To give the same webcam a different look in different OBS scenes, add the camera once to a reusable base scene, add that scene to each destination scene, then apply a filter to each nested scene instance. This keeps one camera capture while letting each scene use its own treatment.
How OBS filters work across scenes
OBS filters can be attached to a source or to a scene. A filter on a shared webcam source changes that source’s treatment wherever it is used. To get different looks in different scenes, apply the filters to separate instances of a reusable camera scene instead. OBS’s Studio Overview Guide explains that filters can be added to sources and scenes.
This is useful for setups such as a neutral face camera in one scene and a cropped, color-corrected, masked, or keyed camera in another.
Set up a reusable webcam scene
- Create the base scene. In the Scenes panel, create a scene for the webcam, such as Camera base. In its Sources panel, add the camera once as a Video Capture Source. OBS uses Video Capture Sources for devices such as webcams; see the Video Capture Sources guide.
- Set the shared framing. Position and size the camera as needed. Keep this base scene free of effects that should differ between destination scenes.
- Add the base scene to each destination. Select a destination scene, add a Scene source, and choose Camera base. Repeat for each destination scene that needs the camera.
- Apply a filter to each scene instance. In the destination scene, open the Filters for its nested camera scene source and add the desired effect. For example, use Color Correction for a color treatment, Crop/Pad for framing, Image Mask/Blend for a mask, or Chroma Key for a keyed background. OBS’s filter overview is at OBS Filters.
- Repeat and label clearly. Give each destination scene or camera instance a useful name, such as Camera – neutral and Camera – keyed, so you can tell the looks apart while producing.
The exact arrangement is one Video Capture Source inside the base scene, with the base scene reused in each destination. An OBS forum moderator describes this nested-scene approach for applying different filters per scene: different filters for the same source in different scenes.

Choose between nested scenes and source cloning
| Approach | Best for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Nested base scene with filters on each scene instance | Different looks in different destination scenes using one webcam capture | Native scene organization; effects belong to each nested scene instance. |
| Source Clone plugin | A workflow that specifically needs separate filters on cloned webcam sources | Requires an external plugin, so check its current listing and compatibility with your OBS version before relying on it. |
Elgato’s OBS Link Scene Collection Guide recommends using one webcam source and adding the existing source to scenes as needed, rather than creating a new capture source for the same device in every scene. It recommends Source Clone when separate source-level filters are required. A plugin’s availability or compatibility can change, so verify its current status rather than assuming it works with every OBS release.
Send the camera output to a video-call app
If you want Zoom, Discord, or another application that accepts webcam video to receive OBS output, start OBS Virtual Camera and select it as the camera in that application. OBS Virtual Camera offers four output modes in its Virtual Camera Guide:

- 5-in-1 USB-C Hub: Experience comprehensive connectivity featuring a Power Delivery input, two USB-A 2.0 ports, a USB-A 3.0 port, and an HDMI port. (Note: The USB-C power delivery input port is only for connecting an external wall charger to power your laptop and cannot power peripheral devices.)
- 90W Pass-Through Charging: Achieve optimal charging with 90W pass-through power to your laptop, supported by a total input of 100W, with the hub reserving 10W for operational efficiency. (Note: Wall charger not included.)
- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Program: sends the regular OBS output.
- Preview: sends the Studio Mode preview; use this when you specifically want the preview rather than the program output.
- Scene: sends the selected scene.
- Source: sends the selected source.
Check the selected mode before joining a call. If you select a particular Scene or Source, the output stays tied to that selected item rather than following the normal program output.
Troubleshooting different webcam looks
- Changing one filter changes every scene. The filter is likely attached to the shared webcam source. Remove or adjust it there, then apply the desired filter to each nested scene instance.
- The camera appears more than once or behaves unexpectedly. Confirm that destination scenes use the existing base scene rather than adding a newly created capture source for the same webcam in every scene.
- A destination scene has no camera image. Check that the nested Scene source points to the intended base scene and that the Video Capture Source is present in that base scene.
- A call app shows the wrong OBS view. Check the Virtual Camera mode. Program, Preview, Scene, and Source do not all send the same output.
- A cloned-source workflow stops working after an update. Check the plugin’s current listing and compatibility for your OBS version; the nested-scene method avoids depending on that external plugin.
Or let it run in the cloud
The OBS method above is for changing a webcam’s look between scenes. If instead you want a pre-recorded video to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud: upload a recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file at its existing quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
