When the break is over, switch back to the next episode. The timer is part of the video sent to YouTube; it does not automatically change your stream’s audio, so plan and test both.
Build a countdown scene in OBS
- Create two scenes. In OBS, make one scene for your podcast and another for the intermission. Scenes let you arrange the layout and add media and devices to the program output. See the OBS Studio overview.
- Add the timer to the intermission scene. Add a Browser Source and load a countdown page URL or a local countdown file. OBS Browser Source supports both URLs and local files; the documentation does not specify a particular countdown provider or guarantee how a timer starts or resets. Choose a timer that suits your intended break and test its behavior in the scene. See OBS Browser Source documentation.
- Make it legible in your stream layout. Check the timer at the resolution and canvas size you plan to use. Confirm that the numbers are visible and that the timer remains available for the full break. If you use a web page, consider what happens to it if your internet connection drops; a local file avoids depending on an online timer page, but its behavior still depends on the file you choose.
- Choose a transition. OBS documents Cut and Fade transitions. A cut changes scenes immediately; a fade makes the handoff more gradual. If you want to prepare the next scene before showing it to viewers, use Studio Mode to view the live scene separately from the scene being prepared. Rehearse the transition with your chosen scenes.
- Set the audio for the break. Decide whether viewers should hear silence, music, or a host voiceover. Check which audio sources are active in the countdown scene and listen to the result. A visual overlay does not change the stream’s audio sources. YouTube advises muting the microphone if you step away during a break; see its live-stream monetization and breaks guidance.
- Rehearse the full handoff. Run through the end of an episode, the scene change, the full countdown, and the return to the next episode. Verify whether the timer starts or resets when you show it, whether the audio is right, and whether the display remains readable. YouTube also advises testing a break overlay before using it live.
Send the composed program to YouTube
OBS sends the combined scene output—including the podcast video and countdown—to YouTube through an encoder connection. In YouTube Live Control Room, use the encoder details and stream key with your streaming software. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Follow the current YouTube encoder setup instructions and RTMPS guidance.
For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s encoder workflow is to start the encoder and, once the preview appears in Live Control Room, click Go live. Menu labels and interface details can change, so check the current YouTube Studio instructions when setting up your broadcast.
Run the intermission during the broadcast
- At the end of the current episode, switch from the podcast scene to the countdown scene.
- Check that the intended break audio is active and the timer is visible to viewers.
- When the break ends, switch to the next episode scene.
OBS provides the scene switching; whether the timer starts, pauses, or resets on a scene change depends on the timer implementation. Confirm that behavior before you go live rather than assuming every browser timer behaves the same way.

Choose a web timer or local file
| Option | What OBS supports | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Web URL | Browser Source can load a URL. | Whether the page stays available if your internet connection drops, how it looks at your canvas size, and whether its timer starts or resets as you need. |
| Local file | Browser Source can load a local file. | Whether the file works at your target canvas size and has the timer behavior and duration your show requires. |
The official OBS guidance establishes that Browser Source can load either kind of content; it does not compare timer services or prescribe a particular tool. Test your chosen implementation in the actual scene.
Troubleshoot common countdown problems
- The countdown is missing from the live program: Confirm that the Browser Source is in the countdown scene and that you have switched to that scene in OBS.
- The timer is too small or hard to read: Adjust its layout in the source or page and preview it at the canvas size viewers will see.
- The timer starts at the wrong time or does not reset: Check the chosen timer’s behavior when its scene is shown. OBS’s Browser Source documentation does not establish a standard start-or-reset behavior for countdowns.
- Viewers hear the microphone or other audio during the break: Check the active audio sources in the countdown scene and mute the microphone if you are stepping away.
- The stream is not live after you start the encoder: Check that the encoder is connected using the correct YouTube stream details. For a scheduled stream, wait for the preview in Live Control Room, then use YouTube’s Go live control.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live with uploaded podcast recordings and intermissions in a playlist, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos on YouTube, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams your uploads as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than broadcasting from a camera.
