How to Start a Podcast as a Creator: A Practical Launch Guide

Plan a sustainable show, record an episode, choose host-managed or self-hosted RSS, test and submit to Apple Podcasts, and decide whether YouTube belongs in your launch.

To start a podcast, define a show you can sustain, record an episode, choose how to host its audio and RSS feed, then test and submit that feed to directories such as Apple Podcasts. You can also publish episodes on YouTube, which treats podcasts as playlists of videos. A microphone, professional studio, and paid hosting plan are not universal requirements; the essential setup depends on how you choose to distribute the show.

1. Shape a show people can understand and you can keep making

Before buying equipment or choosing a host, decide what the show offers and who it is for. A clear premise makes it easier for listeners to know whether an episode is meant for them—and gives you a practical filter for deciding what belongs in the show.

  • Audience: Who do you want to reach?
  • Promise: What can a listener expect from each episode?
  • Format: Will you record solo, interview guests, work with a co-host, or tell a narrative?
  • Cadence: Choose a release schedule you can maintain alongside your other work.
  • Starting ideas: Draft a short show description and several episode ideas before launch.

These are planning recommendations, not platform rules. A focused premise and realistic schedule are more useful starting points than an ambitious calendar you cannot sustain.

2. Record and edit an initial episode

Record an episode that demonstrates the show’s format and promise. For spoken audio, a microphone can be useful, but Apple’s submission guidance does not require a particular microphone, audio interface, headphones, or room treatment. Choose equipment to solve a real problem in your setup rather than treating a shopping list as a prerequisite.

Listen through the finished recording before publishing. Check that speech is understandable, the beginning and ending are intentional, and any music or other material is cleared for your intended use. Your chosen host may also impose file-size or upload requirements, so check its current limits when you export.

3. Choose how to create and manage your RSS feed

An RSS feed is the distribution file that lets podcast apps retrieve show and episode information and audio. A hosting provider can create and manage it; as Apple puts it, “A hosting provider takes the elements that form your podcast and creates an RSS feed.” Apple Podcasts for Creators explains hosting options. Apple also allows creators to generate and host a feed independently.

Use a podcast host

A host is a practical choice if you want a service to generate the feed and help manage technical details. Compare providers against your actual needs, including feed control, analytics, storage, migration, transcripts, chapters, video, subscriptions, and advertising tools. Features, costs, and terms vary; confirm them on the provider’s current pages before signing up.

Host the feed yourself

Self-hosting gives you direct control over the RSS feed and media files, but also leaves you responsible for keeping the feed and audio publicly reachable and technically compatible. Apple’s RSS feed requirements are the relevant baseline for an Apple catalog submission.

4. Prepare the feed and episode files for Apple Podcasts

For an Apple Podcasts catalog submission, the RSS feed must be public and conform to RSS 2.0. It needs required tags, show artwork, and at least one episode. Apple’s feed requirements and episode guidance describe the expected structure.

Check each episode’s feed entry

  • Give every episode an enclosure with its audio URL, file length, and media type.
  • Use a globally unique episode identifier (GUID) and keep it unchanged when updating that episode’s metadata or file.
  • Check tag names and casing; RSS tags are case-sensitive in relevant contexts, so a misspelled or incorrectly cased tag can cause problems.
  • Make sure the audio file and feed can be reached publicly by Apple’s systems.

The server should support HTTP HEAD requests and byte-range requests, which help clients inspect and retrieve media correctly. If you self-host, verify these behaviors with your server setup; if a provider hosts the feed and audio, ask it to confirm support.

Export supported audio

Apple accepts MP3 and AAC audio for RSS episodes and recommends AAC for RSS delivery. Its audio requirements specify recommended bitrate ranges according to sample rate and whether the file is mono or stereo. Check that page when exporting rather than assuming a single setting suits every file or platform. Your podcast host may have additional upload constraints.

5. Test, validate, and submit the show

Testing before submission gives you a chance to spot broken artwork, incorrect metadata, or playback and download issues. Apple distinguishes technical validation from content review: a feed that passes validation is not automatically approved for the catalog.

  1. Review the public feed. Check the show name, description, artwork, episode information, enclosure links, and stable identifiers against Apple’s requirements.
  2. Test the feed. Follow Apple’s RSS feed testing guidance to inspect artwork, metadata, streaming, and downloads.
  3. Validate it. Use Apple’s podcast validation guidance to catch technical issues before submitting.
  4. Submit the show. Submit in Apple Podcasts Connect or through a participating host, following Apple’s new-show submission steps.
  5. Complete the applicable details. Provide requested show information, rights declarations, contact information, territories, release timing, and transcript settings as applicable.
  6. Allow for review. Technical validation and Apple’s review are separate stages; passing one does not guarantee approval in the other.

6. Decide whether to publish on YouTube

YouTube defines a podcast as a playlist and its episodes as videos. You can create a podcast in YouTube Studio or, where the feature is available, connect an RSS feed. The available route and features depend on current platform rules. See YouTube’s podcast distribution guidance and instructions for creating a podcast in YouTube Studio.

If you have an audio-only episode, you can package it as a video presentation using a static show image or an audiogram. Review YouTube’s current requirements and policies before publishing, including rights to any audio or visual material. YouTube describes podcast discovery and analytics features, but availability and eligibility can depend on its current rules.

7. Choose a distribution path that fits your workflow

Decision What to weigh
Host-managed or self-hosted RSS A host can generate and manage the feed and may reduce maintenance; self-hosting gives you direct control but makes you responsible for technical availability and compatibility.
Apple catalog or direct RSS following Apple says catalog submission can make a show available through Apple Podcasts and catalog-referencing third-party services. Direct RSS following has narrower discovery features. See Apple’s distribution explanation.
Audio-only or YouTube as well RSS supports audio podcast distribution; YouTube presents podcasts as playlists of video episodes and offers Studio and, where available, RSS routes.
Which host features matter Prioritize only the tools your workflow needs, such as analytics, transcripts, chapters, video, subscriptions, or dynamic ads. Confirm current terms and costs directly with providers.

Apple says catalog-submitted shows can be available in over 170 countries and regions; that is a statement about Apple’s platform reach, not a forecast of a show’s audience. Apple’s distribution guidance describes the distinction between catalog distribution and direct RSS following.

Common launch problems and what to check

  • The feed cannot be validated: Check that it is public, conforms to RSS 2.0, includes required tags and artwork, and has at least one episode. Inspect spelling and tag casing.
  • An episode does not appear or play: Verify its enclosure URL, media type, and file length, and confirm the media is publicly reachable. For self-hosted audio, check HTTP HEAD and byte-range support.
  • An episode changes unexpectedly after an update: Confirm its GUID has not changed. Apple requires a globally unique identifier that remains stable for the episode.
  • The feed validates but the show is not approved: Validation checks technical compliance; Apple’s content review is a separate step. Review the submission details and rights declarations.
  • An upload is rejected by the host: Check the host’s current file-size and format limits, then compare the export against Apple’s supported MP3 or AAC formats and recommendations.
  • A YouTube podcast option is unavailable: Check YouTube’s current eligibility and feature availability for your account and region; its podcast and RSS features are subject to platform rules.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you also want to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running continuously, StreamNeo is a separate option from podcast hosting: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay running at home. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only and plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
