The playlist only supplies media; it does not start a broadcast by itself. Before going public, enable live streaming, confirm you have the necessary music rights, and test the entire setup in an unlisted stream.
What a YouTube ambient radio setup does
An encoder such as OBS plays the ambient music, pairs it with a still image or other visual scene, and sends the resulting live feed to YouTube. The broadcast can be built from either one looping media file or a playlist that repeats. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documentation explicitly includes a 24/7 feed as a use case, but that describes a broadcast model—not a guarantee that your equipment, connection, account, or stream will stay available continuously.
YouTube for Artists reported that over 30% of daily logged-in YouTube viewers watched live content in Q2 2025. That is platform-wide context, not a forecast of audience size for an ambient channel. YouTube for Artists’ live-streaming guidance also explains the distinction between encoder streaming and simpler mobile or webcam streams: an encoder offers more customization and control.
Before building the stream
Enable live streaming
If this is your first live broadcast, verify the channel and enable live streaming in advance. YouTube for Artists advises doing this at least 24 hours before the planned first stream. Confirm that live access is available in the current YouTube Studio interface rather than waiting until launch day.

Clear the music rights
Confirm that you are authorized to use both the composition and the specific sound recording in a YouTube livestream. Check that the permission covers your intended territories, monetization, and any archive or replay you plan to keep. Keep a copy of the agreement. A label, distributor, or other rights owner may manage tracks through Content ID; ask the owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist and coordinate with them before broadcasting.
A license or a “royalty-free” label does not, by itself, ensure that YouTube will leave the stream uninterrupted. YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party matches, and licensed content may still cause a disruption if the channel is not allowlisted by the owner. The exact permission needed depends on the rights and intended use; YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams describes the platform’s enforcement risks, not whether a particular license covers your use.

Build the looping playlist in OBS
Choose a playlist or one long file
OBS’s VLC Video source supports a media playlist and has a Loop Playlist property, enabled by default. This is useful when you want to revise the program track by track. If your complete ambient program is already a single local audio or video file, OBS’s Media Source has a Loop property; using one file means fewer playlist entries to maintain. These are workflow tradeoffs, not guarantees of reliability. OBS documents Media Source audio formats including MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV; check supported formats for your playlist in the selected source and installed VLC environment.
Add the media source and visual
- Create an OBS scene: Add the visual presentation you want viewers to see, such as an image or other scene element.
- Add the music input: Add a VLC Video source and configure its media playlist, or add a Media Source for one local file.
- Set repeat: For a playlist, confirm Loop Playlist is enabled in the VLC Video source properties. For one file, enable Loop in the Media Source properties.
- Check the scene: Confirm the visual is framed as intended and the music is audible at an appropriate level. Verify that the playlist advances and returns to the beginning.
OBS’s documented controls and supported Media Source formats are described in its Media Sources guide (dated 2022-01-11). Available playlist behavior can depend on the source and installed VLC environment, so verify your actual media files in OBS before scheduling a public stream.

Create and test the YouTube broadcast
- Create a live broadcast in YouTube Studio: Use YouTube’s live workflow and select the encoder connection option. Follow the current Studio prompts to connect your encoder; the exact interface may change.
- Connect OBS: Use the stream connection details provided by YouTube Studio. Treat the stream key as a credential: do not publish it or share it with people who should not control the broadcast.
- Run an unlisted end-to-end test: YouTube for Artists specifically advises: “Test your live stream in an unlisted stream before your go-live date, especially for high-production or high-investment events.” Check the actual audio level, visual, playlist transition and repeat, network stability, and any rights alerts.
- Go public only after checking the test: If the test reveals a problem, correct it and test again before changing the broadcast to public.
Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API documentation includes a 24/7 feed use case and was updated 2026-09-14 UTC. Its separate HLS ingestion guide is protocol guidance for encoder vendors; it is not a requirement for an ordinary creator setting up an OBS stream.
Choose whether to keep an archive
Decide before launch whether you want YouTube to retain a replay of the broadcast. Archive rights should be included in your music permissions if you plan to keep or publish one. YouTube notes that Content ID claims on an archived live stream may be made after the stream completes, so check Studio after the broadcast as well as while it is live. If you do not need a replay, make an intentional archive choice in the current live workflow rather than assuming the broadcast will have no post-stream rights consequences.

Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: Confirm the channel has been verified and live access enabled. For a first stream, account for YouTube for Artists’ advice to do this at least 24 hours in advance.
- The music does not repeat: Check that the VLC Video source’s Loop Playlist property is enabled, or that Loop is enabled for a single-file Media Source. Confirm the source is reading the intended media items.
- The playlist does not play as expected: Check the formats and paths in the selected source and the installed VLC environment. Test each transition in OBS before connecting to a public broadcast.
- YouTube warns about a copyright match or interrupts the feed: Review the alert in Studio and contact the relevant rights owner. Confirm the specific livestream permission and request Content ID allowlisting where applicable; do not assume a license automatically prevents a match.
- The stream stops or becomes unavailable: Check YouTube Studio and the encoder connection, then address the error shown there before restarting. A 24/7 use case in API documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted operation.
- A claim appears after the broadcast: Review the completed stream in Studio. YouTube says claims on archived live streams may occur after the stream finishes.
The documentation cited here does not establish a minimum computer specification or require particular hardware. Choose a setup that can run your encoder and maintain a stable connection, and use the unlisted test to check your actual configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not keep a computer running at home, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded-video YouTube stream running from the cloud. Upload your ambient recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on; the video streams as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card; after that, the Monthly option is $9.99 per month. You are responsible for clearing the music rights either way. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
