Run FFmpeg in a Docker container, mount your podcast archive into it, and send a real-time audio/video stream to the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Audio-only episodes need a video track—such as static cover art—because the stream must include video as well as audio. This guide gives you a starting configuration, explains what to test, and distinguishes Docker restarts from actual stream recovery.

Before you start

This approach assumes Docker and its daemon are already available on a host that can remain online, your YouTube channel is eligible to go live, and your connection has enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings. You also need permission to rebroadcast every episode, music track, clip, image, and other asset in the archive. Owning a podcast file does not necessarily grant live-streaming rights to everything in it.

  • Have the archive files available on the Docker host.
  • Choose whether to stream one combined file, a playlist of episodes, or a repeating archive.
  • Decide what viewers will see during audio playback: cover art, a waveform, or another video track.
  • Keep the YouTube stream key private. Treat it as a channel-specific credential; do not publish it in a Compose file, shell history, screenshots, or logs.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for ordinary live content. RTMPS carries RTMP over an SSL connection and uses port 443; use the valid ingestion endpoint and path provided for your broadcast rather than copying an example URL. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.

Create the YouTube broadcast and get its connection details

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or schedule a broadcast, then choose the stream settings appropriate to your channel.
  2. Copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown for that stream. YouTube’s LiveStreams API documentation likewise describes the ingestion address and stream name as values returned for the stream.
  3. Keep the broadcast private or unlisted while you test. Do not put a real key directly into a command you may save, share, or expose in process listings. Supply it through a private mechanism appropriate to your host, and avoid printing it in diagnostics.

Channel access, broadcast setup and interface labels can change. Follow the current values shown for your own broadcast; never reuse another channel’s credentials.

Make the archive available to Docker

A bind mount exposes a host directory at a path inside the container. For playback, mount the archive read-only where practical so the encoder can read files without modifying them. Docker documents bind mounts and their options at its bind-mount guide.

docker run --rm
  --mount type=bind,source=/srv/podcast-archive,target=/archive,readonly
  jrottenberg/ffmpeg:latest
  -version

This example checks that the container can start; it is not a complete streaming command, and the image tag is only an example. Replace the host path with your archive directory and select an FFmpeg image and version suitable for your deployment. Before streaming, verify from inside the container that the expected files are visible and readable. A container may run as a user that lacks permission to read host files.

Docker-managed volumes persist data beyond a container’s writable layer, but an archive already stored on the host is commonly exposed with a bind mount. Keep the source files at a stable path and confirm that any required volume or mount is present after container recreation.

Inspect files and choose the audio and video streams

FFmpeg’s input mapping and encoding depend on the actual media. Inspect the codecs, dimensions, frame rate, sample rate, and stream layout before building the final invocation. For example, run ffprobe against a file from inside the container, or use another trusted media-inspection tool. Do not assume every episode has the same format or track order.

For an audio-only archive, supply a legitimate video track. A static cover image is a simple option; a waveform or animated visualizer takes more setup and may use additional CPU or GPU resources. Whichever you choose, check that it remains readable and appropriate for the entire broadcast. YouTube’s encoder recommendations identify H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio as supported choices, but they do not prescribe a validated command for your particular source files. Review the current YouTube encoder settings before publishing.

Starting point for a single file with a static image

The following is an illustrative starting point, not a tested, universal command. It assumes an image and an audio file are available in the container. Replace the endpoint, paths, stream key, resolution and encoding choices for your broadcast and host. Keep the real stream key out of the published command and pass it privately in your deployment.

  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_VALID_YOUTUBE_ENDPOINT/YOUR_PATH/PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY"

Because shell quoting and credential exposure depend on how you launch the process, do not paste a real key into a saved script or shared command history. Use a private runtime configuration and ensure the complete endpoint and key are not written to logs. This illustrative command also does not provide a recovery supervisor, guarantee that the image and audio end together, or preserve a playback position after a restart. Test its behavior with your files before using it for a public broadcast.

Settings to check against YouTube’s guidance

  • Transport: RTMPS, with the valid YouTube ingestion endpoint and path for your stream; the documented connection uses port 443.
  • Video codec: H.264 is listed in YouTube’s encoder guidance. Choose a resolution and frame rate your host can encode reliably.
  • Frame rate: YouTube’s guidance lists frame rates up to 60 fps. A static image does not require a high frame rate, but the output still needs a valid video track.
  • Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For a 30 fps output, a 60-frame GOP corresponds to two seconds; adjust the GOP if you change frame rate.
  • Rate control: YouTube’s page specifies constant bitrate (CBR). Set video bitrate to a level appropriate for the chosen resolution and current platform recommendations; the cited guidance should be checked for its current bitrate table before you go live.
  • Audio: The guidance lists AAC or MP3. For stereo AAC, it recommends 128 Kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. Verify that your source mapping actually selects the intended audio track.

These are platform recommendations, not proof that a given command will work with every file or host. Recheck YouTube’s current encoder guidance when configuring the stream.

Choose how the archive plays

FFmpeg documents -re for reading input at native, real-time rate and -stream_loop for looping an input. A looped single episode is not the same as a playlist of separate episodes: separate files introduce transition and metadata questions that need their own implementation and testing. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for option behavior and placement; ordering options around inputs and outputs matters.

Design What to decide and test
One combined archive file Check whether the file plays through correctly, what happens at end of file, and whether a continuous broadcast could exceed YouTube’s automatic-archive threshold.
Separate episode playlist Test transitions for gaps, audio level changes, timestamps and ordering. Decide whether titles or other episode metadata need to change; a single continuous encoder session does not automatically make those changes for you.
Static cover art Confirm the image stays visible and legible for the full audio run. It is generally simpler than animation, but it does not add motion or episode-specific visuals.
Waveform or animated visualizer Check CPU/GPU load, readability and rendering continuity on the actual host. YouTube’s encoder guidance establishes compatibility settings, not that a visualizer improves audience outcomes.

Do not assume episode joins are gapless, that a reconnect resumes at the correct episode, or that timestamps remain continuous. Test the real playlist, including its final item and the behavior when the list repeats.

Start and monitor a test broadcast

  1. Launch the container with the archive mounted and the stream key supplied privately. Confirm that FFmpeg opens the intended inputs and does not report permission, mapping, or encoding errors.
  2. Use an unlisted test broadcast where possible. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room and confirm that both the video and audio are present.
  3. Listen for clipping, silence, level changes and interruptions. Watch the stream health indicator and inspect the output at the intended resolution and frame rate.
  4. Test at least one episode transition, loop boundary, end-of-file case, and reconnect scenario before relying on the setup unattended.
  5. Keep a separate recording plan if retaining the complete output matters. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same for a longer continuous stream. Check the current broadcast setup guidance and keep a local recording if you need an assured copy.
  6. When finished, stop the encoder deliberately, end the broadcast in Studio, and confirm that the resulting YouTube archive and any local recording are usable.

YouTube also recommends testing before going live, previewing in Live Control Room, monitoring stream health and audio/video quality, and checking local archive integrity. See encoder recommendations and live-streaming tips.

Keep the container running—and understand what that does not solve

A Docker restart policy can restart a container after it exits. For example, --restart unless-stopped asks Docker to restart it unless you deliberately stop it. Docker explains restart policies in its container-start documentation.

A restart policy is not a stream-recovery system. It does not guarantee a gapless YouTube broadcast, reconnect to a failed ingestion session successfully, restore playback position, or ensure the broadcast remains active in YouTube. FFmpeg’s documentation includes a generic RTMP FIFO example for attempting recovery after temporary failure, but that example is not a tested YouTube recipe or a promise of seamless playback. Any retry logic, health checks, and state recovery must be implemented and tested for your specific setup.

Troubleshoot common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no stream Wrong protocol, endpoint, path, key, or a network route that cannot reach the ingestion service. Copy the current RTMPS URL and key from the correct broadcast, check that the endpoint is valid and the host can connect over port 443, and inspect FFmpeg errors without exposing the key.
FFmpeg cannot open an archive file Incorrect mounted path, filename mismatch, or host/container permissions. Verify the bind-mount source and target, list the files at the in-container path, and check read permissions for the container user.
Video appears but audio is missing Wrong input mapping, an unexpected stream layout, or an unsupported/failed audio encoding path. Inspect the source streams, explicitly map the intended audio track, and test the output in Live Control Room preview.
Audio works but the picture is absent or rejected The input is audio-only or the video output is invalid for the selected profile. Add a valid visual input, map it as video, and verify the H.264 output and frame rate against current YouTube encoder guidance.
Playback is too fast, stutters, or has uneven joins Input pacing, encoding load, timestamp discontinuities, or inconsistent files in a playlist. Use real-time pacing for the intended live input, check host CPU/GPU capacity, inspect timestamps, and test each transition with the actual archive.
The process restarts but the broadcast does not recover cleanly Docker restarted the process, but YouTube ingestion state or FFmpeg playback position was not restored. Test the full reconnect path and decide how the implementation should obtain a fresh connection and choose a resume point; do not treat a restart policy as sufficient recovery.
The YouTube archive is missing or incomplete The stream exceeded the stated automatic-archive limit, or the broadcast ended abnormally. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream of 12 hours or more; keep a separate local recording if preserving the entire output is important.
