First decide whether the workflow needs a Linode at all. If your encoder can send directly to YouTube, you can avoid running an intermediate server. A Linode relay can make sense when you need a self-managed forwarding or recording setup, but it adds a public host, inbound services, and stream credentials to protect. The steps below focus on securing that optional relay without opening ports that your actual setup does not use.
Choose the right streaming architecture

For either path, use YouTube’s secure RTMPS ingestion when the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL; its documented ingestion connection uses port 443. RTMPS encrypts the encoder-to-YouTube leg, not the Linode’s administration, filesystem, or stored secrets. YouTube’s RTMPS guide and Live Control Room instructions explain the secure URL workflow.
Confirm the server and recovery assumptions
Before changing access or firewall rules, write down the distribution and version, whether the Linode receives inbound RTMP, which firewall layers are active (host firewall and any provider-level controls), and how you will regain access if SSH stops working. Keep access to the provider console or another documented recovery route. Exact commands and defaults vary by distribution and version, so follow that system’s documentation rather than applying a universal firewall recipe.
- Identify the services that must remain reachable and from which source addresses.
- Keep a second SSH session open while testing access changes.
- Back up the SSH configuration before editing it and know how to restore it from the console.
- Do not close the working session until a fresh login and the intended firewall behavior have both been verified.
Patch the operating system and use a restricted administrator
Install supported security updates using the package manager and maintenance process for the installed distribution. Linode’s SSH hardening guidance recommends keeping packages updated, using a standard account, limiting unnecessary services, and backing up SSH configuration before edits. Its page dates to April 7, 2017, so use those principles while checking current distribution defaults and documentation: Harden SSH Access with Advanced OpenSSH Features.

Create or verify a named, non-root account with only the sudo privileges required for administration. Confirm that the account can perform necessary tasks before restricting root access. Avoid routine administration as root, and remove or disable services the relay does not need.
Harden SSH without locking yourself out
- Back up the current configuration. Preserve the active SSH daemon configuration and note any distribution-specific include files or overrides.
- Verify key-based access. From a second terminal, log in as the restricted administrator using the intended SSH key. Do not disable a currently working login method until this test succeeds.
- Restrict who may log in. Configure SSH access controls to allow only the required users or groups, using the syntax supported by the installed OpenSSH version. Linode’s guidance documents allow/deny controls, but current distribution defaults can differ.
- Validate before applying. Use the installed SSH daemon’s configuration test procedure, then reload or restart it according to the distribution’s service manager.
- Test a new session. Open another fresh connection and confirm the allowed administrator can log in. Keep the original session open until that works and the recovery route remains available.
Do not copy a remembered configuration snippet blindly: a syntax error or an access rule that excludes your account can prevent remote login. Consult the current OpenSSH and distribution documentation for directive names and service commands.

Allow only the network flows the topology needs
Set both host and provider-level firewall rules to match the actual services. Keep administration access restricted to trusted source addresses where practical, and permit outbound connections needed for updates and streaming. Review rules after service changes rather than leaving temporary openings in place.
Direct encoder-to-YouTube
If the Linode is not receiving the source stream, do not open inbound TCP port 1935 merely because the workflow is a livestream. The encoder connects to YouTube; the Linode may not need any streaming listener at all.

Inbound RTMP to a relay
Linode’s NGINX RTMP example listens on TCP port 1935, but that is an example relay configuration, not a universal requirement. If your service accepts inbound publishing, expose only the necessary port and restrict source addresses when feasible. Add publishing authentication; a reachable RTMP listener without meaningful access control lets unauthorized clients attempt to publish. Linode’s example includes an on_publish authentication hook and optional recording or forwarding; review the current configuration before adapting it: Linode’s NGINX RTMP guide.
Protect stream keys and relay credentials
A relay may need YouTube’s destination stream key, and an inbound relay may also need a way to authenticate publishers. Treat each as a password: restrict access to configuration files and secret stores to the service account and administrators who need them; avoid placing credentials in world-readable files, public repositories, screenshots, shell history, or support posts. Keep secrets out of logs where possible.

If a key is exposed, replace it through the relevant service’s controls and update the authorized encoder or relay configuration. Do not assume that changing the server firewall invalidates an already disclosed stream key.

Obtain the current RTMPS URL from YouTube Live Control Room and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube notes that the displayed default can be ordinary RTMP, so select and verify the secure URL rather than assuming the default is encrypted. Use the URL and application name supplied for the current stream; do not hard-code a remembered endpoint into a general guide.

YouTube’s developer documentation specifies an rtmps URL and port 443 for RTMPS ingestion. For encoders that require a different protocol, check that encoder’s current documentation and YouTube’s current ingestion guidance. YouTube’s HLS guidance describes HTTPS-based segmented delivery and higher latency than continuous RTMP delivery: YouTube ingestion protocol guidance.
Add monitoring and a recovery plan
Monitor system updates, authentication logs, service health, disk use if recording, and firewall changes. Keep a backup of important configuration that does not expose stream keys, and document how to restore the service or revoke credentials. Verify that logs and recordings have appropriate access limits and retention; recording is optional, not a reason to retain copies indefinitely.
Fail2ban can add a layer by monitoring logs and responding to repeated failures, but it is not a substitute for access controls or firewall rules. Linode’s guide, updated June 27, 2023, explicitly says it should complement an already-hardened server rather than replace secure firewall rules: Linode Fail2ban guidance.
Troubleshoot common security and connection problems
