If FFmpeg is streaming a finite video file, it stops sending media when it reaches the file’s end. To repeat that file indefinitely, put -stream_loop -1 before its -i option. YouTube may then end the viewer-facing broadcast after the incoming feed stops if automatic stop is enabled—but the encoder feed and the broadcast are separate, so check both when diagnosing a drop.
Why does a YouTube livestream stop when the video ends?
A normal file has a beginning and an end. Once FFmpeg has read all of it, it reaches end of file and stops producing packets from that input. If that file is the source being sent to YouTube, the incoming video feed stops too.
YouTube distinguishes the incoming live stream—the feed sent by the encoder—from the broadcast viewers watch. If the broadcast has automatic stop enabled, YouTube says it will end the broadcast around a minute after video stops arriving. That is a likely explanation for this symptom, but the exact cause in a particular stream depends on its FFmpeg command and logs, as well as its YouTube broadcast settings. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
How do I loop an FFmpeg input file for a YouTube livestream?
Use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option to loop the selected file indefinitely. Place it before the -i that reads that file. For a file that must be played at live speed, -re reads the input at its native frame rate; it is equivalent to -readrate 1.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 [encoding and audio/video options] -f flv rtmp://your-youtube-ingest-url/your-stream-key
This is an illustrative command structure, not a tested command for every file, FFmpeg build, or YouTube ingest configuration. Keep the encoding, audio/video mapping, and output options appropriate to your media and setup. FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 as infinite looping; -stream_loop is an input option, so its position matters. FFmpeg command-line documentation
-stream_loop -1belongs before the-ifor the file you intend to repeat. If the command has multiple inputs, verify that it applies to the one that actually ends.- Use
-refor file input when it needs live-speed pacing. Do not impose a low read rate on a source that is already live: FFmpeg warns this can cause packet loss. - Replace the illustrative RTMP address and key with the ingest URL and stream key associated with your YouTube stream. Protect the key as a credential.
The current online FFmpeg command-line manual is regenerated nightly. If an option behaves differently in your installation, check ffmpeg -h full or the documentation installed with your actual FFmpeg version. FFmpeg command-line documentation

Check the FFmpeg feed and the YouTube broadcast separately
A running broadcast depends on both a working encoder feed and a broadcast that has not ended. With API-managed broadcasts, YouTube documents stopping video transmission and transitioning the broadcast to complete as the normal explicit end procedure. A broadcast configured for automatic stop can also complete after its incoming feed stops. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation
For API-controlled transitions to testing or live, YouTube requires the bound stream’s status.streamStatus to be active. A transition to live may first show liveStarting; YouTube says it usually takes 5 to 10 seconds and can take up to a minute. Check the status until it reaches live before treating that transition as stuck. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation

Troubleshooting: find where the stream stopped
- Check the loop option and input. Confirm
-stream_loop -1is before the intended file’s-i, and that this is the input that reaches its end. - Check pacing. For file playback that needs real-time pacing, confirm
-reis applied to the file input. Do not use it indiscriminately on an already-live source. - Inspect FFmpeg at the drop time. Check whether the process exited at end of file, reported an encoding error, or remained active but lost its RTMP output. Use stderr and output logs to distinguish these cases.
- Check YouTube’s stream status. For an API-managed transition to testing or live, verify that the bound stream reports
active; an inactive stream prevents those transitions. - Check the broadcast lifecycle. If FFmpeg is still healthy but the broadcast is no longer live, determine whether it was marked complete or automatic-stop behavior took effect.
- Allow for startup transition time. If the broadcast shows
liveStarting, wait for the documented transition interval and check the status again.
The command, logs, FFmpeg version, and YouTube broadcast settings determine which branch applies. Without those details, a stopped broadcast alone does not establish whether FFmpeg exited or YouTube ended the broadcast.
Loop the same file or use a continuous source?
Looping is suitable when repeating the same recording is the intended programming. A source designed to provide continuous or changing media better fits a stream whose content should change rather than restart from the beginning. Either way, the process must keep supplying media, and you still need to monitor the encoder and confirm that YouTube’s broadcast remains in the intended state.

Let the existing file repeat
- Content: repeats the same recording.
- Restart behavior: FFmpeg loops the input while its process and output remain healthy.
- Operational check: watch FFmpeg output and YouTube stream and broadcast status.
Use a source intended to stay continuous
- Content: can suit a changing or continuous program rather than a repeated file.
- Restart behavior and configuration: depend on the source and process; confirm they support the intended stream.
- Operational check: verify media continues reaching YouTube and the broadcast has not completed.
Or let it run in the cloud
- Upload a recording or build a playlist in StreamNeo.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
