Start by locating where the audio and video first drift apart: check the encoder output or local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and viewer playback. A Linode server is only one possible link in the chain; without knowing whether it encodes, relays, or merely supports the workflow, it cannot be assumed to be the cause.
Find where the sync problem begins
Before changing settings, make a short test using a visible event paired with a sharp sound, such as a hand clap. Compare that moment in the encoder’s output or local recording, YouTube’s Live Control Room preview, and the stream as a viewer sees it. YouTube recommends checking encoder output, errors and CPU load, the local archive, and the outbound connection when troubleshooting a live stream (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).
- Already out of sync in the encoder or local recording: investigate capture devices, source timestamps and routing, audio processing, and encoder configuration first.
- Local output is clean, but YouTube’s preview is not: inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and the route between the encoder, any relay or transcode stage, and YouTube ingestion.
- Only some viewers report the issue: compare playback on different devices and networks before changing the encoder.
Establish your actual architecture before applying a Linode-specific fix. OBS might run on a local computer and send a feed through a Linode relay; encoding might happen on the Linode instance; or Linode might support another part of the workflow. The available information does not establish a particular Linode cause or server setting.
Check the encoder, sources, and recording
Inspect the encoder’s own preview or output and review its logs or status for errors and CPU load. Confirm that the intended audio and video sources are routed into the same stream, and compare the result with a local recording if one is available. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder software, output, sources, errors, CPU load, local archives, and connectivity; if the encoder output appears healthy, its flow proceeds to the outbound connection (YouTube live-stream troubleshooting).

If you use OBS Studio
For a consistent, fixed offset already present in the OBS output, select the affected audio source and inspect its sync-offset control. OBS documents an audio sync-offset setting for a source, but that documentation does not identify the correct value for your stream (OBS Studio source API reference, version 33.0.0).
First determine whether audio leads or lags video, and measure the difference in the recording or output. Adjust the affected source only by the measured amount, then make another test and verify the result locally and in YouTube’s preview. Do not use a guessed millisecond value: an adjustment in the wrong direction, or on the wrong source, can make the mismatch worse.

Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and check the health indicator and its timestamped messages. The official error guide covers ingestion problems involving stream format and audio configuration, including supported codec and configuration requirements for the cited setup (YouTube live-stream error messages).
Use the message and your encoder’s actual settings to decide what to correct. An audio-setting warning is a reason to verify the named setting; it does not establish that sample rate, or any other single setting, is the cause of every sync fault. Avoid changing bitrate, audio rate, or latency at random.

Check the connection and any relay between Linode and YouTube
Test the outbound upload path under conditions representative of the stream. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and warns that other network activity can reduce bandwidth available to the stream (YouTube streaming tips). Compare the stream’s total bitrate with the capacity actually available while it is running, not just the connection’s advertised maximum. Monitor the stream during the test.
If the encoder sends through a Linode-hosted relay or transcode service, compare the output before and after that stage where possible. That helps distinguish a clean encoder feed from a problem introduced later in the path. YouTube’s documented live-stream latency is the delay between capture at the camera or encoder and display to viewers; choosing a lower-latency mode may increase buffering and is not a guaranteed audio/video synchronization correction (YouTube live-stream settings).

Run a complete test before the event
Use representative motion and audio, and follow the stream through the same encoder, relay, and YouTube route you plan to use live. Check the encoder output and YouTube preview, confirm that upload capacity has headroom, and keep monitoring audio and video during transmission. YouTube recommends pre-event testing, sufficient bandwidth, and continuous monitoring (YouTube streaming tips; YouTube live-streaming tips).
