Not automatically. A dedicated streaming appliance trades a recurring cloud fee for an upfront purchase, continuous electricity, and the work of keeping the device, network, and stream running. A cloud loop service adds a recurring fee but can keep uploaded video streaming after your local computer is off. Without a verified current appliance price and measured power draw, there is no defensible appliance-specific break-even; compare both options over the same period using your own measured costs.
First, compare like with like
“Streaming appliance” can mean a standalone encoder that sends a live feed to YouTube, while “cloud service” may mean either a managed prerecorded-video loop or a much larger cloud broadcast system. Those are not automatically equivalent. YouTube says, “An encoder converts your video into a digital format to stream on YouTube.” It supports both software and standalone hardware encoders, and lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone H.264 encoder for direct YouTube Live streaming. The listing establishes relevance, not its current price or power use. YouTube Help: encoder requirements and options.
A managed loop service serves a different need: it plays uploaded recordings or playlists continuously without requiring your computer to stay on. YouTube’s guide also lists Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streaming, but the guide does not establish its current price or terms. YouTube Help.
Which costs belong in the comparison?
| Option | Cost shape | Check before deciding |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated hardware encoder | Upfront purchase, electricity, and any required supporting equipment | Current device price; measured continuous wall draw; compatible source and workflow; local power and network reliability |
| Existing PC running encoder software | Potentially no new computer purchase, but electricity, broadband use, occupied hardware, and recovery effort remain | Incremental measured power; sustained upload capacity and data limits; unattended restart and recovery |
| DIY virtual private server (VPS) | Recurring compute and data-transfer charges, plus setup and operations time | Included outbound transfer and excess rates; whether the job needs encoding or can copy an existing stream; monitoring and restart setup |
| Managed cloud loop | Recurring service charge; after upload and launch, the local machine can be off | Current plan terms, supported quality and storage, stream-slot count, recovery and support scope |
| Full cloud live-video stack | May include encoding, packaging or origination, and delivery to viewers | Region, outputs, bitrates, traffic, cache ratio, and whether you need viewer delivery rather than just sending a feed to YouTube |
Electricity is only one part of the decision. Include acquisition cost, transfer or bandwidth charges, setup and operating time, reliability, and the cost of recovering a stream after an interruption. Add internet cost only if one option causes a different incremental charge for your connection.

Calculate your own hardware and cloud totals
Measure the appliance or PC
Use a plug-in power meter to measure the device’s actual wall draw while it is streaming, rather than treating the power-supply rating as its consumption. For a full month of continuous operation, estimate energy as:
monthly electricity = measured watts Ă· 1,000 Ă— hours per month Ă— local price per kWh

Use the hours in your actual comparison period and the electricity tariff that applies to your location. If you amortize a device purchase, state the assumed useful life in months and any expected residual value; do not present an assumed lifespan as an established device fact.
Compare equal periods and service scope
Over the same period, use:
hardware total = purchase price + electricity + required accessories/maintenancecloud total = service charges for the same period + any upload/storage or overage charges
Keep operator time visible as a separate factor: setup, monitoring, troubleshooting, and restarts have different value for different channel owners. Do not turn it into a universal cash amount. A break-even calculation is useful only when the device price, measured draw, service terms, and comparison period are all grounded in values that apply to you.

AWS estimates cover viewer delivery, not a simple YouTube loop fee
AWS’s undated live-streaming deployment guide, accessed in 2026, models a 540p event with about 1,000 viewers in US East (N. Virginia) at $69.74 per hour: $1.99 for MediaLive, $0.51 for MediaPackage, and $67.24 for CloudFront. Its modeled 1080p event with about 10,000 viewers is $1,505.60 per hour, including $3.75 for MediaLive, $9.29 for MediaPackage, and $1,492.56 for CloudFront. These are scenario estimates under the guide’s specified output, bitrate, viewing, and cache assumptions—not general rates or a like-for-like price for a service that sends a loop to YouTube. AWS says estimates are guides, may be higher than actual costs, and can change. AWS Live Streaming on AWS cost estimates.
AWS MediaLive charges depend on configuration: input pricing varies with codec, bitrate, and resolution; output pricing also depends on frame rate. AWS documents charges for idle push inputs and channels as well, so a precise estimate requires the actual region and configuration. AWS Elemental MediaLive pricing.

Vendor scenarios are useful inputs, not independent measurements
StreamNeo’s comparison article, published 3 July 2026, uses a hypothetical 120 W mid-range desktop and estimates 86.4 kWh per month; it also describes a Raspberry Pi 5 at 8–12 W and an ₹8,000/$80 upfront kit estimate. These are the vendor’s scenarios, not independent meter readings or a universal benchmark. The same article models one 1080p stream at 4,500–6,000 kbps as about 1.4–1.9 TB of monthly upload traffic; actual traffic depends on bitrate and runtime. StreamNeo lists its monthly slot price as ₹999/month in India and $9.99/month internationally in that article; pricing and terms can change. StreamNeo cloud-versus-PC cost calculator.

Choose a dedicated appliance when its workflow fits
- You need a standalone encoder for a live source or a production workflow that uses external audio/video equipment.
- You can verify the purchase price, measure its continuous draw, and provide reliable power and upload connectivity.
- You are comfortable managing stream interruptions and any restart or recovery process the appliance does not handle for you.
YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as supporting dual-stream outputs and optional scheduled playback of prerecorded media without a computer. That makes it a relevant device to investigate, but the cited YouTube listing does not establish its current retail price or typical continuous wall draw. YouTube’s encoder list.

Choose a managed cloud loop when local uptime is the burden
- Your channel mainly needs uploaded recordings or a playlist to repeat continuously.
- You want the stream to continue without leaving a local PC running.
- You value managed recovery and support enough to include them in the comparison, rather than judging only by the monthly fee.
For a custom broadcast workflow that must reach viewers through a separately configured delivery stack, an AWS estimate may be relevant; it should not be compared as though its packaging and CDN delivery were included in a one-slot YouTube loop service.
Copyright, reused content, and channel readiness
A 24/7 schedule does not grant rights to the video, music, or other material in a stream. Confirm that you own the content or have permission covering its use in a continuous YouTube broadcast; review the platform’s current rules and the terms of any licenses before looping recordings. Copyright compliance and YouTube monetization eligibility are separate questions: permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization, and repeated or minimally transformed material may raise reused-content concerns. Review YouTube’s current copyright policies and YouTube channel monetization policies. Check that the channel is eligible to live stream and that its live-stream settings and stream key are configured before planning an unattended schedule.
Or let it run in the cloud
For prerecorded YouTube streams, StreamNeo is a managed cloud-loop option: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It runs uploaded videos to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Your computer can be off; it supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. StreamNeo’s monthly price is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for the service details and current plans. Start the free first day on StreamNeo.
Quick Recap
Practical checks before committing
- Write down the exact job: live camera or production feed, prerecorded loop, or a full viewer-delivery system.
- For hardware or a PC, record actual streaming wall draw and check your upload connection and data allowance.
- Use the same evaluation period for the device and service; include recurring charges, required accessories, transfer, and maintenance.
- Check current device and service terms directly before purchase or signup; prices and availability can change.
- Decide who will notice and fix a dropped stream, and whether automatic recovery or a manual restart is required.
- Confirm content rights and YouTube channel eligibility independently of the streaming method.
