Start by identifying which connection failed: FFmpeg’s source input or its YouTube output. The familiar -reconnect options are documented for HTTP, not as recovery switches for an RTMP/RTMPS publishing connection. Confirm the output URL and protocol, inspect the complete error around the disconnect, and then separate encoder or source problems from outbound network problems.
What FFmpeg reconnect errors mean for a YouTube stream
A message such as Connection reset by peer, Broken pipe, or failed to connect to server — connection timed out indicates a connection or write failure, but does not by itself identify whether the cause is the source, encoder, destination URL, or network path.
YouTube live publishing commonly uses RTMP or RTMPS. FFmpeg documents options such as -reconnect, -reconnect_streamed, -reconnect_at_eof, and -reconnect_on_network_error under its HTTP protocol documentation. Those options can apply to an HTTP input that needs retry behavior; do not assume they will re-establish a failed RTMP/RTMPS output. RTMP is a protocol for streaming multimedia over TCP/IP, and RTMPS adds TLS encryption. FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
The available documentation does not establish a Linode-specific reconnect bug, blocked port, outage, or universal firewall setting. Investigate the actual instance and its outbound route rather than changing Linode firewall rules on assumption.

When using an adapter, if the device is recognized as USB 2.0, try using the other side with the USB-C port. Simply flip the capture card and reconnect it to be recognized as USB 3.0
Diagnose the failure in order
- Capture the failure. Save the full FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, FFmpeg version and build, and the complete log lines immediately before and after the disconnect. Note whether the error names an input or the output. Check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages. A stream key grants access to the ingest, so never share or publish it.
- Verify YouTube’s destination URL and protocol. Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. If the setup specifies RTMPS, use the provided RTMPS endpoint; do not guess a hostname or simply change
rtmptortmps. YouTube says both the protocol and server should bertmps. If logs show an SSL error, verify the scheme and server; YouTube suggests port 443 if an SSL error persists. See Encrypt your stream using RTMPS. - Check whether the installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen endpoint. RTMPS requires TLS support. Distinguish a TLS handshake or certificate error from a connection that succeeds and then drops while sending media. Use the endpoint and connection details YouTube supplies.
- Separate source and encoding from transport. Inspect the local input, FFmpeg logs, and CPU load; if possible, review a local recording. Check whether the encoder is producing video and audio correctly before focusing on the network. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance distinguishes unhealthy encoder output from a healthy encoder preview, which can point the investigation toward outbound connectivity. See Troubleshoot your live stream.
- Test outbound connectivity from the Linode VM. Check reachability to the actual YouTube ingest hostname and port specified for the stream, along with the VM’s configured firewall and network rules. The right check depends on the URL, port, region, and instance configuration; the available evidence does not prescribe a Linode-specific rule.
- Change one relevant variable, then retest. Keep the original logs. Test with representative audio and motion, and watch stream health and messages in Live Control Room. This makes it easier to tell whether a change fixed the failure or merely changed its symptoms.
Check YouTube’s ingest settings
For its current live encoder guidance, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Match bitrate to codec, resolution, and frame rate, and make sure the tested upload capacity can sustain the stream with room for network variation. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
| H.264 stream setting | YouTube recommended ingest bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommendations in its live encoder guidance, accessed in 2026—not guaranteed minimum bandwidth for a Linode VM or a diagnosis of a particular disconnect. Check the table for the codec and format you actually use rather than treating these selected H.264 values as universal targets.

Common symptoms and the next check
| Symptom | What to check next |
|---|---|
Broken pipe or Connection reset by peer while writing output |
Confirm the YouTube URL and protocol, then determine whether the output connection dropped after connecting. Inspect the surrounding log and YouTube’s stream-health status; HTTP reconnect flags alone do not establish recovery for RTMP/RTMPS output. |
failed to connect to server — connection timed out |
Check the exact ingest hostname and port in Live Control Room, then test outbound reachability from the VM and inspect its configured egress rules. |
| SSL or TLS handshake error | Verify that the URL scheme and server are the RTMPS values provided by YouTube and that the FFmpeg build supports TLS. If the SSL error persists, YouTube suggests port 443. |
| YouTube reports that it is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming | Compare the configured bitrate with the codec, resolution, and frame rate; check CBR, keyframe interval, upload capacity, CPU load, and source continuity. |
| Encoder preview looks healthy, but the stream still disconnects | Keep investigating the path from the VM to the actual ingest endpoint, including outbound connectivity and configured network rules. This symptom does not by itself prove Linode is responsible. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a YouTube channel that keeps prerecorded videos looping 24/7, StreamNeo avoids keeping FFmpeg, a Linode VM, or a computer at home running. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from its cloud service. It streams to YouTube, not from a camera.
