Use Linode Object Storage for a library of video files held as S3-compatible objects; use Block Storage when the process that sends your stream to YouTube needs files on a mounted disk attached to a Linode. Neither storage choice, by itself, is a YouTube encoder or a confirmed way to make YouTube fetch and loop a video from a bucket URL.
Which storage should you choose?

These are storage roles, not interchangeable live-stream methods. Linode’s documentation describes Object Storage as S3-compatible cloud file storage and identifies video as a possible unstructured asset; Block Storage is attached storage for a Linode. Linode’s backup guide also shows an rclone route for uploading files to a private bucket, not a YouTube ingestion procedure.
Can YouTube loop a video directly from Linode Object Storage?
The available Linode material does not establish that YouTube can read or loop a video directly from an S3-compatible URL. A bucket stores and serves files; a separate encoder or streaming-server workflow must publish a live feed to YouTube. Do not treat a bucket URL as a YouTube live source unless the publishing software you choose explicitly supports that workflow and you have verified YouTube’s current live-stream requirements.
Linode’s reference to streaming and delivery with Akamai CDN concerns a delivery architecture. It is not proof of direct YouTube ingest. Linode’s media-server guide index lists RTMP and Block Storage/Plex topics, but does not provide a recipe for looping a prerecorded file to YouTube. See Linode’s media-server guide index.

Choose based on how your stream process reads the file
Choose Object Storage for a bucket-based library
Object Storage makes sense when your source videos belong in a bucket and your software can retrieve them using an S3-compatible interface. The bucket can be independent of a Linode VM, so it can serve as a canonical media library even if you later change the server that publishes the live stream.
Choose Block Storage when the process expects a mounted filesystem
If your encoder or stream server runs on a Linode and expects a file path on disk, an attached Block Storage volume fits that access pattern. The process reads the mounted file as local filesystem data; the storage does not publish the stream for you.

Use both if the workflow benefits from each
A practical architecture is to keep the canonical library in Object Storage, then copy or cache the currently active file to a mounted Block Storage volume when the streaming process needs filesystem access. This combines an object-based library with disk-like access for the active workload. It is an architectural option based on the documented storage roles, not a Linode-prescribed YouTube setup.
Estimate cost without relying on stale price examples
Compare the costs for your actual workflow rather than assuming one option is cheaper. Historical community answers contain dated Object Storage pricing and transfer figures, and the available figures are not consistent enough to treat as current. Historical Block Storage discussions likewise should not be used as current price or capacity limits. Check the live product pages and limits for the region and plan you intend to use.

- Measure the total size of the media library.
- Estimate how often you upload or replace files.
- Estimate how many bytes the stream server fetches from the bucket.
- Separate server-to-YouTube publishing from serving video directly to viewers. A file fetched by a stream server and a file delivered to viewers from a storage origin create different transfer patterns.
- Check current regional storage and outbound-transfer rates for each service before choosing.
Object Storage can involve both stored capacity and outbound transfer; repeatedly reading a file for a server workflow is not the same billing pattern as repeatedly delivering it to end viewers from the storage origin. Any conclusion about savings depends on actual transfer volumes and current rates.
