In OBS, enable Loop on a single video’s Media Source, or enable Loop Playlist on a VLC Video source for several clips. Then verify the video repeats in the active scene and watch a complete cycle in YouTube’s preview before relying on the stream. A loop setting handles playback ending; it does not protect against unrelated scene, encoding, network, or media-decoding problems.
Choose the right OBS source

OBS documents both playback controls in its Media Sources guide. Pick a single repeating file if the stream should show the same video again and again; choose VLC Video if it should rotate through a list. VLC Video also provides shuffle and visibility controls.
Set a single video to repeat
- In OBS, select the scene intended for the live stream.
- In the Sources list, add or select the video’s Media Source, then open its properties.
- Enable Loop and confirm the video file is the intended one.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. If enabled, a non-looping source can disappear at the end rather than hold its final frame; looping is the setting that makes the file repeat.
- Apply the changes and let the video play through its end to confirm it starts again.
Loop a playlist of videos
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source.
- In the active scene, add a VLC Video source and add the clips to its playlist.
- Open the source properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- Check the source’s visibility and any shuffle setting, then apply the changes.
- Let the playlist reach its end and confirm it starts again without an unintended gap or blank screen.
Check the scene and verify the YouTube output
A source can be configured to loop correctly and still fail to appear in the stream if the wrong scene is live, the source is hidden, or its position and crop put the video outside the visible area. Before going live, confirm the looping source is visible in the scene you intend to broadcast and that it is sized and cropped as intended.
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s preview to check the outgoing stream before relying on it. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement, checking playback on watch pages and mobile devices, and monitoring audio and video quality continuously. If you send the stream through an encoder, YouTube’s setup requires entering the YouTube Live server URL and stream key in that encoder. YouTube also offers auto-start and auto-stop settings and DVR controls for viewers; none of these substitutes for enabling the loop on the OBS video source. Set the audience accurately for a kids’ stream
Choose the audience setting that accurately describes the stream. When a live stream is designated Made for Kids, YouTube disables features including live chat and live chat replay, comments on archives and upcoming streams, Super Chat, and reminder notifications for upcoming streams. Personalized ads are disabled, although contextual ads may be shown. Do not plan on chat interaction or reminder notifications for a stream with this designation. Review YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.

Troubleshoot a blank screen or playback gap
- The screen goes blank when one clip ends: For a single Media Source, confirm Loop is enabled. If Show nothing when playback ends is enabled, a non-looping clip can disappear at its end.
- The playlist stops after its last clip: Confirm the source is VLC Video, Loop Playlist is enabled, and VLC is installed.
- The video is absent from the live picture: Check that the intended scene is active, the source is visible, and its size and crop place it in the visible area.
- OBS shows video but YouTube does not: Check the YouTube Live Control Room preview and confirm the encoder has the correct YouTube Live server URL and stream key.
- The picture or audio degrades during playback: Monitor the outgoing stream and test representative audio and movement; a source loop does not prevent encoding, network, or media-decoding failures.
- You need to verify a fix: Run a complete cycle and check the actual YouTube output before depending on the stream.
