Estimate a 24/7 stream’s Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) public-internet egress by multiplying its actual total bitrate by the seconds it runs, then compare the resulting monthly data with the 10 TB/month free threshold Oracle lists. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings, a continuous 1080p60 stream with stereo audio is about 5.55 decimal TB over a 30-day month; 2160p60 (4K) is about 16.24 decimal TB. The 4K example exceeds 10 decimal TB by roughly 6.24 TB before any other traffic, so the possible charge depends on the OCI source region, current account entitlement, and Oracle’s billable-unit conversion.
What OCI egress counts in this estimate
For this calculation, egress is data sent from your OCI-hosted encoder to YouTube’s live ingest. It is not the traffic YouTube later sends to viewers: YouTube transcodes a live ingest into multiple playback formats, and that downstream delivery is separate from the OCI-to-YouTube connection. The OCI estimate is therefore based on the transmitted ingest rate, not on the number of viewers. YouTube’s live encoder guidance describes its ingest settings and playback workflow.
The bitrate calculation estimates one stream, not necessarily the total outbound transfer for your OCI tenancy. Other workloads or transfers can add to the same monthly total. Nor is the result a guaranteed invoice: actual traffic can vary, and account-specific entitlements and billing units need checking.
Calculate monthly data from bitrate and runtime
For a stream with a constant total bitrate:
Monthly data in bytes = total stream bitrate in bits per second × streaming seconds ÷ 8

For a 30-day month, use 2,592,000 seconds (30 × 24 × 60 × 60). Divide the resulting bytes by 1,000,000,000,000 to express the estimate in decimal TB. For a closer calendar-month estimate, substitute the actual number of seconds in that month. If the video bitrate does not include audio, add the separately encoded audio bitrate before calculating.
The following figures use YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations plus its recommended 128 kbps stereo-audio bitrate. They are calculations, not measured traffic, and assume a continuous constant-bitrate stream for 30 days. They do not include protocol overhead, retransmissions, backups, monitoring, software updates, or other OCI egress.

| YouTube H.264 example | Video + stereo audio bitrate | Estimated data over 30 days | Against 10 decimal TB |
|---|---|---|---|
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps + 0.128 Mbps = 8.128 Mbps | About 2.63 decimal TB | Below the threshold on its own |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps + 0.128 Mbps = 17.128 Mbps | About 5.55 decimal TB | Below the threshold on its own |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 50 Mbps + 0.128 Mbps = 50.128 Mbps | About 16.24 decimal TB | About 6.24 decimal TB above it |
The video settings are YouTube’s recommendations for H.264 live ingest; they are example inputs rather than a promise that every encoder will transmit exactly that rate. For other frame rates, use the bitrate for the setting you actually plan to run. YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30, 8 Mbps for 720p30, and 42 Mbps for 2160p30, with 128 kbps as its recommended stereo-audio bitrate. Check YouTube’s live encoder settings for current guidance.
Compare the estimate with OCI’s free allowance and regional rates
Oracle’s Virtual Cloud Network pricing page lists the first 10 TB per month of public-internet egress as free and says intra-region data movement is not charged. Oracle’s Always Free resources page separately describes 10 TB per month of outbound data. Which allowance applies to a particular tenancy is account-dependent; confirm the current entitlement in Oracle Console rather than assuming both allowances stack or apply identically. Oracle Virtual Cloud Network pricing and Oracle Always Free Resources describe the published allowances.

Use the tenancy-wide outbound total, not only the stream bitrate estimate. Match the GB/TB unit basis used by Oracle’s calculator and bill; decimal TB and binary TiB are not interchangeable. The table’s rate figures come from Oracle’s global price-list PDF, while Oracle’s public pricing page establishes the 10 TB threshold but does not expose those overage figures in its rendered pricing details.
Worked threshold check
In the 1080p60 example, the stream alone uses about 5.55 decimal TB over 30 days, below the published 10 TB threshold. In the 2160p60 example, the stream alone uses about 16.24 decimal TB, or roughly 6.24 decimal TB beyond 10 decimal TB. Multiplying that excess by a regional per-GB rate gives only a rough illustration: first confirm the account’s allowance, current rate, unit conversion, and any other tenancy egress.

Choose the right bitrate and leave upload headroom
Resolution alone does not determine the estimate. Frame rate and codec affect YouTube’s recommended bitrate, and bitrate is what drives the first-order transfer calculation. Use the settings your encoder will actually send; do not treat a recommendation as a measured rate for your setup.
- YouTube recommends H.264 video at 17 Mbps for 1080p60 and 50 Mbps for 2160p60; its recommended stereo audio bitrate is 128 kbps. Add audio if it is not already included in the total.
- YouTube lists constant bitrate (CBR) encoding and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds.
- YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for encrypted transmission to and through Google’s servers.
- YouTube recommends 20% upload-bandwidth room beyond the total streaming bitrate, including primary and backup feeds where used. This is an upload-capacity recommendation, not a multiplier for the egress estimate: calculate egress from the rates actually transmitted.
For example, a single 17.128 Mbps 1080p60 feed needs upload capacity above its total stream rate with YouTube’s recommended headroom. Do not add that headroom to the 17.128 Mbps egress input unless the transmitted rate itself increases.
Steps to make an estimate for your own OCI stream
- Record the encoder’s actual output settings. Note video bitrate, audio bitrate if separate, frame rate, and whether a backup feed will also transmit. Use YouTube’s live—not upload—settings as a reference, and verify the configured values in your encoder.
- Find the intended runtime. For continuous operation, calculate the exact month’s seconds or use 2,592,000 seconds as a transparent 30-day convention.
- Calculate stream data. Add separate video and audio bitrates, multiply by seconds, divide by 8, then convert bytes to decimal TB if that is the unit you want to compare.
- Add other OCI outbound traffic. Include other resources and transfers in the tenancy; the stream-only number cannot establish the tenancy’s total billable egress.
- Confirm the allowance and source region. Check the account’s current free entitlement and the OCI region hosting the sender in Oracle Console or the current Oracle cost estimator.
- Estimate only the excess. Subtract the applicable free allowance from the monthly tenancy total, flooring at zero, then multiply by the current regional overage rate. Match Oracle’s billing units and verify the estimate against its calculator.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the reason for running an OCI server is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is another option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud service loops uploaded video, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. It sends to YouTube only and does not stream from a camera.
- One flat price per slot for any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card, once per account.
- Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support.
Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its pricing page for details. Start your free first day on StreamNeo.

Common estimate errors
- Counting viewer playback as OCI egress: the estimate here covers OCI’s ingest feed to YouTube; YouTube handles viewer playback delivery.
- Using video bitrate but forgetting separate audio: add separately encoded audio before calculating the total rate.
- Applying the 20% upload headroom as extra traffic: headroom is about connection capacity, not a transfer surcharge or egress multiplier.
- Comparing a stream-only total with the tenancy allowance: other OCI workloads may also send data out, so include them for a tenancy estimate.
- Mixing decimal TB and binary TiB: use consistent units and Oracle’s current billable-unit basis when estimating overage.
- Treating a published rate as a guaranteed current quote: verify the source region, current price, account entitlement, and rate-card timing before relying on a charge estimate.
