If an OBS playlist stops after a Windows update, first work out whether playback stopped inside OBS or YouTube ended the broadcast. For a multi-video playlist, check OBS’s VLC Video source, confirm VLC is still installed, and verify Loop Playlist and Visibility Behaviour. If the broadcast itself ended, check the event’s YouTube auto-start and auto-stop settings. Windows updates may be a useful timing clue, but the documented settings do not establish an update as the cause.
First identify what stopped
Watch the OBS preview and the YouTube broadcast separately. If the OBS source is no longer playing, troubleshoot the source and its media files. If OBS continues playing but the YouTube broadcast has ended or did not start, investigate the broadcast settings in YouTube Studio. The two systems have separate controls: OBS determines whether its media repeats; YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop settings affect the broadcast.
Choose the right OBS source for your promo
One promo file: Media Source
For a single local audio or video file, OBS’s Media Source is the straightforward option. Its Loop setting controls whether that file repeats. Check that the source still points to a file that exists and that looping is enabled.
Several promo files: VLC Video
For a sequence of files, use OBS’s VLC Video source, which supports a playlist. VLC must be installed separately. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the source can use the matching installation.

Check the playlist settings that affect playback
- Open the source properties. In OBS, select the scene containing the promo source, then open that source’s properties. Confirm that it is the intended Media Source or VLC Video source.
- Verify the playlist entries. For VLC Video, check that the listed files still exist at their configured locations and that VLC is installed. A Windows update may coincide with a change or failure, but the documented source requirements do not show that updates themselves cause this symptom.
- Enable
Loop Playlist. In VLC Video properties, this setting determines whether the playlist restarts after it reaches the end. It is distinct fromShuffle Playlist, which changes playback order rather than enabling repetition. - Review
Visibility Behaviour. This setting determines whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is hidden. If you change scenes or hide the source, choose the behavior that matches how you want playback to work, then test that transition. - For a single Media Source, check
Loop. VLC Video’s playlist setting does not control a separate Media Source. Confirm the loop option on the source type you actually use.
If the YouTube broadcast ended, check the event settings
In YouTube Studio, inspect the settings for the specific scheduled broadcast, including auto-start and auto-stop. These govern broadcast behavior; they do not make an OBS playlist repeat. YouTube’s reuse-stream-settings option also copies the auto-start and auto-stop selections, so check those values when configuring an event based on reused settings. Do not treat a YouTube broadcast setting as a substitute for OBS’s loop control.

- Open the relevant OBS scene and confirm the promo source is present.
- For a VLC Video playlist, confirm VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS, then check that the playlist files are still available.
- Verify
Loop Playlistor the Media Source’sLoopoption, as appropriate. - Check the VLC Video source’s visibility behavior if the source may be hidden during a scene change.
- Review the YouTube event’s auto-start and auto-stop selections if the broadcast fails to start or ends unexpectedly.
- Run a short private or unlisted stream test and observe both OBS playback and the YouTube broadcast.
This routine checks the documented controls; it does not assume that Windows updates are the cause.
