrated applications. Package and driver versions change over time, so use the setup instructions appropriate to your distribution and verify the installed components: Intel Graphics Media Stack overview.
Choose YouTube-compatible output settings
YouTube currently accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video options, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe frequency and no more than four seconds between keyframes. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to and through Google’s servers. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.

| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not measured performance for your encoder, internet connection or source. Choose a bitrate your upload can sustain reliably, allowing headroom for audio and network variation. For ordinary SDR, YouTube’s advanced settings list Rec. 709, 8-bit progressive video, two B-frames and one reference frame; for stereo audio it lists AAC at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Select only settings your actual encoder supports and that suit the material.
Set the keyframe interval in frames
The FFmpeg -g value is measured in frames, while YouTube’s guidance is expressed in seconds. At 30 fps, a two-second interval is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. Use the frame rate you actually send, and keep the interval at or below four seconds.

Allow for source and filter requirements
Map the video and audio streams you intend to publish. A file with no audio needs a different audio plan from the example below. Source pixel format, dimensions, frame rate and audio layout can affect whether an encoder accepts the input. FFmpeg’s documented QSV accelerated transcode path requires supported decoding and encoding and no filters; if you need scaling or other filters, you may need to configure a hardware device and hardware-frame flow or use a supported conversion path. Do not assume a no-copy QSV path still applies after adding filters. Consult the FFmpeg command-line documentation.
Prepare YouTube’s ingest URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the live streaming setup. Create or select the stream and locate its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s interface can change; use the current details shown for that stream.
- Use RTMPS where your FFmpeg build and setup support it. Take the ingest URL shown by YouTube rather than guessing an endpoint. The publishing address is the ingest URL plus the stream key in the format expected by the service.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, commit it to a script repository or share a command containing it. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream again.
- Check the live control room before going public. Confirm the selected stream and visibility settings, then watch YouTube’s preview and stream-health information during a test.
Run FFmpeg to loop and publish the video
This template shows the required command shape. It is illustrative, not a tested command or a guarantee that a particular system supports these options. Replace the placeholders with values suitable for your file, encoder and YouTube stream. Keep the RTMPS address and key out of public logs and shell history.
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
-c:v h264_qsv -b:v <chosen-bitrate> -g <keyframe-interval-in-frames>
-c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "<YouTube-RTMPS-ingest-URL>/<stream-key>"
-repaces file reading in real time for live playout.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It must appear before-i, because it is an input option.-map 0:v:0selects the first video stream.-map 0:a:0?selects the first audio stream if one exists; the question mark makes that mapping optional.-c:v h264_qsvrequests Intel Quick Sync H.264 encoding. Set the bitrate and GOP/keyframe interval to match the output you chose and the encoder’s supported options.-c:a aac -b:a 128kencodes audio as AAC at 128 Kbps. If your audio is multichannel or your intended output differs, set audio options accordingly rather than assuming this example fits.-f flvselects the common container for RTMP-family publishing. Use the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides for the stream.
For a constant-rate target, configure the QSV encoder for CBR using options supported by your installed FFmpeg build. Option names and availability can vary; inspect the local encoder help and FFmpeg documentation instead of assuming a flag from another build will apply. Make sure the upload connection can sustain the chosen video and audio rates.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Test the exact media path. Use a representative section with motion, titles, dark scenes and the intended audio. Confirm that FFmpeg initializes QSV and continues encoding without errors.
- Check YouTube’s preview and stream health. Verify the received resolution, frame rate, audio and bitrate are as intended. YouTube advises testing with similar audio and movement and monitoring stream health.
- Test failures deliberately. Before depending on the setup, test a process restart and a network interruption. Confirm how the encoder, publishing connection and YouTube stream behave, and document the recovery steps that work on your host.
- Set up supervision and alerting separately. Infinite input looping does not restart a crashed process, recover a rebooted host or guarantee that YouTube ingest remains connected. Use a host or service supervisor, retain logs and alerts, and arrange a recovery plan for encoder errors, network loss, reboots and damaged or unavailable source files.
FFmpeg documents reconnection options for particular network input situations, but those options should not be treated as automatic recovery for an RTMP publishing output. See FFmpeg protocol options. No quantified uptime or performance result is established for this exact end-to-end setup.

The FFmpeg build lacks QSV support. | Install or build an FFmpeg version with the relevant QSV support and runtime path, then verify that the encoder appears in the local build. |
| QSV initialization or device errors | Processor graphics may be disabled, the device may not be visible, or the driver/runtime may not match the build. | Check firmware settings, operating-system device visibility, graphics drivers and the Intel media stack. On a machine with a separate GPU, confirm the iGPU has not been disabled. |
| Encoder rejects the file or output settings | The source format, pixel format, dimensions, frame rate or selected encoder options may not be supported by that hardware path. | Inspect the local encoder options and source properties. Test an appropriate supported conversion path; adding filters may require explicit hardware-frame handling. |
| YouTube preview is black or has no audio | The intended streams may not have been mapped, the source may not contain audio, or the output encoding may not match the selected setup. | Check the input streams, mappings and FFmpeg output log. If there is no audio stream, omit audio mapping or provide an intentional audio source and matching encoder settings. |
| Stream health reports instability or dropped frames | The upload connection may not sustain the selected bitrate, or the host/network may be interrupted. | Test the connection under representative conditions, lower the resolution or bitrate if necessary, and leave upload headroom. Monitor YouTube stream health during operation. |
| The video loops but the live stream stops | -stream_loop -1 repeats the file only while the FFmpeg process and publishing path remain active. |
Inspect FFmpeg logs and host/network state, restart according to the recovery plan, and verify the publishing connection again in YouTube Studio. |
| YouTube refuses or limits the content | The video, footage or soundtrack may raise rights issues, or the stream may not satisfy YouTube’s applicable requirements. | Use content you have the rights to stream and check YouTube’s current rules for live content and monetization. Repeating a file does not itself establish permission to use it or eligibility for monetization. |
Costs and the practical trade-off
A local Quick Sync setup uses your own computer, power and internet connection, and requires you to maintain the FFmpeg configuration and recovery plan. The looping command does not remove those dependencies. A cloud service trades that hands-on control for a hosted workflow; compare the recurring cost with the time and equipment you would otherwise keep running.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will Quick Sync work if my computer has an Intel processor?
Not necessarily. The exact graphics hardware, enabled processor graphics, FFmpeg build, driver and runtime must support the encoder and output you choose.
Does an infinite FFmpeg loop guarantee a 24/7 stream?
No. It repeats the input while FFmpeg is running; process, host, network and YouTube ingest availability need separate monitoring and recovery.
