To run a rotating story playlist on YouTube Live, put compatible video files in an FFmpeg concat list, loop that list as an input, encode the resulting feed, and send it to the server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. The playlist controls what plays; YouTube’s ingest settings control how the feed is delivered. The example below is a starting point to adapt and test with your own files and FFmpeg build—not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 service.

What you need before building the playlist

Prepare story videos you have the right to stream, an FFmpeg installation with the encoder you intend to use, a reliable upload connection, and a YouTube channel able to create live streams. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure ingest. Its Live Control Room provides the server URL and stream key that your encoder needs; keep the key private because anyone with access to it may be able to broadcast to your stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

  • Decide the order in which the stories should play. Check the video and audio streams, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, and durations of each file using your local media inspection tools.
  • Choose an output profile your host can encode and your upload connection can sustain. The worked example uses H.264 at 1080p30; that is a practical starting profile, not a universal requirement.
  • Make a plan for process and network interruptions. A looping input does not make a computer, process, or internet connection failure-proof.
  • Plan separately for recording the broadcast if you need a complete archive. A live feed and a retained recording are different things.

Choose the right FFmpeg concatenation method

Concat demuxer: compatible files, no re-encoding at the playlist stage

The concat demuxer reads a text list and presents the listed files one after another. It is appropriate when the files have matching streams, codecs, and time bases. FFmpeg adjusts timestamps between files, so inaccurate file durations or streams whose actual lengths do not align can produce timestamp artifacts or gaps. Review the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation and the documentation for your installed FFmpeg release.

Concat filter: differing inputs that need a consistent encoded output

If the source clips differ in stream layout or other properties, normalize them in advance or use the concat filter and re-encode to a common output. FFmpeg’s video concatenation FAQ recommends the filter when re-encoding is needed. This offers more control over a consistent output, at the cost of additional encoding work. Do not confuse the concat demuxer with the concat protocol: the protocol joins files at the container level and is suitable only for certain formats.

Create and check the concat playlist

1. Put files in playback order

Keep the playlist and media in a directory the FFmpeg process can access. Use simple relative paths where possible, and avoid paths from untrusted sources. The following is an example FFconcat list; replace the filenames with your own accessible files and keep each entry in the intended order:

ffconcat version 1.0
file 'stories/story-01.mp4'
file 'stories/story-02.mp4'
file 'stories/story-03.mp4'

Save it as playlist.ffconcat. FFmpeg’s safe-path checks are enabled by default for the concat demuxer. Keeping files under the working directory and using ordinary relative paths usually avoids needing to disable those checks. If a filename contains an apostrophe, escape it according to FFmpeg’s FFconcat syntax rather than assuming ordinary shell quoting rules apply.

2. Test the sequence once before looping

From the directory containing the list, ask FFmpeg to read and map the playlist to a local test file or inspect its output before connecting to YouTube:

ffmpeg -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat -c copy playlist-test.mkv

This test can expose unreadable paths, incompatible streams, and timestamp problems. It does not normalize dissimilar source files; if the sequence fails or the output has gaps, inspect the inputs and prepare matching files or switch to a concat-filter workflow that re-encodes them.

Set YouTube’s ingest profile

YouTube’s encoder guidance checked on 2026-10-03 lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingest, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe frequency of two seconds (not over four seconds). AAC or MP3 audio is supported. For the example below, H.264 is chosen for a 1080p30 SDR feed. YouTube recommends 10 Mbps for H.264 1080p30, with 5 Mbps as the listed minimum; these are ingest recommendations, not guarantees about the quality your network can deliver. Check the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table before going live.

  • Set video to 1920Ă—1080 at 30 frames per second, with H.264 and CBR at 10 Mbps if your host and upload connection can sustain it. If not, choose a lower supported profile; YouTube lists 4 Mbps recommended and 3 Mbps minimum for H.264 720p30.
  • At 30 fps, a 60-frame GOP gives a two-second keyframe interval. Keep keyframes at two seconds where possible and do not exceed four seconds.
  • For SDR, YouTube lists Rec. 709 and 8-bit. The example uses stereo AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s recommended stereo audio setting.
  • Leave headroom in the upload connection for audio, protocol overhead, and normal network variation. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and checking stream health rather than treating a nominal speed as proof of a stable stream.

Loop the playlist and send it to YouTube

1. Copy the broadcast connection details

In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, create or schedule the broadcast, and copy its server URL and stream key. Store them privately in your shell environment or another secure method. In the command below, YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL and YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY mean the exact values copied from that broadcast’s setup; do not publish them or put them in a public script.

2. Start the looped encoder

For compatible inputs and an FFmpeg build with libx264, this Bash-style example loops the concat input, reads it in real time, and encodes a 1080p30 H.264/AAC feed. Adapt and test the filters and settings for your material, installed build, and available hardware:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -i playlist.ffconcat
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -vf "scale=1920:1080:force_original_aspect_ratio=decrease,pad=1920:1080:(ow-iw)/2:(oh-ih)/2"
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 10M -minrate 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"

The optional audio map (0:a:0?) lets the command proceed if a clip has no audio stream, but it does not create sound for silent clips. If some inputs lack video or audio, or have incompatible stream layouts, resolve that in preparation or use the concat filter instead of assuming this single command will repair them. Scaling and padding preserve the full picture inside a 1920Ă—1080 frame; they can add bars when a source has a different aspect ratio. The veryfast preset trades some compression efficiency for lower encoding load. If the host cannot keep up, lower the output profile or choose a suitable preset and test again.

3. Confirm the live feed before leaving it running

Wait for the encoder preview and stream health indicators in Live Control Room. Listen to the audio and check moving scenes, transitions between stories, picture framing, and warnings. YouTube specifically recommends tests that include audio and movement similar to the intended stream. A command that starts successfully is not proof that viewers receive an error-free feed. FFmpeg’s available options vary with the installed build, so consult the matching FFmpeg documentation if an option or encoder is unavailable.

Set the audience and clear the material

Make the audience selection accurately

YouTube requires creators to declare whether a video or live stream is Made for Kids. Preschool-directed stories may be intended for children, but the creator must make the audience selection accurately for the actual content and applicable requirements; do not rely on automated classification alone. Set the live stream’s audience in Live Control Room and consult YouTube’s audience-setting guidance.

Understand feature limits on Made for Kids live streams

YouTube lists live chat and related features as unavailable on Made for Kids live streams; personalized ads are disabled, though contextual ads may still appear. Comments, reminders, and other features are also restricted. Do not plan on live chat, Super Chat, personalized advertising, or reminder-driven growth for a stream set to Made for Kids. See YouTube’s live-streaming restrictions and its audience guidance.

Use stories, music, and images you are entitled to broadcast

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for every story, recording, illustration, song, and other asset in the playlist, including rights to stream it on YouTube. A successful FFmpeg connection does not establish copyright permission, and the platform’s audience setting does not grant rights to the material.

Keep the stream going and preserve an archive

Looping repeats the playlist only while FFmpeg, its host, the input files, and the network keep working. For a DIY setup, decide who or what will notice a stalled process, how it will be restarted, and how the broadcast will be checked after a restart. The FFmpeg and YouTube guidance cited here does not certify a particular supervisor, host, or 24/7 uptime design. Test the failure and recovery process on your own system rather than assuming the initial command handles every interruption.

Do not treat a continuous broadcast as a complete recording. YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured, and recommends a separate local archive. If preserving the full programme matters, record locally or arrange another archive plan independently of the live output. Size storage from the actual bitrate and the retention period you need; no storage capacity is universally sufficient. Details are in YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Troubleshoot common playlist and ingest failures

  • FFmpeg cannot find a listed clip: Check the working directory, spelling, case, permissions, and relative path. Keep paths accessible to the FFmpeg process and test the playlist once before looping.
  • The concat test reports stream or timestamp errors: Compare the inputs’ stream layout, codecs, time bases, and durations. Normalize them to matching properties or use the concat filter and re-encode; a demuxer list cannot make incompatible streams identical.
  • There is a gap, freeze, or artifact at a story boundary: Check for inaccurate duration metadata and unequal actual stream lengths. Re-prepare the affected clips and test transitions in the ordered sequence.
  • The encoder reports an unknown option or missing encoder: Check the installed FFmpeg build and its available encoders; the sample depends on libx264 and is not guaranteed to work unchanged on every build.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed or rejects the connection: Re-copy the server URL and stream key for the correct broadcast, check that the key is private and current, and review the Live Control Room status and warnings. Verify that the outgoing profile follows YouTube’s current ingest guidance.
  • The stream health indicator warns about bitrate or instability: Test the actual upload connection, lower the selected bitrate or resolution if it cannot sustain the chosen profile, and repeat a test with representative sound and movement.
  • The host falls behind or overloads: Check whether encoding is consuming too much CPU, especially with dissimilar sources or expensive settings. Use a lighter preset or lower profile only after checking the resulting stream quality and YouTube health indicators.
  • The 24/7 broadcast is missing from the archive: A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured by YouTube. Use an independent recording/archive plan if full retention is required.
  • Expected chat or ad features are absent: Check the stream’s audience setting. Made for Kids restrictions disable live chat and personalized ads among other features.
