Good podcast interview questions help a guest tell a specific story, explain a decision, or reflect on what changed—not simply confirm what the host already knows. Start with the listener’s reason to tune in, research what the guest has said before, and prepare a flexible set of open-ended prompts that you can follow up on in the moment.
Start with the episode’s promise
Before drafting questions, finish this sentence: “After listening, my audience will understand, feel, or be able to…” That answer is the filter for every prompt. A question can be interesting and still not belong if it does not help deliver the episode’s promise.
Choose one central story, tension, or insight to investigate. For a documentary-focused show, that might be how a filmmaker found a subject, what evidence changed the direction of a project, or what a film leaves unresolved. The University of Illinois SIIP and Share guide recommends deciding the specific story or insight to uncover before writing questions.
Research the guest before you write
Read the guest’s biography and public work, then review at least one previous interview if available. Note what they have already explained often, what they have not had room to explore, and which details need clarification. Spotify for Creators advises hosts to demonstrate familiarity with a guest’s work and use previous interviews as research rather than repeat them.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- A claim: What has the guest said that is consequential or surprising?
- A turning point: What choice, discovery, or setback changed the direction of their work?
- An underexplored detail: Which part of the story has received less attention?
- A listener question: What might an audience misunderstand or want clarified?
Use those notes to make generic prompts specific. Instead of “Tell us about your career,” ask about the first project or moment that connects directly to this episode’s subject. Do not assume the guest’s feelings, motives, or conclusions; ask them to describe those in their own words.
How many questions should you prepare for a 30-minute interview?
There is no universal number. Two vendor guides offer overlapping but different planning suggestions for a 30-minute interview; treat them as starting points, not a quota or an evidence-based threshold.

| Guide | Suggested main questions | How to use the number |
|---|---|---|
| Descript, 2026 | 5–8 | A vendor recommendation for planning a 30-minute interview; leave room for follow-ups. |
| Riverside, 2026 | 6–10 open-ended questions | A vendor recommendation for planning a 30-minute interview; adjust to the guest and format. |
The difference is small enough to make the practical point: write a manageable set of anchor questions, not a script you must finish. A guest who answers with detailed examples may need fewer prompts; a short, tightly edited conversation may need more prepared transitions. The episode promise and the guest’s pace matter more than hitting a count.
Arrange questions into a story arc
A useful outline moves from context into the central issue, then follows choices and consequences toward reflection. This gives listeners a path through the conversation without requiring you to ask every prompt in order.

- Open with accessible context. Establish what was happening just before the story began, or clarify the problem for someone encountering it for the first time.
- Reach the central issue. Ask what changed, what was at stake, or where the difficulty emerged.
- Explore choices and evidence. Find out what the guest tried, what alternatives they considered, and what shifted their view.
- Follow consequences and lessons. Ask what happened next, what proved harder than expected, and what the guest would do differently.
- Close with reflection and usefulness. Ask what they hope listeners remember, what important question remains, and where listeners can learn more about their work.
This arc follows the story-planning approach in the University of Illinois SIIP and Share guide: identify the issue, where the heat or conflict lies, and what the future impact may be.
Podcast interview questions to adapt for your next episode

Opening and context
- What were you focused on just before this story began?
- What is the first moment that helps explain how you got here?
- What do people often misunderstand about your work or experience?
- How would you explain the central problem to someone encountering it for the first time?
Decisions and turning points
- What happened that changed the direction of your work?
- What options did you consider at the time?
- What made you choose that path, and what did you give up by choosing it?
- Was there a moment when you realized your original plan was not working?
Process and evidence
- Can you walk us through a specific example?
- What did you try first, and what did you learn from the result?
- What evidence changed your mind?
- What part of the process is less visible from the outside?
Obstacles, conflict, and lessons
- What was the hardest part that people may not have seen?
- What did you misunderstand at the beginning?
- What advice sounds good in theory but fails in practice?
- What would you do differently if you faced the same situation again?
Reflection and closing
- What belief have you changed your mind about, and what led to that change?
- What do you hope people take away from this conversation?
- What question do you wish more interviewers asked you?
- Is there anything important I did not ask about?
- Where can listeners learn more about your work?
Make questions open without making them vague
An open question gives the guest room to answer in their own terms. A vague question gives them little direction. The strongest prompts are both open and focused: they ask about one moment, choice, process, or lesson without prescribing the answer.
| Less useful approach | Why it can stall | Try instead |
|---|---|---|
| “Was that difficult?” | It invites a yes-or-no answer. | “What made that difficult?” |
| “You felt alone when that happened, right?” | It supplies an emotion and nudges the guest toward agreement. | “How did that affect you?” |
| “Tell us everything about your work.” | It is broad, so the guest must guess what matters to the episode. | “What part of this process is least visible to people outside it?” |
| “Your first plan failed, so what did you do?” | It assumes the host’s interpretation is correct. | “How did you assess whether the first plan was working?” |
Spotify for Creators’ examples make the same practical distinction: a leading question can supply a guest’s feelings, while a more open version lets the guest explain them. Avoid stacking several questions into one prompt; ask one clear thing, listen, then decide what to ask next.

Prepare follow-ups, then listen for the opening
Follow-ups often bring out the detail a prepared list cannot anticipate. Keep a few cues in your notes, but use them only when the answer leaves something useful to explore:
- What happened next?
- Can you give me a specific example?
- What made that difficult?
- What changed your mind?
- What did you mean by that?
Let the guest finish before choosing one. If a revealing answer serves the episode promise, follow it even if it means moving the outline around. If the conversation drifts away from the listener’s question, use a brief transition to return to the main thread. Greg Bresnitz, a podcast interviewer featured by Spotify for Creators, describes treating a guest’s answer as a reason to ask a follow-up when it piques his interest. That is a useful reminder to stay curious rather than read the next prepared line automatically.
A practical prep checklist
- Write the listener outcome in one sentence.
- Review the guest’s public work and prior interviews.
- Choose the central story or question this episode will pursue.
- Draft a short arc from context through tension to reflection.
- Keep one main idea in each anchor question.
- Replace assumptions about feelings or motives with neutral prompts.
- Mark a few follow-up cues and listen for specifics worth pursuing.
- End with a useful reflection, a chance to add what was missed, and where to find the guest’s work.
Keep a completed video episode running on YouTube
If you also publish recorded podcast episodes as video, StreamNeo is a separate way to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops from the cloud, so no home computer or connection has to stay on. Each slot streams what you upload, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
