To loop children’s stories in a vertical YouTube livestream, compose a portrait scene in OBS Studio, loop one prerecorded video with a Media Source or several with a VLC Video playlist, then send the scene to YouTube through Live Control Room. A loop keeps the media repeating; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. You still need to check the stream, encoder, computer, and internet connection—and make sure you have permission to broadcast every story, image, recording, and piece of music.
Before you set up the stream
Check YouTube eligibility
YouTube’s current guidance says livestreaming requires a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and a creator who is at least 16 years old. Check the channel’s status and eligibility in YouTube Studio before preparing a continuous broadcast; otherwise, the encoder setup may be ready while the channel cannot go live.
Prepare material you have the right to broadcast
Use original material or content for which you have permission that covers livestreaming on YouTube. Rights may apply separately to story text, illustrations, animation, narration, music, and recordings. Buying a picture book does not give you the right to broadcast its words or artwork. If you plan to leave a replay available, confirm that your permission also covers the archived version and the intended territory.
YouTube says livestreams are scanned for third-party content. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, a warning or interruption, or termination. Even licensed material may need the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID. When permission is uncertain, do not assume that credit, a purchase, or a noncommercial purpose is enough: use original or expressly licensed material, or get jurisdiction-specific advice.

Build and test the vertical story scene in OBS
1. Prepare the video and artwork
Gather the story videos, artwork, narration, and music you intend to use. Decide whether the broadcast will play one file repeatedly or move through a playlist. Check that the story remains understandable when viewed on a phone, including whether important words, faces, and illustrations are large and legible in portrait framing.
2. Compose for portrait viewing
Arrange the scene for a 9:16 vertical frame and preview the full composition before broadcasting. Keep essential text and illustrations away from areas that could be obscured by interface elements. If you plan to use YouTube’s dual-stream option, inspect the vertical result particularly carefully: YouTube describes that output as a center crop of the horizontal picture, which may cut off characters, captions, or story details. Other vertical layout options may be available in Live Control Room, but choose and review the actual layout before going live.

3. Add a single story video or a playlist
- For one file: In OBS, add a Media Source, choose the story video, and turn on Loop.
- For several files: Add a VLC Video source, create or select the playlist, and leave Loop Playlist enabled. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed.
- Check playback: Preview the scene and verify that the video, narration, and music play as intended, that the image fits the portrait composition, and that the media restarts or advances when it reaches the end.
OBS supports common video and audio files. Confirm the playback and audio behavior with your actual assets; a source that appears correctly in the scene is not proof that the live feed is reaching viewers.
4. Connect OBS to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and choose the encoder workflow.
- Use the stream key and connection details shown for that broadcast in YouTube’s encoder setup, and enter them in OBS’s streaming settings. Treat the stream key as a password: do not publish it or include it in a screen recording.
- Review the stream settings presented by YouTube and OBS. Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the selected format rather than relying on an old bitrate or resolution preset; the appropriate values depend on the output you choose.
- Start the encoder feed and check YouTube’s preview. Confirm that the portrait framing, picture, and sound are present before you start the public livestream.
- After going live, check the viewer-facing stream as well as the OBS preview. Keep an eye on the feed and be prepared to restart or repair it if the media, encoder, connection, or platform session stops.
The source documentation establishes the looping controls and encoder workflow, but it does not specify one bitrate, keyframe interval, or encoder preset that is right for every vertical story stream. Follow the current values shown for your YouTube stream and chosen output instead of treating a single setting as universal.

Choose portrait-only or YouTube dual output
YouTube describes horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 formats for Live Control Room streams. Its dual-stream workflow can provide both formats, with the vertical output described as a center crop; other vertical layout options may also be available. The choice of layout cannot be added after the stream has started, so make it before launch and inspect the result.
| Consideration | Portrait-only presentation | Dual output |
|---|---|---|
| Composition | Build the artwork for a portrait frame. | Check whether a center crop preserves story text, faces, and illustrations; review available layout options. |
| Viewing experience | Designed for portrait viewing on mobile. | Offers horizontal and vertical presentations, so check both before launch. |
| Discovery | Can suit YouTube’s vertical live experience. | Vertical viewers may encounter the vertical presentation while horizontal viewers use the conventional format. |
| Stream management | Use the selected portrait layout in Live Control Room. | YouTube describes a shared URL and chat for dual output; check the current Live Control Room options before launch. |
YouTube’s viewer guidance says the vertical live feed is available in the YouTube app, not currently on tablets. Viewers can enter full screen and browse other vertical live streams. Scheduled livestreams and Premieres do not appear in that feed. YouTube’s general live-streaming guide also says viewers can find vertical live streams while browsing Shorts on mobile. Treat this as a mobile-oriented discovery path, not a guarantee that every viewer or device will see the same format or placement.

Set the audience correctly for children’s stories
If the content is made for children, set the audience accordingly in YouTube Studio. Stories, songs, characters, and other child-directed subject matter are among the signals YouTube says creators should consider. Do not rely on automated classification to make the decision for you. YouTube says it trusts creators to set the audience accurately and may override a setting in cases of error or abuse.
A livestream designated made for kids has feature restrictions. YouTube’s help guidance lists live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, channel memberships, and Super Chat among the features unavailable on an individual stream set to made for kids. The designation does not automatically place the video in the YouTube Kids app.

What “24/7” means in practice
Looping a media source only automates playback while the source and broadcast are running. OBS documentation and YouTube’s encoder workflow do not promise that a particular computer, home connection, or channel will stay live continuously. A computer restart, OBS or media-source failure, internet interruption, or YouTube session issue can break the broadcast. Monitor the actual stream and plan how you will notice and recover from an interruption; a loop setting alone is not failover.
Pre-launch checks
- Confirm the channel is eligible to livestream and that the stream is configured as intended.
- Watch the YouTube preview to verify portrait framing, readable story details, and audible narration and music.
- Let the video reach its end once during testing to confirm that the single-file loop or playlist behaves as expected.
- Confirm the made-for-kids audience setting when it applies, and account for the resulting feature restrictions.
- Have a practical way to check that the viewer-facing broadcast remains live and that you can respond if it stops.
Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The vertical picture cuts off text or characters. | The scene was composed for landscape, or the dual-stream center crop does not fit the artwork. | Recompose the scene for portrait viewing or review the vertical layout options in Live Control Room before starting. |
| The story plays once and stops. | The Media Source loop option or VLC playlist loop is not enabled. | For one file, check Loop in the Media Source. For multiple files, check Loop Playlist in VLC Video. |
| VLC Video is unavailable or the playlist does not play. | VLC may not be installed, or the playlist/source may not be configured as intended. | Install VLC for the VLC Video source, then preview the playlist in OBS before broadcasting. |
| OBS shows the scene, but YouTube’s preview is missing or wrong. | The encoder feed, stream settings, or selected YouTube layout may not match the intended broadcast. | Check the stream key and encoder connection, review the current YouTube and OBS stream settings, and confirm the preview before going live. |
| The broadcast is interrupted after a copyright match. | A story element, illustration, music track, or recording may have matched third-party content. | Review the rights for every element and whether permission covers YouTube livestreaming. A license may also require Content ID allowlisting by the rights owner. |
| Viewers cannot use chat or comments. | The stream may be designated made for kids, which restricts those features. | Check the audience setting and YouTube’s listed restrictions; do not change an accurate child-directed designation simply to enable interaction. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a hosted option for looping uploaded videos to YouTube rather than keeping a computer and home connection running, StreamNeo works in three steps: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud service keeps the uploaded video loop running without a computer or home connection staying on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. StreamNeo’s published facts cover uploaded-video looping to YouTube, not vertical-specific layout controls, so confirm it fits your portrait presentation before choosing it.
Every slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot with no quality tiers; it includes 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists, 24/7 looping, automatic recovery, and support. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Plans are available by the day, week, month, six months, or year, and can be cancelled any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Start your free StreamNeo day.
