If a streaming app will not cast, keeps buffering, or cannot play offline, start with the app’s own support for your device and connection—not by assuming your phone is broken. Update the app and operating system, check Wi-Fi and permissions, and then follow the service-specific steps below. Casting, mirroring, downloads, and minimum device requirements differ by service.
How do I stream from my phone to my TV?
- Install or update the official app. Sign in and check whether your TV has the service’s native app; if it does, you may not need to cast from your phone.
- Confirm the TV or receiver supports the app’s casting method. A TV with a streaming device attached may be able to receive a cast even if the TV itself does not have the app.
- For Chromecast, check the network. Google Cast and Disney+ instructions call for the phone and receiver to be on the same Wi-Fi network. Make sure the receiver is powered on.
- Use the cast control inside the streaming app when available. Casting sends playback to a compatible receiver; screen mirroring sends or duplicates the phone’s screen and is a different feature. A service may support one route but not the other.
Netflix and Disney+ document different supported methods. Netflix says AirPlay is not supported on iPhone or iPad, while Disney+ documents Chromecast and AirPlay for supported mobile devices. Check the service’s current instructions for your region, device, and app version: Netflix casting guidance, Netflix on AirPlay and mirroring, and Disney+ casting and AirPlay.
Why can’t my phone find the TV or streaming device?
- Check compatibility. For Netflix casting, the service says iPhone and iPad need iOS or iPadOS 16 or later, and Android devices need Android 9 or later. These are Netflix requirements, not universal rules for every streaming app. See Netflix’s cast-icon guidance.
- Check power and Wi-Fi. Turn on the TV or receiver, and verify that the phone and receiver are connected to the same Wi-Fi network when the service requires it. A guest network or different network can prevent discovery.
- Review permissions. On iPhone or iPad, check whether the app has permission to access the local network. The exact setting path varies by OS version.
- Update the app and device software. Follow the app’s instructions for your phone model and operating system rather than relying on one menu path for all devices. Hulu provides service-specific update steps in its app update guidance.
- Reset only as a last resort. Netflix warns that resetting its app deletes saved downloads and signs you out. Try its no-devices-found steps first: Netflix troubleshooting for devices not found.
A missing cast icon can mean the app, phone software, permissions, network, or receiver is incompatible or misconfigured; it does not by itself show that the phone is faulty. If the TV cannot run the app and has no compatible receiver, a supported streaming device may be an option—but check that it works with the service and your TV before buying hardware.
Why does streaming buffer or show no connection?
- Check whether the phone is actually online. Try another site or app. Disney+ notes that a no-internet message can appear when the device is not connected to Wi-Fi or cellular data; see its network troubleshooting guidance.
- Try a stable connection. Netflix identifies weak or unstable internet as a possible cause of slow loading and buffering. It also warns that cellular, mobile hotspot, and satellite connections may be too slow for playback. See Netflix playback troubleshooting.
- Update both the app and the device. An outdated device can contribute to playback problems. Use the update instructions for the specific service and device rather than assuming that every phone has the same settings.
- If the connection remains unreliable, contact your internet provider. The services’ cited guidance does not establish one minimum speed that applies to every app, video quality, and network, so a universal speed threshold would be misleading.
Can I download shows to watch offline?
Some services allow downloads, but eligibility depends on the service, plan, device, and title. Disney+ says subscribers with eligible plans can download supported content in its mobile app for viewing without an internet connection. Check the title’s download option and the current rules for your plan and device before relying on offline playback: Disney+ download guidance.

Does Netflix work with AirPlay or screen mirroring?
Netflix says AirPlay is not supported on iPhone or iPad. Its help material discusses supported casting, wired adapters, and wireless mirroring as distinct options; the available method depends on the device and setup. Disney+ documents Chromecast and AirPlay for supported mobile devices. Do not assume that an app’s cast button and your phone’s system-wide screen mirroring will behave alike.
