YouTube RTMP Publish Rejected With Error Code 2: Troubleshooting

The exact YouTube RTMP “publish rejected” code 2 is not defined in public help. Follow the key, endpoint, connection and ingest checks in order.

If YouTube says an RTMP publish was rejected with error code 2, first refresh the stream key and copy the current stream URL from the active Live Control Room setup. Then check whether your encoder failed to connect, connected but was rejected, or delivered a stream that YouTube flagged for an ingest problem. YouTube’s public help pages do not define this exact error phrase, so the code alone does not identify the cause.

What does YouTube RTMP publish rejected with error code 2 mean?

The exact phrase “publish rejected with error code 2” is not defined in the YouTube Help pages located. Do not assume it always means a bad stream key, blocked port, or codec mismatch. The useful clues are the full encoder log and the corresponding message in YouTube Live Control Room.

There is a historical OBS forum report of a different-looking error: a connection to YouTube’s RTMP server failed with -2. That 2020 report concerned an OBS connection failure on macOS; it is not an authoritative explanation of YouTube assigning “publish rejected code 2.” Read the OBS forum thread.

Troubleshoot the rejection in order

  1. Capture the exact context. Note the complete error text, encoder or app name and version, whether the message says “connect” or “publish/rejected,” and the stream-health message in Live Control Room. Keep the stream key private; do not include it in a public screenshot or log.
  2. Refresh the stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, select Stream, copy the key for the intended stream, and replace the key in your encoder. YouTube recommends this for errors when starting a third-party encoder. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  3. Copy the current endpoint and confirm the protocol. Use the stream URL shown in the active Live Control Room setup rather than a remembered or old URL. If you choose RTMPS, reveal and copy the RTMPS URL and use an encoder that supports RTMPS. For certain SSL errors, YouTube suggests port 443; that advice applies to the SSL-error case, not as a universal fix for code 2. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.
  4. Identify which diagnostic branch fits.
    • Connection never establishes: check the copied endpoint, protocol, network path, and encoder compatibility first.
    • Encoder connects, then YouTube rejects publishing: verify the stream key and the stream setup selected in Live Control Room; use the exact dashboard message to guide further checks.
    • YouTube receives the stream but reports health or format errors: inspect the codec, container, bitrate, video stream settings, and keyframe frequency against YouTube’s displayed warning. These are documented ingest-error categories, but they are not the cause of every publish rejection. YouTube Help: Live streaming error messages.
  5. Check the encoder and connection. Update the encoder, inspect its local output and error dashboard, and check CPU load. If the encoder appears to send a healthy stream but YouTube does not receive it reliably, test outbound internet connectivity. YouTube also suggests trying another encoder as a diagnostic; if the outbound connection is faulty, contact your internet provider. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
  6. Adjust stream settings only when the evidence points to ingest configuration. YouTube’s live-stream guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS and supported audio and video options. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says it should not exceed four seconds. Match the settings to the relevant Live Control Room warning; changing encoding settings will not fix an incorrect key or endpoint. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Common clues and what to check

What you see First checks
Encoder fails before connecting Current stream URL, RTMP or RTMPS selection, network connection, encoder support and its log.
Encoder starts but YouTube rejects the publish Refresh the stream key, confirm the intended stream setup, and compare the full rejection message with Live Control Room.
Stream appears in YouTube but has health or format warnings Follow the dashboard’s specific warning; check codec, container, bitrate, video settings and keyframe interval as relevant.
RTMPS shows an SSL error Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS and that you copied the RTMPS URL. YouTube suggests port 443 for certain SSL errors.
OBS log ends in “-2” Do not treat the historical OBS connection report as the definition of YouTube’s “publish rejected” code. Diagnose the current log and dashboard message.

Keep a YouTube channel live without leaving an encoder running

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping on a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and sends to YouTube only. This does not diagnose or guarantee a fix for this specific error; the stream key and active YouTube setup still need to be correct.
