What the Streamlabs Plugin for OBS does
The plugin connects Streamlabs services and tools to OBS Studio. You can add supported widgets and overlays, manage some stream elements, and access Streamlabs chat and activity tools without building every element yourself as a browser source. It is a practical fit for creators who already prefer OBS and want Streamlabs features in that workflow.
The plugin is not the same as Streamlabs Desktop. Desktop is the company’s all-in-one streaming application; the plugin adds selected Streamlabs functionality to OBS. Streamlabs identifies features including Dual Output, Collab Cam, and Shared Storage as Desktop-only, so compare the two products if you need those tools. Streamlabs’ product page describes the choice as depending on whether you want to stay with OBS or move to an all-in-one environment.

Alerts, widgets, and event lists
Add Streamlabs widgets such as Alert Box, Chat Box, and Event Lists from OBS. The plugin’s quick-start guide also describes testing alerts through Test Events. After adding an alert source, move it above gameplay in the OBS Sources list if you want notifications to appear on top of the game.

Overlays and themes
Browse and add overlays from Streamlabs’ library. Streamlabs says the library has hundreds of free overlays and widget themes, alongside premium options that require Ultra. Its guide also describes thousands of professionally designed animated overlays, alerts, and transitions; these counts are vendor-reported, not independently verified. Adding an overlay may require restarting OBS.
Chat, activity, and recent events
The plugin can surface recent events and add Streamlabs Activity Feed and Streamlabs Chat docks within OBS. You can position the docks to suit your workspace, keeping those views accessible alongside your scenes and sources.

Cloudbot moderation and engagement
Cloudbot adds chat moderation and engagement options. Streamlabs lists filters for caps, emotes, paragraphs, links, symbols, and words, as well as features such as giveaways and minigames. The specific tools and their availability can depend on your Streamlabs account and configuration.
Tipping and Stream Labels
Streamlabs documents tipping setup and adding Stream Labels from inside OBS. Labels can display stream information without running a separate labels program. Choose the labels you want from the Streamlabs menu and add them as sources.

Reactive Overlays and Game Pulse
The plugin’s Vision features include Reactive Overlays and the Game Pulse Widget. Streamlabs describes Game Pulse as triggering graphics and sound effects in response to gameplay events. That is a vendor-described capability; behavior can depend on the game and setup.
Multistreaming
Streamlabs says server-side multistreaming through the plugin requires Ultra. The plugin itself is free to download and use, but that does not make every connected service or premium feature free.

Requirements and setup
Streamlabs’ quick-start guide, published May 20, 2026 and last updated October 1, 2026, specifies Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later. Check the current quick-start guide before installing, because compatibility and feature availability can change.
- Check compatibility. Confirm you are using Windows and OBS Studio 28.0.0 or later.
- Install the plugin. Download and run the installer from Streamlabs’ plugin materials, then open OBS.
- Complete onboarding. Follow the prompts in OBS to connect and configure Streamlabs.
- Add a widget. In OBS, open Streamlabs > Widgets, choose a widget, and select Add.
- Set its layer and position. In Sources, move the widget above gameplay or other elements it should cover, then position and size it in the preview.
- Configure and test. Open the widget settings in the browser window that appears, save your choices, and use Test Events to check alerts.
For labels, use Streamlabs > Stream Labels and add the label you want. To explore Vision features, enable Vision and add a Reactive Overlay or Game Pulse option. If an overlay does not appear after adding it, restart OBS as the guide advises for some changes.

Is the plugin free, and what requires Ultra?
Streamlabs says the plugin is free to download and use. Its documentation places server-side multistreaming and premium overlays or themes among Ultra features. Do not assume that every overlay, widget, or plugin feature is paid: Streamlabs also documents free overlays and themes and a range of tools available through the plugin. The official materials do not establish a current Ultra price here, so check Streamlabs directly for current subscription terms.
When to choose the plugin instead of Streamlabs Desktop
- Choose the plugin if you already produce your stream in OBS and want Streamlabs alerts, widgets, overlays, chat, or related tools without moving your whole workflow.
- Compare Streamlabs Desktop if you want the company’s all-in-one environment or need Desktop-only features such as Dual Output, Collab Cam, or Shared Storage.
Both options serve different workflows; the plugin is not a reason by itself to replace a setup that already works for you.
Common setup problems and fixes
- The plugin does not install or appear in OBS: Recheck the Windows and OBS version requirements, run the installer, and reopen OBS after installation.
- An alert is hidden behind the game: Move the alert source higher in the Sources list so it renders above gameplay.
- An alert appears unconfigured or untested: Open its settings in the browser window and use Test Events to verify the source.
- A newly added overlay is missing: Restart OBS; Streamlabs notes that some changes, including overlay additions, may require a restart.
- A multistreaming option or premium overlay is unavailable: Check whether the feature requires Ultra rather than assuming the free plugin includes it.
