Switching from RTMP to RTMPS does not, by itself, require a new video format. First check the exact warning in YouTube Live Control Room. If the encoder cannot connect, verify that it is using the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for your stream; SSL errors may call for port 443, while a timeout can mean the encoder does not support RTMPS. If it connects but health is still poor, investigate the reported encoding or bandwidth issue separately.
Start with the warning YouTube actually shows
In Live Control Room, look beside the Health Indicator and note the full message and timestamp. An unresolved warning may continue to appear. Red errors are critical and can prevent an event from starting or cause viewer problems; yellow errors are moderate and may reduce quality. The message is the best starting point: a health warning can concern the video or audio settings even when RTMPS is connected correctly. YouTube’s stream-health guidance describes errors across encoding format, bitrate, keyframes, audio and video streams, and resolution.
If the encoder cannot connect over RTMPS
Use the RTMPS URL, not just the old RTMP address
RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL to encrypt the stream in transit. YouTube supports it, but the encoder must support RTMPS and must be given the RTMPS server URL—not merely the RTMP URL with a different-looking setting. YouTube notes: “You can stream to YouTube Live with RTMPS, a secure extension to the popular RTMP streaming video protocol.” YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions explain the connection requirements.
- Open the stream or scheduled event in Live Control Room and select the Stream tab or its stream settings.
- Use the lock control under Stream settings to reveal the RTMPS URL. The interface may show an RTMP URL by default, so explicitly reveal and copy the RTMPS one.
- Paste that server URL into the encoder’s server or ingest URL field, then enter the matching stream key.
- If the encoder offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, try it before manually entering connection details; confirm that the preset is actually set to RTMPS.
SSL or certificate error
Check that both the protocol and server in the configured address are the RTMPS values supplied in Live Control Room. If the URL appears correct but a certificate error persists, try port 443 in the URL or the encoder’s port setting. Keep the actual server host YouTube gave your stream; any host in general documentation is only an example.

Connection timeout
Recheck the server URL, then confirm in the encoder’s documentation that it supports RTMPS. Update the encoder if an update is available and look for its YouTube RTMPS option. YouTube cautions: “If you’re still having trouble, then your encoder may not support RTMPS.” If support is absent, changing resolution or bitrate will not make that encoder establish an RTMPS connection.
If it connects but the health warning remains
A successful RTMPS connection and a healthy stream are separate things. Follow the precise category in Live Control Room rather than changing transport repeatedly. YouTube’s current encoder settings page lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and supported codecs including H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; the appropriate bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. The settings below are YouTube Help recommendations (page publication date not stated); check its current table for your exact configuration. For a concrete reference, YouTube’s table lists 14 Mbps recommended for H.264 at 1080p30 and 10 Mbps recommended for AV1 or H.265 at 1080p30. These are settings for those codec and format combinations, not universal targets. Use the applicable row in the current table rather than treating either number as a general bitrate.
Check upload bandwidth before changing hardware
The available upload capacity must accommodate the stream bitrate. YouTube recommends roughly 20% headroom above the bitrate; disruptions or other devices sharing the connection can reduce the capacity actually available to the encoder. For dual-streaming or failover, allow for the combined primary and backup bitrates, plus headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend setting up a stream at least two hours before the event and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before its scheduled time.

- Test on the same network and with the same encoder settings you intend to use live.
- Use representative motion and audio; a static test image may not reveal problems that occur with the real programme.
- Preview the feed in Live Control Room, watch the health messages, and confirm the event is reachable before the scheduled start.
Tell a connection failure from a stream-health problem

The title alone does not reveal the warning text, encoder model, bitrate, or network conditions, so it cannot identify one certain cause. YouTube’s official help pages were accessed October 3, 2026; their publication dates are not stated, and interface labels and recommendations may change.
