To rerun an existing gaming VOD as a YouTube Live stream, use OBS to play and encode the video from a computer, or use a cloud service that streams the uploaded video from its own infrastructure. With OBS, the computer and its internet connection must remain available for the broadcast. A cloud service removes that local-PC dependency, but its current limits and price need checking with the provider.

YouTube’s verified encoder directory describes OBS as open-source software and Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded-video streams. Those listings establish category fit, not endorsement or current pricing. YouTube’s encoder directory is a starting point for understanding supported tools.
Rerun the VOD with OBS
This workflow assumes you have a local video file that you are authorized to rebroadcast. YouTube supports encoder-based streams, but first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable streaming ahead of the time you plan to go live.
- Prepare the VOD. Confirm that the video file plays correctly, has the intended audio, and is suitable for a continuous broadcast. Review game footage and music rights before scheduling.
- Create or schedule an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room, create a stream, and set its title, visibility, and schedule. YouTube supports reusing stream settings; verify the selected event and settings before each broadcast.
- Copy the stream key into OBS. In the scheduled stream’s stream settings, copy its key and configure OBS to connect to YouTube with it. YouTube describes a stream key as both a stream’s password and address: keep it private, and reset it if you believe it has been exposed.
- Add the VOD as a media source. In OBS, add the authorized video file as a media source, check its playback and audio, and configure the scene as needed. If you want the video to repeat, enable looping for the source and confirm it behaves as intended before going live.
- Check the event controls. YouTube offers auto-start and auto-stop controls. Confirm the settings on the actual scheduled event rather than assuming they are enabled or configured as you want.
- Start the encoder at the planned time. Start streaming in OBS and check Live Control Room to confirm YouTube is receiving the feed. Keep the computer and its network connection available for the duration; if either becomes unavailable, the local encoder cannot continue sending the stream.
What to check for long broadcasts
Viewer rewind and DVR
YouTube DVR can let viewers pause and rewind during a live stream. YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable when a stream exceeds 12 hours. An archived recording may still be available afterward, depending on YouTube processing and your settings. If viewers need to catch up during the broadcast, consider whether a planned stream duration beyond that threshold suits the event. YouTube’s DVR guidance explains the feature and its limitation.

Scheduled stream settings
Scheduling and reusing settings can reduce repeated setup in YouTube Studio, but they do not remove the need to confirm the event, stream key, and auto-start or auto-stop choices. These controls affect the YouTube event; they do not make a local computer or connection stay online.
Review content rights and monetization before rebroadcasting
Game footage and music
YouTube says game-content monetization depends on commercial-use permission from the game publisher. Extended gameplay without appropriate permission or qualifying commentary may not be accepted for monetization. Check the publisher’s current streaming policy, and review the VOD for music or other material that requires separate rights. YouTube’s live-stream terms require providers to have the necessary rights for live and archived content, including applicable music rights. Repetitive content and channel monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy applies to live streams. A July 15, 2025 clarification renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and describes repetitive or mass-produced material lacking materially varied creative, educational, or other viewer value as ineligible. This does not establish that every VOD rerun is automatically ineligible; eligibility depends on the channel and content. Do not assume rebroadcasting alone guarantees monetization. Read YouTube’s channel monetization policies.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube does not receive the OBS feed: Verify that OBS is using the stream key for the correct scheduled event, then check Live Control Room for connection status. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update OBS with the new key.
- Streaming is not available yet: First-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Enable live streaming in advance rather than relying on last-minute activation.
- The VOD stops or does not repeat: Check the media source’s file path and playback/loop settings in OBS, then test the source before starting the scheduled broadcast.
- The broadcast ends unexpectedly: With a local encoder, confirm the computer has not slept, OBS remains open, and the network connection is active. YouTube’s auto-stop control may also affect the event; inspect its scheduled settings.
- Viewers cannot rewind far enough: DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. This is a YouTube feature limitation, not an OBS setting.
- A VOD or live stream triggers a rights or monetization issue: Review the publisher’s permissions and the video’s music rights, then check YouTube’s current policy. Changing from OBS to a cloud service does not change those obligations.
