To reduce the data used by a 24/7 Indian music YouTube Live stream, lower the encoder’s video bitrate and use only the resolution and frame rate the visuals need. Test the setting with representative music and movement, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. A 3 Mbps video stream sends about 32.4 GB in 24 hours, before audio and network overhead; the actual total depends on the full stream and your provider’s usage accounting.
What data can you control?
This guide is for the person broadcasting, not a viewer watching on mobile data. The relevant figure is the encoder’s outgoing upload bitrate: the amount of data your streaming setup sends to YouTube while live. Lowering it reduces the encoded video data sent each second. Resolution and frame rate affect how much bitrate is needed to maintain acceptable picture quality, but there is no single setting that will look good for every visual, source file, or encoder.
YouTube Help says it “will automatically transcode your live stream to create many different output formats so that all of your viewers across many devices and networks can watch.” That helps YouTube serve viewers in different conditions; it does not reduce the data your encoder uploads.
How much data does a 24/7 live stream use?
The estimates below calculate video payload at a steady bitrate for 24 hours: bitrate in megabits per second Ă— 86,400 seconds Ă· 8 Ă· 1,000. They use decimal gigabytes and exclude audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions, reconnects, and provider-specific rounding or accounting.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Video bitrate | Estimated video data per 24 hours |
|---|---|
| 3 Mbps | About 32.4 GB |
| 8 Mbps | About 86.4 GB |
| 14 Mbps | About 151.2 GB |
YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. If transmitted continuously, that adds about 1.38 GB per day before overhead. Actual totals can be higher or lower depending on the stream and network. Check your encoder or router’s usage counters and your provider’s current plan and usage meter; do not assume a mobile plan and fixed broadband count data the same way.
Which bitrate and resolution should you try?
YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, YouTube lists 3 Mbps for 480p30, 8 Mbps for 720p30, and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. For AV1 and H.265, it lists 3 Mbps for both 480p30 and 720p30. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of equal visual quality across codecs or equipment. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For a mostly static image, a lower frame rate may be worth testing because there is little movement to encode. That is a practical inference, not a YouTube promise about music streams. Choose the lowest tested combination of resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that still looks acceptable for your artwork, lyrics, or other on-screen visuals. Avoid going below YouTube’s documented recommendations simply to chase a data target.
How to lower data use without making the stream unreliable
- Check the current encoder output. Find the streaming software or hardware encoder’s video bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and audio bitrate settings. Record your present values so you can restore them if needed.
- Pick a lower target to test. Use YouTube’s table as a reference. For example, if you currently send H.264 at 1080p30, testing 720p30 at the recommended 8 Mbps or 480p30 at 3 Mbps may lower video data substantially. The better choice depends on how the stream looks and what your connection can sustain.
- Test representative content before going continuous. Run a test with the same kind of music, artwork, transitions, and movement you expect during the 24/7 broadcast. Compare the low setting with a higher fallback. Check the picture and listen for audio problems rather than judging by bitrate alone.
- Check upload capacity and leave headroom. YouTube recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom and warns that other people using a shared connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the stream. Test outbound upload speed, not just download speed. Headroom helps reliability; it does not lower the selected bitrate. A 3 Mbps stream still sends roughly 3 Mbps while live.
- Monitor YouTube stream health. Watch for warnings or instability during the test and after changing settings. If the selected resolution cannot be sustained, YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance says to consider lowering resolution. Incorrect bitrate configuration can also impair transcoding and delivery; use the platform’s documented settings as a floor, not an invitation to undercut them.

What does not directly save encoder data?
- Extra upload headroom: it gives the stream more room to remain stable when bandwidth fluctuates, but the encoder still sends data at its configured rate.
- Lower latency: this is not a bitrate-reduction control. YouTube notes that lower latency may mean more playback buffering for viewers. For a music stream with little real-time interaction, weigh that trade-off without assuming it will reduce data use.
- DVR: the viewer option to pause, rewind, and resume is not an encoder bitrate setting.
Estimate your own monthly usage
Use the daily estimates as a starting point, then multiply by actual on-air hours. For example, a constant 3 Mbps video bitrate uses roughly 1.35 decimal TB over 30 days before audio and overhead (32.4 GB Ă— 30). This is arithmetic, not a provider bill estimate. For an India-specific cost or allowance, check the current terms and usage meter for your named broadband or mobile plan; no universal Indian data cap or billing rule applies.
