Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?

YouTube’s live encoder guidance gives that setting for stereo; the fact that the video is prerecorded does not call for a different published bitrate. For 5.1 surround over RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube recommends AAC at 384 Kbps and 48 kHz.
Choose the setting by channel layout
| Audio sent to YouTube | AAC bitrate | Sample rate | Protocol notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stereo | 128 Kbps | 44.1 kHz | YouTube’s recommended live encoder settings for RTMP/RTMPS; HLS guidance gives the same targets. |
| 5.1 surround | 384 Kbps | 48 kHz | For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube says 5.1 surround is supported only with AAC. HLS guidance gives the same bitrate and sample rate. |
These are YouTube’s published live-ingest recommendations, not results from a comparative listening test. The settings describe the audio your encoder sends to YouTube; YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so they do not guarantee that each viewer receives the identical encoded audio stream. YouTube’s live encoder settings provide the RTMP/RTMPS recommendations, and its HLS guidance covers that ingest protocol.
Set up AAC for a prerecorded stream
- Check the source and output channel layout. Confirm whether the audio reaching the encoder is stereo or 5.1. Do not select a 5.1 target if the encoder is sending stereo.
- Set the AAC bitrate and sample rate. For stereo, use 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz. For 5.1, use 384 Kbps and 48 kHz where the ingest workflow supports 5.1.
- Match the settings to the ingest protocol. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS audio, but its 5.1 surround support over those protocols is AAC-only. For HLS, YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 audio; check its HLS-specific codec and packaging requirements if you use that protocol.
- Test a representative segment before going live. Include audio and video movement similar to the actual stream. Check the Live Control Room preview, then monitor stream health during the event. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom for the outgoing stream. YouTube’s live encoder guidance recommends testing beforehand and describes the bandwidth headroom.
Do not substitute upload settings for live ingest
Upload recommendations answer a different question. YouTube’s upload troubleshooting guidance lists AAC-LC at 128–256 Kbps, but that range is not a reason to raise a stereo live feed above YouTube’s explicit 128 Kbps live recommendation. Use the live encoder guidance for audio sent as a live stream, whether the picture comes from a camera or a prerecorded video.
HLS-specific packaging checks
If your encoder sends HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS, bitrate and sample rate are only part of the setup. YouTube’s HLS requirements specify transport-stream segments lasting 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Verify the encoder’s packaging against the HLS ingest requirements; these packaging details do not apply to a typical RTMP/RTMPS setup.
