How to Use an iPhone or iPad as a Streaming Camera

Use an iPhone or iPad as a streaming camera with Mac Continuity Camera, an OBS USB or NDI workflow, or a mobile studio—and choose the route that fits your setup.

You can use an iPhone or iPad as a streaming camera in three main ways: connect an iPhone to a Mac with Apple Continuity Camera, send a mobile camera feed into OBS using a USB or NDI workflow, or host a stream directly from a supported mobile browser or app. Choose based on where you want to produce the show: on a Mac, in OBS on a computer, or entirely on the mobile device.

Apple’s Continuity Camera webcam instructions cover iPhone, not iPad. For an iPad, the options covered here are connecting it to OBS through a third-party workflow or hosting directly from the device.

Choose the right camera workflow

Route Where the stream is produced Connection Best fit Main constraint
Apple Continuity Camera Mac video app or browser studio Wireless or USB Using an iPhone as a camera input on a Mac Requires compatible Apple devices and account settings; this Mac webcam route is iPhone-specific.
Camera for OBS Studio over USB Mac or Windows computer running OBS USB A direct wired feed in an OBS scene Requires a third-party iOS app and OBS plugin; Windows also needs Apple device support.
NDI to OBS Computer running OBS Local network Placing the camera away from the production computer Network conditions affect the feed, and OBS needs a third-party NDI receiving source.
Mobile studio iPhone or iPad browser or app The device’s internet connection Hosting without a separate computer production system Mobile features differ by platform; check the service’s current live requirements.

This is a comparison of setup requirements, not measured image quality or latency. No performance figures are established by the setup sources.

Use an iPhone as a webcam on a Mac with Continuity Camera

Check compatibility first

Apple lists an iPhone XR or later running iOS 16 or later, and a Mac compatible with macOS Ventura 13 or later, for this webcam feature. Both devices must use the same Apple Account with two-factor authentication enabled, have Wi-Fi and Bluetooth turned on, and be near each other. A wireless setup will not work if the Mac is using AirPlay or Sidecar, or if the devices are sharing their internet connection. For USB, connect the iPhone and approve the trust prompt. See Apple’s Continuity Camera guide for current setup and requirements.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Set it up

  1. On the iPhone, open Settings → General → AirPlay & Continuity. On some software versions, this setting appears under AirPlay & Handoff. Make sure Continuity Camera is enabled.
  2. Place the iPhone on a stable, compatible mount or stand. Apple recommends landscape orientation for automatic selection. Aim the unobstructed rear camera at the scene.
  3. Open the streaming, meeting, or camera-enabled app on the Mac. In that app’s camera menu, select the iPhone. The menu location varies by app.
  4. For a wired setup, connect a compatible USB cable and approve any trust or accessory prompts. USB is also useful when you want to keep the phone charging during a long session.
  5. Check the framing, focus, and lighting in the actual streaming app before going live. These checks help catch problems in the complete setup; the cited setup guidance does not report controlled image-quality comparisons.

If the iPhone does not appear

  • Confirm the device, operating-system, Apple Account, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and proximity requirements above.
  • Check that Continuity Camera is enabled and that the Mac is not using AirPlay or Sidecar for a wireless setup.
  • Update both systems and the video app, then try connecting by USB and accepting the trust prompts.
  • If the iPhone has restarted, Apple advises unlocking it once before relocking it while troubleshooting.

Connect an iPhone or iPad to OBS

OBS does not turn an iPhone or iPad into a camera input by itself in the workflows described here. Camera for OBS Studio’s USB workflow uses an iOS app and an OBS plugin. Its NDI workflow sends the feed over a local network and needs an NDI receiving source in OBS, such as the DistroAV plugin. Follow the project’s current version requirements when installing; they may change.

USB: choose a direct wired feed

  1. Install the Camera for OBS Studio plugin for OBS before purchasing or installing the companion iOS app, as the project recommends.
  2. Install the iOS app and connect the iPhone or iPad to the computer with a compatible USB cable.
  3. On Windows, install Apple device support. Unlock the device, trust the computer if prompted, and confirm the computer recognizes it.
  4. Add the camera source in OBS using the plugin’s instructions, then check the shot in the OBS preview before streaming.

The project recommends USB when lower latency and reliability are priorities. This is a recommendation, not a published latency measurement or guarantee.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

NDI: choose a network camera position

  1. Install and configure the iOS NDI camera app and an NDI receiving source in OBS, such as DistroAV, following their current instructions.
  2. Connect the phone and OBS computer to the local network and add the received NDI feed as a source in OBS.
  3. Test the feed from the intended camera position. Network capacity and congestion affect results; the project recommends Ethernet for the receiving computer where possible, and Wi-Fi 6 or 7 for higher bitrates or resolutions.

Choose NDI when the camera needs to move around the local network and that network can handle the feed. It is a third-party integration, not a built-in OBS camera feature.

Host directly from an iPhone or iPad

A mobile studio uses the phone or tablet as the host, rather than treating it as a camera peripheral for a separate production computer. StreamYard’s support documentation says to use native Safari on an iPhone or iPad for its mobile workflow and notes that native screen sharing and green screen or virtual background are unavailable in that workflow. The operating-system support matrix on that help page is historical information, so check the platform’s current live requirements before relying on it: StreamYard’s iOS instructions.

  • Travel Must-Have for People On the Go: A must-have travel accessory for flights, flying, airports, air travel, airplanes, planes, international trips, cruises, and long travel days. Key gadget for your airport haul, travel accessories and must-haves.

That is different from using an iPhone as a camera in a computer-hosted studio. StreamYard’s iPhone webcam instructions describe an iPhone-to-Mac route and say iPad is not supported for that particular feature. Apple’s Continuity Camera webcam requirements also specify iPhone.

Mounting, cables, and capture hardware

  • Use a stable phone mount or stand. Apple recommends mounting the iPhone, and a steady position makes it easier to maintain consistent framing through a long stream.
  • Use a compatible USB cable when it helps. It can provide the wired Continuity Camera connection or a USB OBS workflow; connector compatibility depends on the device.
  • Do not buy an HDMI capture device by default. HDMI capture applies when the video source has HDMI output. It is not required for the ordinary iPhone Continuity Camera setup. StreamYard’s dedicated-camera guide gives an HDMI capture device as an example for HDMI sources.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want to use the iPhone or iPad as the live camera, the workflows above send that camera feed to a computer or mobile studio. StreamNeo is for a different job: keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded recordings or a playlist, not broadcasting a live camera feed. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so no computer or home internet connection has to stay on.
