You can loop recorded worship on YouTube with OBS Studio by adding a video as a looping Media Source or building a playlist with OBS’s VLC Video source. But a looping file is not the same as a dependable, unattended 24/7 service: you still need to clear the music and recordings, test the stream, monitor it, and plan for internet or software interruptions.
Before you stream: clear the music and recordings
Rights are the first decision, not a final technical check. JLicense, a music-licensing agency serving the international Jewish community, says a religious-service exception does not extend to broadcasting, webcasting, transmitting, live-streaming, sharing, podcasting, or recording and archiving worship-service parts that contain copyrighted works. Those uses require a license or written permission from each rights holder. See JLicense’s FAQ and the Rabbinical Assembly’s streaming guide.
Check the actual songs, lyrics, arrangements, sound recordings, destinations, territories, archive duration, and license period against current license terms and permissions. A license for a live performance does not automatically authorize replaying a commercial recording. The United Methodist Church’s copyright and streaming guidance makes the same live-performance versus pre-recorded-track distinction; it is a useful cross-check, not Jewish-specific licensing advice.
YouTube separately requires broadcasters to have the necessary rights for live content on Google services, including music rights. It scans live streams for third-party content and may replace the stream with a placeholder image, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even if you believe you are licensed, enforcement may occur if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream terms and its copyright guidance for live streams. Ask rights holders about allowlisting where relevant, and keep written evidence of the permission’s scope. A platform action and your congregation’s view of its permission are separate matters.

Choose a single file or a playlist
For one continuous program, use a single video file and enable its loop setting. For a program assembled from several recordings, use a playlist and choose its order deliberately. OBS documents looping for both media sources and playlists, but the congregation is responsible for the content and how transitions sound and look.
| Approach | Works well when | Check before going live |
|---|---|---|
| One looping file | The program should repeat in the same order and has a clean beginning-to-end seam. | Watch the end-to-start transition for a gap, black frame, abrupt image, or audio discontinuity. |
| Playlist | The program contains multiple cleared recordings or needs a longer sequence. | Decide whether playback should be sequential or shuffled, then check each transition and the end-to-start behavior. |
OBS supports common local video formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, and WebM. See the OBS Media Sources documentation for the available source properties.

Set up the YouTube stream in OBS
- Prepare the program file or playlist. Keep the files accessible on the streaming computer, and confirm that every included work and recording is cleared for the intended live stream and any archive.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key from YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it. YouTube’s current setup details are in its live-streaming help.
- Add a single video. In the OBS scene, select Sources > + > Media Source, create or select a source, enable Local File, and browse to the recording. Enable Loop in the source properties. OBS describes this setting as replaying the file after playback completes.
- Or add a playlist. Select Sources > + > VLC Video Source, add the cleared files to its playlist, arrange the sequence, and enable Loop Playlist. If VLC Video Source is unavailable, install VLC and restart OBS; consult the OBS documentation for supported source options.
- Check picture and sound. Confirm the source fills the intended canvas, play it, and watch OBS’s audio meters to make sure the intended program audio is reaching the stream. Listen to the public YouTube player as well as checking the preview.
- Configure and test output. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard considers computer hardware and network conditions. Use it as a starting point, then verify settings and make a short test from the actual source and venue. The wizard is not a guarantee of uninterrupted service; see the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- Start streaming and verify the destination. Check the public player for the correct image and sound, and confirm that the intended stream is live. Run a supervised test before relying on a longer broadcast.
Choose a stable connection and realistic output
The Rabbinical Assembly’s 2020 guide gives 4–6 Mbps as a minimum upload-speed baseline to avoid overly pixelated video or choppy audio. It is not a guarantee: suitable bitrate depends on resolution, platform limits, competing network use, and connection stability. Measure upload performance at the venue and leave headroom rather than setting bitrate at the full measured speed.
OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming and recommends a wired connection where practical. Set bitrate within both the connection’s stable capacity and YouTube’s limits; if the stream stutters or drops frames, lower it and test again. A cable helps only if the venue’s internet service and other network equipment are working properly. Check the cable, router, network card, and other devices if a wired connection still fails. Read OBS’s stream connection troubleshooting guide.

Plan for the parts a loop cannot handle
OBS can repeat media, but its documentation does not promise that a computer, OBS session, internet connection, or YouTube will remain live unattended around the clock. A computer-based setup depends on power, the machine and application staying functional, and the connection remaining available. Assign someone to check the player and have a restart and recovery procedure for interruptions.
- Test a full file or playlist cycle, including its seam and audio transitions.
- Check the live player after starting and at intervals appropriate to the congregation’s service plan.
- Know who can restart OBS or the stream, and how that person will be alerted if the broadcast stops.
- Decide whether to retain a recording or archive, and ensure the permissions cover that use and duration.
- Do not assume a successful test prevents later Content ID action or network and power failures.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on YouTube loop without keeping a computer running at home, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. StreamNeo is YouTube-only, and it does not remove your responsibility to secure music and recording rights.

Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| The video stops at the end instead of repeating. | The source’s loop option is off, or a playlist’s loop option is not enabled. | Open the source properties and enable Loop for Media Source or Loop Playlist for VLC Video Source. |
| The stream is live, but the player is black or shows the wrong picture. | The wrong source or scene is active, the file cannot be read, or the source is not framed correctly. | Check the selected scene and source, confirm the file plays locally, and inspect the public player after correcting the preview. |
| Viewers hear silence or unexpected audio. | The source is muted, the wrong audio is routed, or the program file has no usable audio. | Watch OBS’s audio meters during playback, check source and mixer levels, and listen to the public player. |
| The stream is choppy, pixelated, or disconnects. | Bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity, Wi-Fi is unstable, or a network device is failing. | Use Ethernet if available, lower bitrate to fit stable upload speed and platform limits, and inspect the cable, router, network card, and other devices. |
| YouTube replaces or interrupts the stream. | Its live scan detected third-party content, or rights and Content ID handling need attention. | Review permissions for the exact material and destination; contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting where relevant and retain written confirmation. |
Costs and practical choices
For OBS, the main practical costs are the computer, power, connectivity, and the time needed to monitor and recover the stream; no generic streaming hardware is required by default. A suitable Ethernet cable is worth considering only if the venue lacks one. For a cloud-managed option, StreamNeo lists these durations on its pricing page; the displayed currency varies by visitor location:
- Daily: $0.99 per day
- Weekly: $2.99 per week
- Monthly: $9.99 per month
- 6 months: $49.99 for 6 months
- Yearly: $89.99 a year
Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is on every plan; only the billing duration changes. Daily, weekly, monthly, six-month, and yearly billing are available, with cancellation any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. See StreamNeo pricing.
